I was checking out a few draft forums and found the results on their workout earlier today. 40-yard-dash: Malcolm Kelly: 4.77 ; 4.75 Reggie Smith: 4.67 ; 4.65 This pretty much destroys any hope of either of these guys going in round 1. Kelly's situation reminds me a lot of what Dwayne Jerrett went through last year. 4.7 for a receiver is horrible. I've also go a feeling that this didn't have to do with injuries... On the positive side for Smith he had good number on other drills. 39 1/2 vertical, and a 10 ft. 9 inch broad jump. Kelly had a 32 in vertical and a 9 foot 11 inch broad. Smith's stock drops as a corner but I can still see teams taking him in round 2 as a safety.
Hubbard from Wisconsin ( I think ) Is getting a lot of "under the radar" talk I'd love to see the jets pick him up....he could be a total package Paul Hubbard, Wisconsin: Hubbard is regarded as a project with raw skills, but on film he was fluid athlete who caught the ball in traffic, adjusted well to throws and snatched the football, and could run through hits for extra yardage. Running a 4.46 at the combine was impressive to me because it confirmed how good of an athlete he appeared to be on film for a 6-3, 224-lb receiver. Remember Larry Fitzgerald is about this size and he?s closer to a 4.6-40 guy. If you?re looking for player with potential to be what people expect from Limas Sweed and Malcolm Kelly but at a bargain rate, Paul Hubbard could be that guy.
Id take Kelly with our second rounder no question on tape he is a top 3 reciever in this draft, if we take Hardy over him id be pissed.
If nothing's wrong with Kelly physically, I still like him with our 2nd, as Mangini will no doubt whip him into shape if that's what's in question. He's too much of a talent on the field to pass up as long as he's not damaged goods. Those are poor workout numbers, however.
Kelly just became a 50-70 range pick, maybe lower. The 40 -time is a guideline, not gospel. Revis ran a 4.5 before he ran a sub4.4 They can be engineered with training. What annoys me is that Kelly obviously didn't train for a good 40 time, which speaks volumes about his ethic.... or he just a slow ass WR.
Just for comparison purposes (I AM NOT COMPARING THEIR TALENT): Jerry Rice, highly regarded as the best wide receiver in professional football, ran a 4.7 and was taken with the 16th pick in the first round. Malcolm Kelly ran - what?- a 4.7 as well??? Being on the slow side doesn't stop you from being a great WR, and besides, Coles is the speedster on our team...
I still really like Kelly, but I'll just leave it to our FO as to whether they think he's worth #36 or not.
QFT. Kelly, like almost all of these guys, is a name, good size, and a few highlights/lowlights to most/many of us.
