Probably not earth shattering but I find it interesting that this is found buried deep in King's column today. I know he has his pro day today at the same time Ryan does. Wonder if they will be covering both and who on the team will be where. "3. I hear Eric Mangini and Jets personnel met with Long in Charlottesville on Monday night. Hmmmm. Probably simple fact-finding. But imagine, Jets fans, a front three of 285-pound Shaun Ellis, 330-pound (they hope) Kris Jenkins and 275-pound Long. Not to rumor-monger, but if the Jets, who pick sixth, fell in love with Long, could they give Parcells enough to entice him to trade out of the pick? Remember, the last time Parcells had the first pick in the draft, 11 years ago, he was running the Jets and traded the pick to St. Louis for Orlando Pace. By the end of that weekend, the Jets had turned the top pick into seven draft choices. Parcells loves to deal. Chris Long is the best player in this draft, but there is no way we trade up to get him. We couldn't afford it for one, and with the depth in this years draft we will need our other picks. How good would it be if he fell to 6??
Just interesting that Mangini would go in a day early to meet with him. I'm sure we have no intention of trying to move up to number 1 but what if he were to fall to #3 or #4? Atlanata will already have 3 #2s after the Hall trade so it might be easier to make a deal with them depending on what player they have targeted.
I'll tell you one way the Jets might be able to afford the #1 overall... his primary weapon is a duck...
Atlanta is a prime candiadate to trade down. If they want to go QB, and are convinced KC won't, it definitely makes sense for them to slide back a few spots. They can pick up an extra pick & save money when it comes to signing Ryan.
I was surprised at that too. I thought he was projected to be a OLB. He does have the size for both though and played as a 3-4 DE in college.
He will probably play a little bit of both guys. Some downs he will have his hand on the ground, others he will be standing up.
I was about to write that Long is much more of an OLB... DE in a 3-4 he'd get pushed around way too much... let him come off the edge and wreak havoc... his athleticism and change of direction would make him a great edge guy.
Long is likely to be a rush OLB as opposed to a 3-4 end, but it's not impossible to think he could put on another 10-20 pounds and be a 3-4 end...
who knows what will happen draft day. Long is the best player in the draft and if we want him bad enough we would get him. I don't put anything past us on draft day and I would go ape shit if we got him. He is incredible.
Long will be a 3-4 OLB at the next level. He just doesn't have the frame or size to play 3-4 DE. That being said, he had an outstanding combine from an OLB POV as was incredible in the agility drills. I'm pretty sure Mangini said something along the lines of "Don't worry, you won't fall beyond the #6 pick."
