    GHOLSTON THIS YEAR’S MAMULA?
Posted by Mike Florio on April 11, 2008, 3:09 p.m.
There’s no denying the impressive physique and workout numbers that have been posted by Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston. But some league insiders are concerned that Gholston might be this year’s Mike Mamula.

Mamula, you might remember, was a defensive end who rocketed up the draft board based on incredible pre-draft numbers. The Boston College product made it all the way to No. 7 in 1995, jumping past guys like Joey Galloway and Warren Sapp and Hugh Douglas and Ty Law. But Mamula was a bust as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, and he has long since been out of the league.

As to Gholston, a league source tells us Gholston simply isn’t memorable when watching game film. As the thinking goes, if he were a dominant player at the college level, he would be showing up in the thick of things on a continuous basis. Per the source, he simply doesn’t.

We’ve recently heard that the Raiders could be targeting Gholston with the No. 4 overall selection. But plenty of league insiders don’t see him being a top-five selection

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically, how I've felt about Gholston and his entire career. A very hot and cold player at OSU, who has disappeared for long periods of time. Living in Columbus, I've seen every game Vernon has played and his inconsistency would be magnified in the NFL. Many, many OSU fans will testify to my opinion and agree James L & Malcom J were much better defensive players than Gholston.

Geez, after reading that it kind of makes me worry myself. I hope we get McFadden or trade down. Of course I'm assuming the Longs are gone by six.

He won't be that bad but most people think he won't be anywhere near as good as his combine numbers would make you believe. They also say he takes plays and complete games off. So buyer beware. Sounds like the perfect Al Davis pick. He must be senile by now anyway.

It?s not like this guy is only #s, when you watch him play, you see, that he has a lot of talent, not only speed and power. And he was ranked a top 15 player before his workouts.

You mean he had as many sacks as Chris Long last year against better competition without trying his hardest?

    Hell, I'll still take him

Parcells is also negotiating with Gholston as the #1 overall. Does Parcells pick Mamula-like busts that high? He's not known for that.

I found an interesting article about Mamula, because i know most of us may not be well informed about him. I learned alot reading this.

    http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/99-04252007-1336116.html

Its a bit biased since its from philly, but the fact that Mamula was 240 pounds and not 260, he couldn't handle the tackles. Imagine putting Vilma in Gholston's spot- same thing. So Comparing Mamula to Gholston is not fair. He may be a workout warrior like Mamula, but he has the size and speed to be the OLB. Mamula should have been a linebacker, not a 4-3 DE. If Mamula did play OLB in a 4-3, he may have played for 11 years with less injuries. Mamula had decent numbers, not top 10 numbers, but a solid player. Gholston is far better than Mamula. There shouldn't be any worries about the two.

You can tell mangini to stop trying to make Gholston drop in the draft, with these lame Mike Mamula comparisons. Its not going to work. If you didn't win that meaniless game against the chiefs , you probably would have got him. Too Bad. Now you can watch him when you visit the Raiders in oakland.

Yea but you really think C long falls to 6. I don't even expect him falling to four. Thats why were settling for Gholston.

its up to the Rams, they go with Dorsey, he's at 4 or 6. They go with Long, then the Raiders become the next click in the top 10 tumbler.

    It'll be fun to watch.

I'm scared to death of Gholston, I'm scared to take him and scared to pass on him. I really think he is going to either be really good or really bad, I'm not sure which though.

My ideal first round has the Raiders taking Gholston at 4 and McFadden makes it to 6.

Jenkins you might have a point but Laruantitis had a dissapointing year last season. Gholston was much, much more productive than James who many thought would be the top LB when James looked so raw and lost at some points. Gholston did indeed shoot up at the combine BUT that was expected heading in. It wasnt like this guy came out of nowhere and did this, many felt because of his body size and intensity that he would kill the combine which he rightfully did. But you need to watch some games like Michigan and Michigan St where he was creating so many problems for O-Lines to handle.

As a matter of fact, the only man who can say that they got passed the potential 1st overall pick Jake Long last season was in fact.......Vernon Gholston. Gholston will be a monster in the league, hes too committed to the game to just give up if something doesnt work out for him. Hes a gamer.

Vernon Mamula...... what a waste. probably the only good thing I've seen from Florio.

you know it's never a good thing if Raiderjoe supports the player :breakdance:

I just wish they took the cap hit this year with the uncapped season :shit:

WW had Gholston pegged to a T for months before we even drafted him. I disagreed at the time, but he was 100% correct. He probably knows the potential of OSU draftees as well as anyone.

Unfortunately, I looked at these articles around draft time and scoffed at them - I actually agreed with DWare and was amazed that he was the only guy to get by Jake Long all year.
