The thing you get out of Chad as the starter this year is this years drafted QB will get to sit and learn for a year and the team will have a veteran QB that they believe they can win with every week.
I agree with you Winston and the one thing I am loving about this FO is that they seem to agree as well. They went on the great QB tour their first year and came away with Clemens and now this year it seems they are doing their due dilligence into the QB prospects entering this draft. The closer we get to the draft the more I think it is likely that we take Matt Ryan if he is available at the 6 spot. You dont send the whole calvary of offensive coaches plus HC and GM to a private workout if their isn't legitimate interest in drafting him. I certainly wouldn't complain if we took the best QB prospect in the draft.
I think you might hear an audible groan if Ryan is picked but if he is after passing on Cutler, Lienart and Quinn who we could have gotten last year, this will be the pick that decides the future of both Tanny and Mangini. This may very well be why Woody has given his seal of approval on a mediocre 08 season?
I would have picked up Culpepper for a year and hired the best Qb's coach I could find to start grooming Kellen or whoever we decided to draft this year as the heir apparent. I would not pay Chad 7 mil a year to hold a clipboard or play as a Qb who is warming up a spot for somebody that can actually win it for us five years from now.
The league basically sucks a mediocre game manger who doesn't make mistakes with a good D and OL can win 8 to 10 games. Will he take us on a playoff run through 3 solid teams, absolutely not but if we draft Ryan, Flacco or Brohm and want them to sit for a year, it makes perfect sense to start Chad.
Kellen Can win 8-10 games making mistakes and might actually have an upside. It is a wasted season if Chad starts. If he is on the team he can coach Flacco, Ryan or whoever from the bench where he belongs.
The difference is Clemens hasn't proven he can win 8-10 games in this league, while Chad has. For a HC & FO that might be in a make or break year going with the proven commodity over the unknown will win out every time.
Ah see thats part of the problem. Pennington has proven he can win 8-10 games, but when he's losing and playing poorly it's everyone else' fault. Agree on the proven commodity though. If we draft a QB I'd bet the farm that Pennington will be the starter next season.
If the Daily news story is right this is not a make or break year for Tangini. Chad can win 8-10 games when he has a Hof Running back, Good Defense or and easy schedule. We have a shoddy d-line at best, need a Cb, Safety and our big Free agent signing at Lb could be Brian Thomas part 2. In other words Chad has to actually make plays and score some points to win games this year. As it stands and this is something he has proven he can not do. I don't care how good our O-line is teams can take your best weapon away in the Nfl if your one dimensional. That Playfake Crap has now worked in years and that easy 2006 schedule was an absolute Fluke.
Good Point. I mean he only got that big contract for the buck to not stop at him when the team loses. Its the offensive line that did not allow a sack when we played the Giants last year or we need a third Wr. There is always an excuse after one of his pix six passes are brought back to end games.
It's not about the QB, it's about the offense. Until you guys look at the whole offense, how are you going to know whether we have a chance to win? We have to have a running game that people respect. If the OL can't clear the way for our backs to gain serious yardage and keep the chains moving at will, it doesn't matter who the QB is. Just because we have signed two FAs on the OL doesn't mean the OL is fixed. There is little or no depth. We don't know if they will work well together or not. What happens if there's an injury? Or Two? Who will we draft to shore up the coverage on the OL? How well will Callahan work with the newbies? How will Callahan get the 1st string to work together? What can conditioning do to keep the OL from getting hurt? These are all more important issues for the CS than what's wrong or right with the ballet dancers.
KCK you keep assuming that everyone thinks that QB is the only problem on offense. We know it's not. We need a WR, we need way better OL play, and we need better QB play. We know Pennington can put up respectable numbers when he has top notch support. When the line improves, so does everyone around them. The problem is more with Penningtons ceiling. It's my opinion that we've seen the best of Pennington and that his best years are behind him. His best season was 02' and since then he's not had a season that could be considered better then 'good', and even thats debatable. We may be with him for better or worse this season. If thats the case so be it, but I don't think there's an argument out there that will convince me that Pennington is the long term answer. I don't hate CP, he gave Jets fans some good memories and helped this team achieve some success while he was at it. He's not an elite QB though. Call it greed, call it impatience, call it whatever you want, but I don't think the Jets should stop looking for a QB until they find a guy that can become one of the best in the league.
The 49ers first SB team under Montana 19th ranked rushing O in yards 3.5 per attempt which ranked 28th. The Jets last year 19th ranked rushing O in yards 3.8 per attempt which ranked 23. There are lots of ways to win in the NFL, having a QB who can throw the ball helps. I know Montana didn't have a big arm, unless you compare it to Pennington's current arm.
Winston, the NYJ are attempting to de-emphasize the overarching criticality of the QB. Whether the QB goes down or not, whether he throws accurately every time, this is not the thing that is going to kill the NYJ wins, if the CS has their way with it. They are looking to build up the OL so that any ole ballet dancer can pas de deux through those two yard wide holes that stay open for a minute. The OL has to be built up to dominate; then they can run at will, then they can play-fake, and then they can pass. But the OL has to be ready to win the game with the run. And the defense, while staying well-rested, must become ferocious ALL the time not at the end of the fruitless season ONLY. The defense has to learn to play any other team to a standstill, the way they rise up against the Pats (at least once a year). The defense has to learn what it means to STOP THE RUN. The DL has to manhandle the line of scrimmage. These are the things that will matter the most and for the long run. A lot of people simply want to argue about Chad or Kellen. I think that's not important until the NYJ demonstrates that they have successfully address the OL and the defense. If most of the team is excellent, if the OL can block for runs and passes, and the DL can stop the other team, then they don't have to rely upon one single arm to win or lose. It doesn't matter who the QB is so long as he doesn't drop the ball. We have a long way to go to become winners (I'm not talking 10-6 against two-day old soggy macaroni either). I'm talking about being able to beat ANYBODY ANYTIME, NOW, or later.
If we are going to put the 85 Bears D on the field with the 66 Packers O. Why pay 6MM per for a guy who just doesn't have to drop the ball when you can put it on a Hog for the OL or a pass rusher on the DL? And why is your name keep Chad and Clemens why Tui and Smith would do the trick at a fraction of the price.
You do realize that even if we have the best offensive line in football and a top ten defense that we are going to be playing teams with similar talent for 3 to four weeks in a row come playoff time. You do realize that Playoff-Superbowl caliber teams can stop anyones strength when it is one dimensional. Reference the running of Lt in the playoffs every year and Tom Brady in the Superbowl last year. Make no mistake about it if we get in the playoffs the opposing teams will MAKE Chad throw and we will lose because they have the talent to do it come playoff time. They will force him to beat us with the pass because all they really have to worry about is the run. When you have elite defenses and 50% of the field does not have to be covered it is kind of hard to beat a good team. I agree 100% with you when you say lets be able to beat anybody at anytime. Unfortunately it starts with Kellen or the rookie they draft this year or next. You can give Chad the Colts or Pats offense and he still would not get past the second round of the playoffs.
So lets make sure that 21 of the 22 starters are HOFers and the QB is "eh, so so"... How many teams have won it all like that? 4 out of 42? Try again.
