I think the thing that McFadden has the most going for him from the FO's POV other than his obvious production is his versatility. He's got the size and speed to split out wide and line up at WR, has played QB before, and could fill these roles this season behind Jones.
I believe the point of every draft pick is to select the next HOF, yes.... but with McFadden's boom or bust grade i'd like to take the "boom" if he's drafted. He's just not a player i like.
Kurt I hardly ever have any issues with what you say, but #4 is just a stupid way of thinking about things. Every player in any sport is only one major knee injury away from never playing again. For crying out loud Mcfadden is one knee injury away from being done. That isn't a reason to draft or not draft a guy. If some one has a history of knee injuries, then that would be a significant reason to not draft them, but neither Jones nor Mcfadden have histories of knee injuries, so the overall point is moot. I still disagree with drafting Mcfadden, but if he is the BPA at 6 he almost has to be selected unless we can get a decent trade down deal. I also fully believe that Jones can be that 1450-1600 yard back behind a new o-line.
Not being a fan of McFadden, although I've seen him play well a few times this past year, I will say that his versatility is interesting from the POV of the NYJ. Having a stretch-the-field guy who can move around in motion while TJ is set up seven yards behind the QB will make a lot of people in the secondary very nervous. Especially, if the QB rolls out on the first play and throws it down the field to the sprinting DMC, in the same fashion that Chad hit Coles on the second play of one of those early 07 games for a long-distance TD. Do it once, and you will take the defense's mind off of TJ. I like that -- especially if we have an OL that can stomp them out. DMC's versatility could be very interesting, I'll go along with that. Still, if he's the inevitable choice at No. 6, then that's who we got. But I would still, if I had a choice, draft that Gholston every time.
I don't particularly like him either. I like Chris Long. I might settle for Golston although he has some question marks too and McFadden is third on my list. I would just hope that if any one of the three are there when we pick we take them and don't make the blunder of the century that we live to regret forever.
everyone runs this blah blah about jones and washington. first off jones wont be here in 3 years, and people can post that theres great RB's coming in the next yr or two I still see McFadden as a rare prospect if he succeeds. mcfadden could play a reggie bush role or let washington in the slot for a few snaps. theres alot of versatility available due to the overall talent level of those 3. chatman is a nonfactor in all reality moving forward as a team. point in case, in the big picture having jones rotate and teach leon/mcfadden till hes gone, and looking into the future of a leon/mcfadden duo. that is a picture that would have me extatic if he fell to us at 6. thats just me. id also like gholston or rodgers-cromartie, or limas sweed
For the first time in a long while I'm comfortable with pretty much any of our projected options at #6. My preferred selection would be Gholston but I seriously think he'll get taken before we're up. I'm down with McFadden he'd be our first 'home run' threat in a long time. I'd also be cool with Sedrick Ellis for 34DE. Basically, I think no matter how you look at it we're getting a good player who'll be able to start right away. But let's hope Gholston is there haha
Ellis is not a 3-4 DE. Nobody thinks he is. Neither is Dorsey. And neither are projected to go to teams that run the 3-4 so forget them. I doubt we have any interest in Ryan as it seems we didn't even show up for his pro day although that could be more smoke too. Jake Long is expected to be gone so that leaves Chris Long, Golston and McFadden as probably the only three we are and should be interested in. I still say we have to be in a position to get one of them because there is no assurances we will be able to trade down if all those guys are gone.
That why the NFL should do what the NBA does u get a certain amount of money for the draft postion u was taken and that ends all that. How offen do u hear of a NBA player holding that just been drafted?
The NFL pretty much does do that. The 1st pick sets this years market. The 2nd gets less than the 1st and more than the 3rd..the 3rd gets less than the 2nd and more than the 4th..and so on. The only questions are how the quarenteed monies will be paid out and the length of the contract. The contract length is pretty well set too. There is a rookie salary pool established by the NFL each year that tells you the maximum amount you can spend in salary for all of your rookies combined. It really isn't that much different then what the NBA does.
That is what has been reported. Scouts and coaches will have to evaluate whether the statistic is real; meaning not being able to execute or his numbers may be a bi-product of the system he played in. Nevertheless, DMC has to convince people that he is coachable and can improve his catching abilities. A back has to catch in the NFL. I just thought of something amuzing: It would be ironic if Darren McFadden played for the Trojans.
Exactly. Not only that, but the assumed super-versatility of this guy is amazing to me. He's been asked to throw the ball...that doesn't mean it's a skill. He wasn't very good at catching balls for the Razorback's either. I till think Mendenhall ends up the better pro back.
bush is garbage homey for all the hype. it became how obvious McAllister carried that team during the playoff run in 06. sure hes still young. but the guy cant run between tackles and is better off a slot reciever. i think mcfadden will be better than bush. yes i said it. it should be obvious at this point too.
Mendenhall definitely has the potential to be a "carry the full load" back. I do not see that in Mcfadden yet and neither do his GF's.
you sure, i think his girlfriends carried the full load. anyways, mendenhall is impressive but you have a one year performer versus someone who was a workhorse for 3 yrs in the SEC. call the offense they ran gimicky if youd like but SEC is the toughest conference everyone knew where the ball was going and the guy still dominated. people can knock him all theyd like he'll be a great player.
Well I stand corrected. As a guy who watches zero college ball and doesn't find it interesting at all I mearly go by what others are saying when deciding who'd be a good fit here... I've heard others say he could play 3-4 DE and I've heard others say he can't so I don't know what to believe but I'll just assume you're right cause he's probably never played 34DE. Hopefully that made sense hahah
agreed...but the "playing only one year" argument has two sides when it comes to Mendehall. The guy will have next to no wear & tear on is body...and will be fresh as a daisy coming out of the draft. McFadden is a great talent....he defenitly gets more hype than Mendenhall....but i like Mendenhall's intangibles (speed, size, runs btw the tackes, great pass catcher out of the backfield)....we won't end up selecting him (my hunch is that he won't fall past the Bears at #14...hometown boy and all)....but I wouldn't sell him short because of a supposed knock of being a 1 year wonder.
