Hypothetically speaking if the draft goes the "worst" way possible , meaning Chris Long,Vernon Gholston, Jake Long, Darren McFadden, and then Sedrick Ellis/Glenn Dorsery in that order which right now is very possible. That mean the 3 guys we have been targeted are all gone.
Ellis nor Dorsey are options because they dont fit the 3-4.And the other players on are board that are worth picking are CB's Leodis McKelvin and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.And at this point no one is worth trading up for so i dont see us trading down.
Which one would u take or do we go in another direction.

I say Cromartie the upside is through the roof, great ball skills, 4.3 speed, tall at 6'2.

I'm not crazy about either one of them at the 6 spot and hate the idea of another first round CB. If we are going to reach for anyone at the 6 spot, i'd prefer they reached for Harvey who is quickly becoming my favorite OLB prospect for our D, outside of only C. Long.

Here's a hypothetical: looking back at last year's draft, there were supposedly no top 10 pick corners available. If we had possessed the 6 pick and selected Revis, how would you have viewed that pick in retrospect?

Hypothetically if we had the 6th pick we should have picked Adrian Peterson, but if we picked Revis then yeah we would have "reached' for him but if that is the player u "need" then u have to take him what are u gonna do take somebody that u dont need at that spot. U cant trade down just because u want to trade down , u have to have someone willing to trade with u.
Besides i wanted Revis bad last year i was happy as hell that we picked him over Leon Hall.

i read that as abyzmul asking if, in retrospect, Revis would have been worth the 6th pick (based on his play this year).

although, I could have interpreted that incorrectly...

For now, McKelvin would be the better pick because of the potential contributions he can make on ST. The Jets can go 3-deep on potential Pro Bowl kick returners.

But DRC's potential is very hard to ignore.

Ah, the worst possible scenario for us... I like Cromartie's upside though and I'd go with him if we went CB. He has all the numbers to be great and even looked very good during the Senior Bowl week.

I would consider a guy like OLB Derrick Harvey or DE Phillip Merling as well. But if Sedrick Ellis and/or Glenn Dorsey are around at #6, I think we could find a trade down partner with the DT-needy Bengals (#9), Saints (#10), Broncos (#12), Bears (#13) or Panthers (#14). All of these teams are in need of a play-making DT and these two guys are well-worth a Top-5 choice. I would expect some phone calls about this pick especially from Denver or Cincinnati...

Correct, I'm not talking about any other players that were available, but would people have justified, after the fact, the drafting of Revis at the 6 spot? Since no 'expert' deemed Revis worthy of anything higher than where we picked him, and a lot criticized drafting him where we did. The pre-draft speculative rankings usually amount to a hill of ant shit when it comes down to it. I'm not saying Revis, right now, would justify being drafted that high and we probably will not know that for another couple of years, but the truth about the strength of a draft is usually very different from how pundits predict it is.

As far as Adrian Peterson... in restrospect, he would never have dropped out of the top 3.

We are probably targeting 4 guys and not 3..but be that as it may. I seriously doubt we take a CB no matter what we get stuck with at #6. We didn't need one last year and we certainly don't need another one this year in the first round. We probably end up taking a reach pick like Ellis even though I agree he doesn't fit.

Well, if we had to pick from one of them then i would go with Cromartie. He has more potential. He also showed that he is in the same league as other prospects from top school by his showing at the senior bowl and the combine. He has great size and speed. His technique is his only true weakness, but that is something that can be taught.

If we are in that type of situation however I would love us to either go with Harvey, Merling, or even reach for a guy like Sweed, or Thomas. Merling would be a great 3-4 DE once Ellis is out of gas. And once he adds a good 5-10 pounds.

That would make a not-so good situation much better, being that we still got Cromartie later at #9 or #10 and pick up a 3rd rounder.

I would love either ... would rather find a partner & trade back a few spot first ... but even at 6 I don't mind taking corner. I know that Cromartie 's stock has risen with his workouts .... but McKelvin was rated higher before those workouts for a reason ... the game film shows he is a player & his ability on special teams (while not needed because of Miller & Washington .. oh & Stucky) - does add another plus in his corner.

Cromartie seems to be the playmaker, while McKelvin is more of a technical CB and ST Star. Its tough to tell who is better. I'd give it to McKelvin right now with Cromartie taking a year to get up to McKelvin's level. In 2009, they will be evenly talented.

yeah, the verdict is still out on Revis as you can't base anything on any player on solely one year, especially a player's rookie year. see Erik Coleman.

having said that, if you want to speak hypothetically and assume Revis will play like he did this past year AND only improve, then I think he would warrant a top 10 pick. #6? i don't know, but #9 or #10? you'd be hard pressed to argue against that.

maybe another way of looking at it is, if someone, right now, offered us a pick between 14-32 for Revis would you take it? or would you demand something within the top 10 because that's what he's worth?

(sorry if this is hijacking the thread; it's just interesting to consider.)

I honestly think you could pull multiple picks for Revis at this point. His 2nd half was of a 4 year starter. Maybe a 1st and maybe a conditional in 09, like the Vilma trade. We all know the kid is that good. Can we assume he'll be better than Aaron Glenn was for us?

I agree that Revis looked good as a rookie. There are two things however that keep me from being completely sold. For a good part of the year he was leading the team in tackles. Never a good sign for a CB. Secondly, until we can stop the run consistently we will never really know how good a CB he really is.

I feel him leading the team in tackles comes from the inability to stop the run (as you said) before Harris got in there, and he was getting picked on for the 1st half as well, which means his WR assignment is getting the ball and Revis is tackling him.

If Jenkins does his job, and we improve the run and pass rush, then his tackles will go down and INTs will go up.

Neither. Trade down or take Mendenhall.

I don't think either of them has the ability to warrant the 6th pick. If we are stuck there and can't trade down, I'd much rather take a guy who the FO feels is NFL ready to go and proper value for the slot. As much as I want Limas Sweed, I'd still be hard pressed to say it's a good idea at the 6.

If you look around the league and see which guys are getting ridiculous dough, its the linemen (this includes 3-4 OLB). Receivers and RBs on the other hand appear to get tossed around like Halloween candy, so I'd definitely lean toward drafting the bulk at that spot.

I'm not sure I'd be that excited about taking a corner at #6, but of the two it should be Cromartie, without question. I'm not sure there is anything right now that McKelvin does better than Cromartie to be totally honest, and there are certain things that DRC does a LOT better than McKelvin. Just to note, DRC is a great return man in his own right to those saying McKelvin has the ST advantage.
