Take a look, since 1997, the raiders have only taken 3 offensive players in the first round. All offensive tackles. I just don't see it. 2006 ? Michael Huff, S, seventh overall: Taken ahead of quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler, Huff started all 16 games as a rookie, but had no sacks, interceptions or fumble recoveries. 2005 ? Fabian Washington, CB, 23rd: Oakland traded the No. 7 pick in the deal for Randy Moss, but moved into the first round to get Washington, who has shown improvement each year, but did get picked on at times last season. 2004 ? Robert Gallery, OT, second: Considered a can't-miss prospect, Gallery has struggled as the Raiders have shuttled him between left and right tackle and changed offensive line coaches. Oakland hopes new line coach Tom Cable can bring out the best in Gallery, something the team has yet to see. 2003 ? Nnamdi Asomugha, CB, 31st: Oakland's best first-round pick in recent years, Asomugha had a breakthrough season in 2006. He was one of the top cover cornerbacks in the league last season and also had eight interceptions. 2003 ? Tyler Brayton, DE, 32nd: Has just six sacks in 63 career games at both defensive end and linebacker. Perhaps best known for kneeing Seattle's Jerramy Stevens in the groin at the end of a play in a nationally televised game last season. 2002 ? Phillip Buchanon, CB, 17th: A speedster expected to contribute on defense and special teams, Buchanon lasted just three seasons in Oakland before being traded to Houston. 2002 ? Napoleon Harris, LB, 23rd: Started 13 games as a rookie as Oakland went to the Super Bowl, but was traded to Minnesota in 2005 for Randy Moss. Lost his starting job with the Vikings and now is in Kansas City. 2001 ? Derrick Gibson, S, 28th: Has intercepted just three passes in six seasons and was replaced in the starting lineup last year by Huff. Gibson is not expected back in 2007. 2000 ? Sebastian Janikowski, PK, 17th: The first kicker taken in the first round of the draft in 21 years, Janikowski has been a solid pro, but probably not worth a first-round pick. He has a strong leg, but has been inconsistent at times. Seattle took star RB Shaun Alexander two picks later. 1999 ? Matt Stinchcomb, OT, 18th: Injured his shoulder as a rookie and never was able to establish himself in the NFL. 1998 ? Charles Woodson, CB, fourth: Made three Pro Bowls with the Raiders and was a key part of the 2002 AFC championship team. Injuries held Woodson back and he never quite lived up to the hype he had as a Heisman Trophy winner. 1998 ? Mo Collins, OT, 23rd: Oakland traded up to select Collins, who was a solid blocker before injuries cut short his career 1997 ? Darrell Russell, DT, second: Made two Pro Bowls with Oakland before his promising career was derailed by drugs. Was out of the NFL by 2003 and died in a car crash in December 2005.
I want Darren McFadden wearning Green and White...so hopefully the Raiders follow the trend and take a defensive player. Maybe Sedrick Ellis or Glenn Dorsey.
I think the Raider will either take Gholston or McFadden, assuming they stay where they are and we get the ne they dont take.
Just keep your fingers crossed that Gholston or McFadden falls to #6. I would love to buy a green and white McFadden jersey.
I agree..only concern I have is that the rams take Gholston at 2....Than we're really screwed if we cant find a trade partner..
almost all of those guys have big "tangibles", that is, speed (DB's), arm (in JaMarcus's case) or strength (OL?). this tells me that Al Davis will go for the guy with the best measurables and worry about intangibles (like character, locker room presence, etc) later. the top guys in the measurables are mcfadden, j. long and dorsey. i say he takes one of those three.
I would be absolutely shocked if the Rams took him at 2, I think it would be a terrible pick for them over Jake Long who in my eyes is a much better prospect or even Dorsey if he is deemed healthy. I personally wouldn't care if Gholston goes 2 though, I am not all that crazy about him in our D. I would prefer to trade down to the 9-14 range and take Harvey than stay at 6 and take Gholston. I think Harvey is a better fit as an OLB than Gholston is. My ideal first round has McFadden available and taken by the Jets.
Gosh, I wish I knew the outcome of this already. I would either be rejoicing from now till April 26th or crying in sorrow. At least Hornet will have a big birthday bash on the 26th. I hope I am celebrating the drafting of Gholston or McFadden or landing a ton of great picks in a trade down scenario.
Right about now, Gholston appears to be the most coveted player in this year's draft. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dolphins take him, mainly because everyone else wants him.
Bill Parcells is going to take someone because everyone else wants him? Then I wish we could go back to '97 and take Pace.
I think they will go with Chris Long (if they don't trade down, that is) but, I have this feeling they might just take Gholston first, and then take offers for him later. I see alot of wheeling and dealing early in this draft, and mostly in the top ten picks.
I read today that Davis is comparing McFadden to Bo Jackson (aside from playing baseball too). If he believes that I think he takes him.
Shit. It's not looking good for us. I think Gholston will be gone, too. What then? Who do we take now?
your thinking of chris long. lol thats the player who can fit in anywhere and no analyst can say shit about.
No. I meant Gholston. He has surely climbed in many draft gurus' boards. He is described as the best defensive playmaker to come out in this year's draft.
That's a bad assumption by whoever is making it. Gholston has never played OLB. He is probably too light to play DE in the NFL which means it will be an entirely new position for him. He will have a lot more responsibility than to just rush the passer. Long on the other hand is big enough to play either.
