This is my opinion: I think the Jets are willing to, even want to trade Chad before the draft and will do so for the value they have internally determined he is worth. All these statements about competitions and not trading Chad are just intended to keep Chad's value as high as possible. And the statements seem to be working. Admittedly, the Chad fans here want to believe they are true, but it would be an idiotic move for the Jets. Amazingly the local and national media seem to be buying it. Kudos for the Jets FO. The only way Chad would start again is through injury. Period. Seriously, think about it. Chad is named starter for the 2007 season. He procedes to then play so horribly that there is no other decision but to bench him. That is not a decision that you go back on. It is a final decision. You just do not go back to a veteran QB who he has proven on the field that he is incapable of doing it anymore. That is the type of move guaranteed to set the organization back. If Kellen is not the answer, then the move is someone else either in FA or the draft. You DO NOT go back to the QB who was unable to hold on to the starting position he was handed. You have already moved away from Chad and there is no turning back, and no reason to. But the Jets FO is in a tough spot. The harsh reality is that Chad is a prime candidate for being cut. He has no role on the team and he is a huge financial drain. Like D-Rob if the rest of the league knows he may be cut, they will offer way less or even wait for him to be cut. So they HAVE to spin it like they are keeping him, even letting him compete for the starting role. But it's all to keep his value high. The Jets may very well draft a QB high if they think that Kellen is not "it", or in hopes of having a Brees/Rivers situation here, one Schott is very familiar with. But all the statements to the contrary make it even MORE likely that CHad will not be a Jet next season either through trade or even a release.
this team they are building is a win now/soon team. there is no way they are going to let chad go, and not have a viable back up. remember rick mier/ray lucas? the second most important position on the team is backup qb. i understand the $ issue with chad, but imo, there is no way they let him go. do you really think if we draft a qb, he is gonna be our back up? we all know clemons did'nt show enough last season to annoint him our qb of the future. do you really think given all the $ we spent in fa, that we are gonna dump chad and rely on clemons? i don't see that happening.
I think Johnnysd is right...it would seem the Jets are doing their best to keep Chad's value from sinking....I think they will pull the trigger on him on draftday...and unload him to one of the teams that perhaps didn't get the QB they were looking for in the draft. It makes no sense to: 1) keep a guy with a huge salary so he can carry a clipboard 2) say there's a QB competition, when one of the competitors was benched outright cause he couldn't do the job when the job was his to begin with. The CS and FO would look like morons if they gave Chad the starting job again in 2008.
How does saying they are going to keep him increase his trade value? Does this means the Jets are competing for Chads services and whom ever singularly or multiple teams that want him will have to compete with the Jets strong desire to keep him? Guys are graded out in the NFL and teams don't get baited into offering more than value because a team isn't interested in moving a player. Chad is worth what he is worth to what ever teams might be interested in him. Whether or not we want to trade him has little or nothing to do with his value. It would be like saying not putting my house up for sale increases its value, it doesn't.
I'm sure any team would want a physical...Pennington is like Humpty Dumpty for christ sakes. But when Trent Green gets 3 million a year....anything is possible, don't ya think?
I don't see the Jets trading Chad this year. He had a bad year last year. So did most of the team. Until Clemens beats him out, Chad deserves a chance to compete for a starting position. He did, after all, help take the team to the play-offs three times. While Clemens may be the future (or not), he did not show enough last year to be handed the starting job. If Chad wins the starting QB job, he may do very well for this team. He is not P. Manning or Brady, but at his best is at least an average QB and perhaps better (with above-average accuracy). Now that I've had a chance to get over some of last year's frustrations, I could live with Chad one more year behind a revitalized offensive line, especially if we bolster the RB and/or WR positions. Even if Clemens has a great camp and beats Chad out, Clemens still would be one play from a season-ending injury and you need to have a reliable backup QB. If you trade Chad, who is that backup QB? If Clemens establishes himself as the starter this year and does well, then perhaps you look to youth behind him with a cheaper vet for insurance. Another reason Chad won't be traded is because I don't know what we would get for him coming off last year. Perhaps a 4th round pick? At best, a 3rd round pick? Would you trade possibly the best QB on the team, or at worst an average, veteran backup QB, for a 3rd or 4th round pick. I wouldn't, and if the Jets did, you can almost bet Clemens is out with an injury by the end of Week 2. Chad will not be traded this year because he is worth more to the Jets - in 2008 - than he would be to any other team. Just my two cents. Mike
Thank you. Rather than pick out and heave back each chewy chunk of tripe from the original poster's fantasy stew, you simply shut off the gas to the stove and put a lid on the pot. Efficient........
