In 04 which QB was playing on a better team? The 04 team winning % was as good with Quincy on Crack as it was with Pennington.
Of course. Just saying there were better QBs on better teams that also didn't get it done. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Diego and of course the Colts.
Quincy Carter had a higher QB rating, a better TD to Int ration a much higher YPA and YPC than Chad on the same team and that was stoned on crack. The Jets had a much better D and much better running game than Ind not even comparable. I think IND was in the bottom 5 on D that year. Interesting that you bring up those 3 teams because each of the QB's on those 3 teams have all taken their teams further than Pennington.
That's why I brought them up but I only brought them up in regards to '04. Don't get me wrong, I never wanted Pennington. I would have preferred Testaverde and day despite all of his old age issues. Now, however, I prefer Pennington over Clemens in a second. If Clemens can show more than he did last year I will change my mind but so far he has been worse than terrible.
Clemens is very raw, his footwork was terrible, he really looks poor behind center and in the pocket but he still has a live arm and great release. If the guy isn't the starter in year 3 chances are he will be gone in two years. Herm made the same mistake with Chad in year 3 by not giving him all the reps and starting him from day 1 in his 3rd year. Vinny like Chad was done and by starting Vinny over Chad Herm cost the team 2 or 3 wins and maybe a bye and a real shot at a SB in 02 when Chad was still healthy.
yeah, and eli was able to get a sb win because he was able to make big plays when they needed them. he was able to stretch defenses because he could throw the long ball and eli's passer rating was a 95.7 in the playoffs he was able to do what chad will never do, step it up to the next level in the playoffs i don't even see why u would compare them. a high completion percentage means nothing if you can only make 5 yard dump offs. teams play chade up in the box because they know his arm is jello. he wasnt able to get us to the big show when he was younger and hadnt gone through 2 shoulder surgeries he's not going to get us there now
The problem with Clemens last year was that he couldn't even make the 5 yard throws. The offense was exactly the same with both of them and he would miss his receivers by 5 yards on a 5 yard pass. That is just pathetic. No doubt in my mind we need a new QB but we don't have one now. So who is the best option with what we have? It's also, I would assume, why we have a QB competition coming up this summer.
well we know what chad can not do, take us where we need to go, i say let clemens start if he cant make plays with this new o line then we get a new qb on 09, but chad has the experience and played crappy, clemens in his first starting role just thrown in midway through the season, did anyone really expect him to do well?
Whoever plays better in camp will start and yes everybody expected Clemens to play better. He had a year and a half to get ready. Nobody expected him to be the worst QB in the league.
Clemens did stink last year but he was still better in several games than Chad was. Chad consistently stunk, granted it was a low level stale stinkyness that you could almost get used to. Clemens was up and down sometimes taking stink to a new level making your eyes tear but other times smelling almost spring time fresh.
I'm sure that's why there is an open competition. He has had all winter to work on his footwork and release. We will see what he has learned or didn't learn when camp opens. I know it appears Pennington stunk but he still had the 2nd highest completion ration in the league(again). He trailed only Brady by .1 of a percentage point. 68.9 to 68.8. People can knock it all they want but believe me that is not taken lightly by the coaching staff. It's why he is still considered the favorite to start this year too. Even if you are only throwing 5 yard passes and are completing more then 2/3 of them you have a great chance of moving the chains.
Moving the chains and having long drives also increases the chances of something bad happening before you score which occurred at a very high percentage with Chad last year. The more plays you need to get down the field the greater the chance of a fumble or an int or a penalty killing your scoring drive. Chad may have had a great completion % but he was outright terrible at putting points on the board.
Yeah, bad decisions at the worst times. That and Mangini's insistence that we could run the ball inside the red zone. Ridiculous coaching decisions didn't help.
Mid-season last year, I would have challenged the who is better part, but I have to say Eli is better; he has the ring to prove it. As far as him making the best play in SB history; some of the Lynn Swan plays in the 70's SB's were unreal, we can't forget about Joe Montana either....... I will have to say that the Manning/Tyree play has to be in the top 5 SB plays ever. When one considers that Eli was nearly tackled for a loss and somehow magically escaped and threw a 35 yard pass to Tyree, who jumps up and catches the ball on the back of his helmet going backwards, comes down on his back and the ball never touches the ground (the play was indisputible), it was sure electrifying, to say the least.
To be honest with you I think that Swann Catch on the sidelines was a harder play than the Tyree catch and Eli Scramble. I would have said Eli was better last year as well. At this point I think the only starting Qb's i would not take over chad are the Vikings, Bears and Chiefs. That is it.
You can't tell me you would not want a ball control running game that methodically moved the chains down and marched down the field? This is what the Jets were doing with the short passing game last year, problem is there was no running game so when we got into the red zone we had to settle for fieldgoals. What is funny is how everybody says they are stacking the box and that is why our offense sucked and Chad shouldn't be the QB. We could not run the ball at all last year against 6 in the box or 8 in the box. If you have the OL to run deeper routes, then you can't tell me Chad can't hit a WR past 15 yards that is open. He consistently does it, he just doesn't take stupid chances doing it. Also, he completes a high percentage of passes even though some claim the entire defense is in the box.
