I can see us doing it too. Can't believe nobody else can. Hell, we tried to move up to take Bush 2 years ago and he was not the prospect Long or McFadden is. At least I didn't think so and as it turned out I was right..hehe.
You're talking about offering up an awful lot to make a jump of just a few spots. What would it take for us to go from 6 to 3 or 4? Certainly a second rounder. Anything else on top of that?
on the "rome wasn't built in a day" theory, we will need NEXT year's draft to 'complete' the team: 1- where does our FO reasonably think we will be picking in next year's draft? i'm guessing 15th through 20th. 2- picking 15th-20th, what players of need might be availalbe with our next year's pick? next year's draft will play a roll in this year's pick. for example, if the FO feels we need a top DB to complete the team but next year's draft looks to be void of top DB's, then perhaps we take a DB this year even if mcfadden is still on the board. on the other hand, if the FO knows that next year's draft is rich in top DBs but void of quality receivers, then we may trade down this year in favor of a top 'over the middle' receiver and wait until next year to grab a top DB. of our top needs (qb, db, olb, receiver, o/d line depth) which position could be address next year picking in the 15-20?
Not really. To jump from 6 to 4 would cost a third which I realize we don't have right now. There are only 200 points separating those two picks. I'm not talking moving any higher than that.
Huge amount of perceived value? We only got a 3rd (and 5th?) to drop from #1 to #6, waaay less than the draft chart indicates. I'm still pissed at Peyton Manning for not coming out that year. Seeing as how Pace and Walter Jones both excelled as LT's (#1 and #6 respectively), I think Parcells sees the value of a franchise LT now. For those who say C. Long won't go past OAK, I think there's a good chance of that (forgot in my original analysis). But somehow, I think Gholston is higher on Al Davis's board. Remember that Al Davis LOVES speed, which Gholston has in spades. If he has Long higher, I would guess it's not by much and we could probably move up for next year's 3rd or something like it. For me, going up to #4 to take Long for next year's 3rd (or even 2nd) is a no-brainer. He's a perfect fit for the 3-4 OLB and a pass-rushing threat at that. Basically, if we don't have to give up this year's 2nd or next year's 1st, a trade with OAK makes sense if C. Long is there.
I think Gholston is higher on his board too. Insane as it may be. I also agree that if Chris Long, McFadden and Gholston are there when Oakland picks the Jets will do everything in their power to move up. I really think Gholston is their 3rd choice in that group but maybe not Oakland's. The move could probably be done pretty easily and the Jets would get one of the two players I think they covet. Long or McFadden.
The best thing that could happen for us is that Ryan goes in the top 5. I do not think it will happen. Miami - Jake Long looks to be the pick here St Louis - Chris Long should be the pick, they need defense and he is BPA Atlanta - Dorsey over McFadden Oakland - McFadden KC - Ellis Jets - Tossup between Gholsten and DRC, trading down wouldn't be a bad idea with Gholsten, DRC, and Ryan to use as bait
Okay, Jake Long is NOT a lock to be the Dolphins #1 pick. Parcells is bringing everyone in to discuss and draw out contracts. Jake Long just happened to be the 1st called. This isn't a scenario with the likes of Mario Williams a few years back. Jake Long went, Chris Long will be brought in, Gholston, and Dorsey. You can pretty much take Ryan out of the equation. I don't believe they specifically targeted him, but Condon is also Ryan's agent, so who knows. It's all smoke screens people.
I have heard lots and lots of stories about parcells pulling shit shit and confusing people of what he wants to do. I wouldn't look into it at all. Either way we should get a pretty dope player.
Parcells looked foolish for passing up Orlando Pace. I doubt he makes the same mistake with Jake Long this year.
Hold your horses on Jake Long everyone. On espn.com, they have an article on the Jake Long talks with Miami and there's a link to a video piece with Chris Mortensen. Mortensen confirms that the agent for Long (Condon) is talking to Miami, but that the reason is that Parcells whose now in charge doesn't like overpaying for the top pick and that he "doesn't want to pay Jake Long quarterback money" (probably a leading reason why he traded down when we had it, picking up Farrior instead of Pace at 1). He said the Dolphins are also talking to the agents for Gholston, Chris Long, and a suprise one, Derrick Harvey of FL. All that is confirmed is that Matt Ryan is not on their radar, but Mortensen gives the impression that the Dolphins are starting their due dilligence on what's the best deal they can get at #1 knowing that they likely can't trade out of the pick because there are no takers. I'd hold the boat on assuming Jake Long is the pick...
Seriously. I wouldn't be surprised if is trying to negotiate Joe Thomas-money for Jake Long at #1. No more, no less. A RT can def be found in the 2nd round of this Draft. That's why I wasn't COMPLETELY sold on the idea that the Dolphins would take a RT with their overall 1st pick. If anybody is going to get that deserved money, it would be Chris Long in this Draft in my opinion.
Parcells having the first pick is going to save every other team in the league a couple million in this draft.
