If Ian Kennedy is as good a pitcher as Mike Mussina, the baseball Gods handed the Yankees a gift.

    Eh. That's subject to interpretation.

I didn't mean it as a compliment.

Traber in two games has looked better than Myers/Henn looked in two years.

Unless you actually expect Kennedy to be a borderline #1/great #2 for the majority of his career, it would be a monumental shock for Kennedy to be as good as Mussina. Let's remember, if Mussina didn't become so fragile by the age of 35, he'd be getting serious HOF consideration right now. Even so, he's near the top of the list in the Hall of Very Good. Whether you like Mussina or not, if Kennedy can ever approach that, it would be huge.

Quite frankly, with our tendency to overrate young players, if Hughes had Mussina's career it would be pretty satisfactory.

    Scary isn't it?

Actually, all along I was looking at Kennedy as being a great #3 starter, so I guess if he mimics Moose at the height of his career, he should be able to do that much.

I do like Kennedy's fastball better than I ever liked Moose's.

I'd be pretty upset if Hughes was only as good as Moose though. For that much, we'd have been much better off trading him for Santana. I'm not worried about Hughes though.

Jeez, talk about sloppy. I'd hate to be a player in the locker room when Girardi feels better.

The only two guys in our pen who have sucked are Hawkins and Farnsworth.

    Shocking.

Atleast the rest of the crew has looked great. Hawkins and Farnsworth can be buried for the rest of the year and then off the books after the season.

If Kennedy mimics Moose at the height of his career, he'll be more than a great #3 starter. He'll be in the top 10 in ERA+ for 10 seasons, and be one of the 100 best pitchers in the history of the game (nearly top 10 in K/BB; top 25 in K; top 50 in W and W%; top 100 in ERA+, K/9, and BB/9). All of that has come despite Mussina being worse than average 3 out of the last 4 years. Even Hughes might not match that.

If Kennedy can be in the 3.8-4.0 ERA range with 13-15 W consistently over 8-10 years, the Yankees would be satisfied. In today's game, that's a solid #3. And with the Yankees money and system, he'll never have to be more than a #4 starter. They need Hughes to be what Mussina was, a borderline #1/great #2.

They would put Hawkins on waivers. But it's April 4, and they're not going to do that.

Ha! Thanks for showing up bro. Whenever you do, it makes me look better.

Anyway, yeah, we didn't have high expectations of Hawkins. Matsui is atrocious in left, but there was nothing we could do about that. As for Kennedy, I was hoping for better than what he showed tonight. As has been said, his control is his main weapon, and it was lacking tonight.

It's a bit upsetting to lose 13-4 to the Rays. Shit happens, but it shouldn't happen in a situation where we're clearly a superior team. We've been shut down offensively, and couldn't get outs from the mound, against a team whose goal this year is to win 80 games.

Fair enough, except I think Hughes has to be a legit top-10 #1 guy. Otherwise, we made one of the biggest mistakes in the history of the sport by not trading him for Santana.

He doesn't have any options? (I don't really understand the option system, so bear with me here.) Obviously you don't just release him, but if we could send him down, in order to keep someone else who can pitch better, why not do it?

Did you not see the movement on his fastball?

And doesn't he have a fastball, curve, and change? I think I also saw him throw a slider too.

Kay just said Joe Torre is out sick tonight.

How the hell do I get a job like that? I may spend most of my day posting on TGG, but at least I do my job competently.