A player gets a higher value in trade if they believe you are going to keep him. If they feel that you are going to part ways regardless the offer (if any) become much less substantial. Someone has to explain the logic of this scenario: 1. QB is named starter FOR THE SEASON before season starts 2. QB plays so poorly that the coach is forced to bench the annointed starter, and does so at least two weeks late 3. Second year QB struggles like all first time starting QBs but offensive output improves and defense improves in the games he starts. He has a better record than the previous starter Here's where it gets goofy: 4. Since second year QB is not a top echelon QB by the end of the first seven games, the team holds a competition in camp between him and the starter who could not hold on to his position (???) Then goofier: 5. The starting position is given back to the deposed starter. His staunchest supporters agree he can be a great QB with an elite line RB and receiving corps, and an improved defense (ED: of course what QB wouldn't). Based upon the veteran's previous track record the best case scenario is that the team barely makes the playoffs and MAY win one game. Meanwhile: 6. The now third year QB, on the third of four years on his contract, gains no further experience. Any confidence he had built up from the seven games he started is gone. He does not develop any further and since he is already near the end of his contract, his career for the team is effectively over and we have given up. End result: 7a. Best possible outcome of this is that now we have a 25 year old QB that we have given up on. The returned starter now is also at the end of his contract. Do you give a 34 year old QB with an average career, a REALLY sketchy injury history including two surgeries to his already below average arm, a high priced (it would be) 3-5 year extension ???? 7b. Likely outcome: re-instated starter fails again but 2nd year starter is once again put into the starting role too late in the season, and this time with his confidence and leadership value lower than before. Third year starter stuggles again because of above. At the end of the season you still have no idea if he has what it takes to lead the team to success. Which leads to 8. We are left with a damagaed goods third year starter going into the last year of his contract and an aging broke down ineffective QB who has proven his days are over. Result: the team is F&*&ed for the next 2-3 years or more and instantly rebuilding again. Any dispassionate view of the QB situation would realize that starting Chad again under any circumstance except (see below) is utter madness for this organization and a instant recipe for DOOM for this franchise. It is the worst decision that this team could ever make. The best we can hope for is mediocrity. THE BEST IS MEDIOCRITY....is that OK with you? EXCEPTION: Three things have to be true for the exception to starting Pennington again: A. You have given up totally on Kellen and do not really feel he deserves or has earned the right for another opportunity B. You have given up on the upcoming season before it starts C. You draft a QB (probably at 6) with the intent of starting Pennington for one more season and turning the reins over to the new rookie the following year. Absent of that, any scenario where Pennington starts again (other than injury) is just MADNESS and incompetence by the coaching staff. It would be a FATAL and team destroying decision.
I would normaly agree with all that, but you can not forget the fact that the Jets offense was such a mess last year in so many spots other then QB, it's been said a million times already but it would have mattered little no matter who the Jets QB was last year, no running game, no protection, receiving core with no depth, Chad was a sitting duck, as was Clemens, the Jets probably want to see what Pennington does with a line and a running game again, if he chokes now, then they'll know for sure he's done before they send him off only to have him to be a pro bowler with some other team with the right tools around him.
Quote: "...But the Jets FO is in a tough spot. The harsh reality is that Chad is a prime candidate for being cut. He has no role on the team and he is a huge financial drain. Like D-Rob if the rest of the league knows he may be cut, they will offer way less or even wait for him to be cut..." Chad has a role, otherwise, the NYJ would not tell his agent that Chad's going nowhere this year. Remember, this agent doesn't just represent Chad. You don't lie to guys you have to keep doing business with, gigidygo8...! Now, just what is Chad's role? Well, I think the FO and the CS of the NYJ are very smart to say that Chad has to define it for himself. If Chad is plenty good enough and deserving for starting at QB for the NYJ, then let him prove it in an open competition. He's being paid plenty. Why shouldn't he take the direction of the CS? The answer is, of course he should. He's being asked to put his money and body in where his mouth already is. That's a fair request. You guys that don't like to lose and rush to blame the most convenient scapegoat have to be suffering a lot when your closely held grudges are not shared by the people in charge. I don't like to lose either, but I want to focus on what ails this team, not the scapegoat. I want to get rid of this toothache, not prolong it. You guys just want to put some gum on that tooth and believe it will go away. We need to focus on the OL, and the DL, and the LBs -- when these units are running sweetly and powerfully, then we can worry about the ballet dancers and whether they're up to taking advantage.
Dump Chad. Let him go be a backup somewhere else or compete for the Falcons' starting QB job. Give Kellen the reigns without him having to look over his shoulder. Just my 2c.
Chad will be the starter come Sept. Unless Kellen has a major transformation, it is Chad and rightfully so. Before last year he won everytime he played. Further, Chad was not benched as much because he was bad, but rather because we were out of playoff contention and the coaches wanted to see what they had in Clemmens. If KC was great then maybe Chad would be gone. But he wasn't and Chad remains our best option. Unless he gets hurt, Chat will beat KC in camp and will be the starter come Sept. Take it to the bank.
he was a sitting duck, or he was throwing ducks? i didn't see any quacking passes when clemens played behind the same line.........
