As per ESPN Hashmarks blog by Matt Mosley... March 31, 2008 12:31 PM Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson As the NFL meetings get going, the Broncos are starting to revive their interest in Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson. The Broncos were close to dealing for Robertson in mid-March but the talks were stalled when the team suddenly fired general manager Ted Sundquist on March 12. Sundquist was the point man in the talks with the Jets. With Sundquist now out of the picture and with Denver still needing a force in the middle of its young front four, the team has reconsidered making a deal for Robertson, a talented player who doesn't fit in the Jets' scheme. Still, finalizing a deal will be difficult for Denver. Robertson's contract will have to be restructured and the team has been in on-again, off-again talks with his agent, Hadley Engelhard, for several weeks. Robertson is due a $3 million bonus in June and he has salary-cap number of about $11 million for this season. Denver would have to redo the deal to make it fiscally worthwhile, especially with the Broncos in a cost-conscience mode this offseason. The Broncos are said not to be overly concerned about an Robertson's knee problem. The issue was serious enough, however, to negatively impact a potential trade early in March that would have sent Robertson to Cincinnati for two mid-round picks. At this point, it seems, the only hurdle standing in the way of Denver making its biggest splash of the offseason is coming to an agreement with Robertson financially.
Any extra picks we get for Robertson would be a successful effort IMO. Perhaps we can luck up for once and get a impact rookie like last draft.
Wow, what a roller coaster. This article seems peculiarly old. Didn't D-Rob fail a physical with the Broncs as well? It didn't mention that.
That's great news. If we let him go we save tons and he probably IS nearing the end of his possible productivity. It says posted the 31st which is today, and mentions the ides of March, so I think it's current.
DRob needs to get traded or released. We need to sign out draft picks too and we will run out of cap with him in the middle. Even a 4th rounder is good. It will most likely be a 4th plus a conditional upto 2nd rounder next yr depending on DRobs performance. Like Vilma's deal, we probably will switch the 4th if DRob plays good next yr in exchange for their 2nd...I would take the 4th rite now and pick up a sleeper. Jets are pretty good at finding good players deep in the draft.
how about this for a trade Broncos get #6 overall, and Robertson Jets get #12 overall their 2nd round pick, a 5th and a 7th. So basically Jets lose value on a trade back in round one, but they save serious cap by dumping Robertson. the cincy deal was for a 4th and a 5th. So if we separated the 2, it is D-rob for a 5 and 7 and the trade up for a 1 and 2. Jets lose value on both, but they still come away with four picks and serious cap room as D-rob is gone. Broncos get their DT, but are in a position to select another at #6 or a guy like Mcfadden to help Cutler or even Gholston, so they move up for cheap plus get their DT but because of his knee problems he may only last 2 more years, so getting a replacement is a nessity.
That sounds really good to me if we don't have McFadden or Gholston at 6. If there's only McFadden, we need to trade out of there definitely, imo. Who would you say we would be targeting at 12?
Why exactly again will a cost-sensitive team like the Broncos even consider this deal and pay the guaranteed money for the player picked at the 6th spot?
Why? Like I said, if Robertsons knees are that bad, they need a replacement for him so a move up to secure Sedrick Ellis is a possibility. Also there is the idea that they have options if they move up pre-draft they could also take Mcfadden, because Cutler needs weapons, also Gholston would help out their defense as well. You could even treat it as 2 trades if you wanted. Jets are on the clock at #6, and the Broncos move up to 6 and get Ellis. then the second day the jets are desperate to get rid of Robertson for some value so they drop their asking price even more, so the Broncos bite and take robertson with a deal basically in place for his contract to be re-worked because they have been negotiating for months...
Why would they want DRob if they felt his knees were so bad that they needed to draft his replacement the year they got him? Also as was pointed out, they are in bad shape cap wise which is why they are having trouble with reworking the contract. Your scenario would have them having to rework his contract and pay a #6 pick.
It's common knowledge in sports that if a team wants a certain player to pass a physical, the player will. How do you think Vilma passed the Saints physical?
