It's like me with Chad as a Qb. I want to like him but at the end of the day he ultimately is not the answer.
Well thats how we all feel about Chad, but to think he can't be a productive QB shows a lack of understanding of the game. Focusing on the talent level of the QB is just as dumb as focusing solely on the talent level of any other position. It's a football TEAM and an offense should be looked at as a unit, not as individuals who happen to be playing together.
It is hard for the team to Gel as a unit if the main cog can't function. If there is no threat of passes over 15 yard that takes away half of the field the defense has to cover. It makes it harder to run, pass block etc, etc! I have a thorough understanding of the game and realize that our Qb's shortcomings are holding this team back. I don't live in fantasy land and think that we have or will have anytime soon a defense as dominating as the 00 Ravens that we need to compete with Chad. A thorough understanding would tell you that we play in an Afc with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Lt etc, etc and Mediocre play not to lose will not get it done. If we were in the Nfc maybe but getting through any Combination of Ne, Sd, Jac, Cle, Pitt, Indy etc with mediocre play from the Qb is not realistic. A total understanding of the game would tell you that in the playoffs all the lines are good on all of the teams and a good team can stop your strength if it is the run and make you throw. Reference Sd the last two years. The better teams will make Chad throw and we will lose. We have been thinking otherwise for six years and where has it gotten us. We have the same discussion year in and out about our Qb. How many more playoff games do you want to watch that end with a Chad Pick SIx?
I love Chad but there simply is no future in him. We are talking about building a team for the future and Chad isn't bringing us anywhere. I love him to death but we need to have Clemens play the whole year and draft someone in case he doesn't pan out. Done. Most football analyst know this and I don't know why we would think Chad is leading us to a super bowl which is really what we are talking about.
It was not a competition. They had Chad throw 0 balls in the first game. You can probably go to a lot of teams and their 2nd guy had better stats then the 1st. Why, because the first is just getting the rust off and preparing for the season, the 2nd guy is trying to win a job and impress the coaches. Also, the coaches put the backup in a lot of different situations to evaluate them. I am not saying Chad had a good preseason, but who cares.
And if Chad had the type of game that Kellen had, you would be calling for his head. Kellen did not win that KC game, they won in spite of him. The only thing that saved his ass that game is that the Chiefs were absolutely HORRID.
Chad will start...get ready for all your nightmares to come true when he stands behind Mangold calling the signal. I dont care what others have to say but Chad will start...get over it you frustrated fans trying to take their anger off at CP....
I might have missed the posts but I don't think anyone every disputed that Pennington can be productive with a supporting cast. "Productive" is a matter of opinion though, and good vs. average production is where the issue lies I think.
How many of these games did we lose in the fourth quarter when the other team came back from behind? Every one of those. Also, when you can't run, then you can't pass. Those low scoring games where we lost just mean that the defense played well but not well enough to overcome the LACK of offense. The lack of an effective OL takes away the offense. You can't put up 20 points when you are flat of your back, or running for your life. You can't put up 20 points when your running game is stufffed for no game, down after down. You can't put up 20 points when you've got 1.8 seconds per down to do it. Those are salient factors that the NYJ dealt with game after game after game in 07. I think there is more to this than the quarterback... I don't think it matters who the quarterback is in this situation.
That's the first stage of a team that is prepared to win. If you require a savior to win a game, then your team will be an inveterate loser, year in and year out. The NYJ have not had a tradition of an excellent fear-of-god OL in a very long time. When they have had one, they have not had a defense that was worthy of the name. Otherwise why did we lose all the time? Not because of a lack of a savior.
Why care about the noodle, as you call him? Why not care about the OL and the snot-knocking blocking they better be doing for the RBs? Who not scream and holler for another stoning of those LBs so we can get another 18 yards on first down? Where is the bloodlust of real football fans? Do we have to suffer through another Madden year when the saviour hasn't shown. What's with this Messiah Madness? Let's encourage the NYJ FO and CS to get a TEAM together that loves to bust people up and run over them and stop theiir run and rush their passer to death -- just like other people have been doing to the NYJ for far too long.
If this is true, then the WRs are to blame...? I don't know, Man, you sure have a problem with the skill players on this team. All the more reason to have some really serious Bad Boys take over the game at the line of scrimmage and rough up and otherwise discourage the other team so that they cry and cringe when the ball is snapped next time. When are the NYJ going to strike some fear in the other team? It will not happen because of the skill players, they are the icing on the cake, or the salt and pepper on the meat and potatoes. The "Real Stuff" is up there in that nasty anti-glamourous line of scrimmage where there is a lot of grunting and moaning and biting and scratching. You guys seem to like those clean-shirted players that trip the light fantastic. But they get murderized without the winners on that line of scrimmage. If the NYJ are ever going to act like they own the place, the start and finish of that process is up on that line of scrimmage. Dance all you want, but keep it in the closet until the line of scrimmage belongs to US.
But you know, if we own the line of scrimmage, then the QB doesn't have to throw the ball because he HAS to. He can do it when it suits him. Otherwise, he just hands off to TJ and Leon and let them run over the hapless critters that have been made mincemeat by our scary monster OL. I know it's hard to drop that loser's mentality, since you have been praying for the Messiah to come all this time. But the way out of this morass is not the "playmaker" at the end of another $40 million guaranteed. The way out of this little problem that the NYJ are emersed in low these many years is up there in the darkness of that line of scrimmage. Sorry about that. But hey, I want to get out of this mess as much as the rest of you. But until we are ready willing and able to conquer and own that line of scrimmage, we won't be going anywhere but right back to that four-and-twelve pine seat we know too damned well.
I hope i can shed some light on this 6-way debate. The fact is this- forget Chad, forget Clemens-- we as Jets fans must collectively agree that we want a QB that can stand on his own and be effective without a All-Pro supporting cast. There are QBs in this league who make the players around him better, not the other way around. Lets find that guy, the QB who can make his team better rather than relying on 10 other guys to make the QB better. Those guys win championships.
It doesn't matter which way you say it, it still won't get through. The arguments for Pennington aren't even arguments for Pennington anymore, they're arguments against everything else.
Guess what! The linemen were replaced! The defense has been improved! Teams move forward by recognizing weaknesses and improving them..... Keeping an ineffective player in the lineup because of past success, good showings in practice, or other factors aside from his play on game day is a sure fire way to achieve mediocrity! As you complain and complain that people put too much of the blame on the shoulders of the QB, you exempt him from any of it! Hypocrisy, anyone? Chad has been an average, more realistically below average, QB for the last two seasons. That's not the kind of guy you keep in the lineup.... Just to further the OL/QB comparison, since you tend to insist that QB shouldn't be subjected to rules or standards any different than any other position.... One can equate Chad to Anthony Clement over the last two seasons. Here and there, he looks like a really solid starter. Usually he is unspectacular. Well too often, in key situations, his flaws are exploited and he comes up short.... If you want to subject the QB to the same treatment as everyone else, should Chad not be replaced?
