Coming from someone with the name NDmick, is a huge compliment. He IS a winner too. I watched Ryan alot this year (and not alot else) and he wins games with hardly any running game and very mediocre WRs/TEs......HE wins games. His understanding of the game is way above his years and he fully deserves to go in the top 10. There are a number of other players that I would like to take first, Ryan is one of them. I don't see how picking Ryan is worse than picking McFadden, neither are a pressing need, but needed. It would really take a halfwit to screw this draft up for us this year.
From watching highlights of Ryan on youtube (his supposed best of the best highlights) he looks like Pennington to me. I think if the Jets are looking to get away from that style of QB play, then Ryan would be an awful pick. IF the Jets are lookig to go QB, I really hope they go with Flacco in the late first (via trade up or trade down).
Thank you, that is the most hilarious compliment i've received on this board. I have this small but convincing gut feeling he's going to be like Aikman or Simms in his career. Both won SBs with the team that drafted them, and then went on to color commentary in the booth. He has that persona about him.
He has a better arm than Pennington in 2002, which is a normal QB arm. Flacco is a 3 year project of holding the clipboard, Ryan can start after one year.
I have to admit that this is the first draft in a very long time that I didn't have a clue who anyone is taking. Not just the Jets, but anyone. If the Jets go with Ryan, I'll have to think they know more then I do. If they go with Gholston, same thing. If they go with Harvey, great, because that means that I am smarter then I thought I was.
I keep reading more and more about Ryan and not understanding why the Jets among others would consider him a top flight QB Prospect? -He lacks arm strength After dealing with Penny's lack of arm strength despire his other intangibles, why go there again? -He throws too many interceptions Who needs that from a guy who's not a long range bomber? -His mobility is limited In this age of football if you can't fire it - then you'd better be able to buy time, and he can't do either Look, he's a good smart kid whose won games - but he doesn't have the arm to be a Pro Bowler - so why draft him with #6 when there are plenty of prospects who can be had later or MUCH later with better upside?
my thought process, is the other way around.... big IF--- Clemens is a Derek Anderson, Ryan our Brady Quinn- now we have 2 QBs who can lead a team, and if Clemens falters/injured, Ryan can pick it back up. Ask Phil Savage, he loves the situation the Browns have right now. BUT- its contingent on Clemens being capable of leading a team, or hell, even being a solid backup.
Why? He has no UPSIDE! He's maxed out size, strength, arm strength - is already smart and gutsy - so what will he add - how will he improve/grow as a professional? After the experiences with Pennington and DBrick I don't want to draft guys who are maxed out unless they are all ready to be star players from day one. Otherwise you have to pick the guy(s) who have headroom - can become better, bigger, stronger, smarter with coaching and maturity.
So you want Matt Ryan to grow physically? That makes no sense to me. If that was the case he wouldn't be mentioned as a top 5 pick. Who is to say he is not going to get better? Our coaches don't have the ability to make him a better QB, and that he will begin the downslide of his abilities at the beginning of his career? He has plenty of upside, he is notorious for having icewater in his veins and leading his team to a 4th qtr comeback. Thats a huge upside. Name the last QB the Jets had who did that? Exclude the Clemens attempts at BAL and WASH this year.
...for throwing interceptions and flopping balls / ducks - he's not a strong body guy - he can get more fit...but he hasn't. They can't give him a better arm, period...
INTs are more of his embarrassing receivers not getting separation. Strength is a concern, he is more of a system QB type, not a guy who can do it by himself, but- he seems turn that ability on when the pressure rises. That odd intangible makes him an attractive prospect.
I get the whole "if they think he's the BPA at 6" point; but what i don't get is why they think he'll be the best player. this is from NFLdraftcountdown.com. does anyone know how credible they are as scouts? because he doesn't look that good. Height: 6-43/4 | Weight: 228 | 40-Time: 4.92 Official Bio Strengths: Good size and a big frame...Smart and understands how to read a defense...Is a natural born leader...Solid technique and mechanics...Displays great poise...Good touch and timing...Able to buy time in the pocket...Throws well on the run...A hard worker...Has experience running a pro style offense...Top-notch competitor and a winner...Is tough, strong and fearless...Productive and had an outstanding senior campaign...Very dedicated and extremely passionate about the game of football. Weaknesses: Arm strength is only average...Still throws too many interceptions...Accuracy can be streaky...Struggles with the deep ball...A bit of a gunslinger who will play too recklessly at times...Not very mobile and won't beat you with his feet...May have some minor durability issues...Isn't a great athlete...May not have a huge upside. Notes: Nickname is "Matty Ice"...Overthrew Quinton Porter to take over the starting job in 2005...Was plagued by a broken foot as a junior...Really emerged as a top pro prospect as a senior, propelling his team to a great season even though he was surrounded by ordinary talent...Physical tools aren't special but they're adequate across the board and his intangibles are second to none...A safe pick who should become a solid starter at the next level but probably isn't a franchise signal caller. http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingreports/qb/mattryan.html
I Would love a guy like McFadden or Gholston but you cant complain with Matt Ryan , He's a good QB and we dont have a set QB as of now so why not draft the top qb in the nfl draft , Dont love it but it aint horrible either.
I don't want any part of drafting a QB. We reached on Clemens a few years ago, let's at least see him for a full year behind a legit NFL line. That being said, it would not shock me in the least if Pennington beats him out in camp this year and gets the nod.
The Strengths are what I look for in a team-leading QB. Natural Born leader alone makes me smile... the gunslinger yet average arm thing is confusing- i thought you needed a big arm to be a gunslinger? Someone help me out... Buys time even with limited mobility, winner, fearless, dedicated-loves football.... that makes any FO study him further. I think he's just one of those guys who won't wow you week in and week out, but somehow- on monday or tuesday- your work week is a little better because he won the game and got it done. Struggles with the deep ball... ok thats 70% of QBs in the NFL, but i don't need the 75 yard cannon, i need the 35 yrd laser or the 20 yrd out route with the receivers we have. I need to be able to turn the TV off at the two minute drill in the 4th qtr when the Jets are down by 4, and when i see the highlights on Sportcenter, we won the game due to his comeback abilities. I respect Scott Wrights opinion, but i rely on my own scouting abilities... i've called a few pre draft. Rothlisberger, Eli, Revis, Harris, Landry, Demarcus Ware (didn't know anything about him, heard his name alone and said "he'll go to a pro bowl or two"). I'm not trying to say i'm a draft genius. But I like my gut feelings more than anybody else. Call it arrogance. I have been wrong though-- I didn't think Adrian Peterson was going to be this good, Bobby Carpenter, Michael Clayton.... Ahmad Carroll- ugh I like his measurables though, almost 6-5, 228-- thats a big dude.
Mick, I'll agree that some of his Positives are exactly what you need in an NFL QB. but i think that, in this draft, he is the de facto top QB only because there isn't that sureshot Franchise QB that there usually is (at least 1). And so, if there's any doubt whatsoever about Ryan, then i think you steer clear of taking him at #6. besides, we don't know yet what we have in Clemens with a better OL and an overall better team. i guess i'm just very leery of drafting a QB early this year due to the the weak QB crop of this draft. edit: oh yeah, i wanted to mention this... if you have a pretty good track record with your player analysis and projection, then by all means you should trust yourself. i know most of the so-called experts are routinely wrong, but i have to say - as lame as he is - i trust Jaws because he's a film geek. and he really saw Clemens as a starter material in the NFL. so i'm willing to wait to see what Clemens can do with an improved team.
