Speculation as to motive behind Jets offseason transactions varied

While it's owner Woody Johnson who signs the check, head coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum are given almost unilateral control over the Jets' football operations. In the frenetic pace of the first few weeks of free agency, the Mangini-Tannenbaum duo took full advantage of their decision-making powers, executing more high-profile transactions than any other team. Opinions on the Jets' offseason haul are mixed. Some see the additions of talented players like OG Alan Faneca, OLB Calvin Pace, NT Kris Jenkins, OT Damien Woody and FB Tony Richardson as a clear sign that the Jets are on the way back up. Others criticize the decisions, arguing that the Jets are throwing exorbitant dollars at past-their-prime (or in the case of Pace, still unproven) players. Furthermore, many of the detractors believe that Mangini and Tannenbaum are looking for a quick fix, regardless of the long-term repercussions, with the rationale being that the duo feels they need a strong 2008 season to save their jobs

Well, they're right too. This is a win now team. The days of building for three years down the road are over. Which is why it is so important to get that one big impact player in the draft. Woody saw all those empty seats last year. Sure they will sell all their tickets but a lot of income comes from the people showing up.

Huh? So someone wrote an article to say that some people liked the Jets' FA moves and some people didn't?

    Said by people who:

    1. Don't even know what the contracts look like.

    2. Count 31 and 28 as "past prime."

    3. Probably have no idea of what our cap situation is like now or in the future.

    4. Are focusing solely on the money despite the fact that our GM was knocked early in his tenure for being "only" a bean counter.

    5. Completely ignored the money being handed out on the FA market by *everyone.*

    6. Actually think these moves were made as quick fixes.

I guess I can understand what they're thinking with the last one. Contracts like the ones going out in the past two offseasons are extremely new to the NFL. For some reason the media chooses to ignore what the market is dictating and chooses to focus on the fact that non-Brady's and Manning's are being paid ridiculous amounts of money. I mean, it is MUCH easier for them to write a story about how these moves are dumb because we spent alot of money than for them to actually sit down and look at the contracts, look at what we're doing as a franchise, looking at organizational philosophy and really asking and answering the question "are they going for the quick fix." Because of the money spent, or supposedly spent because Cimini's numbers looked dramatically different from what everyone else was reporting, they choose to look at these moves as keys to the puzzle rather than pieces to the puzzle. It'll be annoying for a while, but a good draft should open a few more eyes as to what the Jets are doing.

If we draft well this April, that'll be 3 straight very productive drafts and a FA period that filled major holes with versatile, talented veterans. That tells me these moves weren't quick fixes. They were made with purpose, an intent to improve the team in the short and long term.

Iunno, doesn't seem like theres much indepth analysis going on here. It's alot of "hmmm...thats alot of money and he isn't a superstar so definitely a bad move" logic.

There's no question that this offseason has been a quick fix. The question is whether or not it will work. The Jets badly need to get back to 8 or 9 wins next season or they are in real danger of being eclipsed by the rise of Miami and Buffalo and turning into the doormat of the AFC East.

So far the Jets have solidified the trenches for the short term and on paper should improve by the 4 or 5 wins they need. If Clemens can get untracked they might even be a playoff team. That's what Mangini and Tannenbaum were tasked to do when they took the team over in 2005: turn an aging 4-12 mess back into a respectable team. For 2006 that worked and then the Jets turned back into a mess again. Now it's time to step back up to respectability and stay there while the team retools for a superbowl run in 2009 or 2010.

I haven't seen the Jets make a bad talent move so far this offseason. Every move has increased the talent and depth on the team or at worst been a lateral swap (Vilma) of assets that presumably will work out better in a 3-4.

There is nothing negative in "quick fixes" at all. A fix is a fix and so what if it costs money to accomplish it. I would much prefer spending money on a proven player rather than draft some 3rd or 4th rounder and hope they work out 3 years from now. That's the kind of thinking that got us into this mess to begin with.

I don't subscribe to the "win now" hypothesis regarding our FA acquisitions. We simply set out to fill the holes we have with proven veterans so that we can draft for value. Hardly a "win now" philosophy, this is the type of long-term blueprint that winning organizations have been following for a long time in this league.

If all team Tangini was looking for was to save their asses, then we would've made more effort to bring in a quality veteran QB and not subject the team to another year of KC's growing pains. Not very fun, but necessary in the LONG TERM scheme of things.

So have you found a balance between your "Tannenbaum/Mangini are the second coming" of 2006 and your "Tannenbaum/Mangini are worthless" of 2007?

That's going to depend on whether the draft is sound and whether the Jets win 4 games, 10 games or somewhere in between in 2008.

For the moment I'm seeing nothing to bitch about and a few things to cheer about so I'm moderating my opinion of them for now. When I see good things happen it makes me happy, when I see bad things happen it makes me angry.

Life is fucking short and I can't stand a single season that is thrown away at this point.

Their jobs are safe right now. I don't think they were threatened. It would be ludicrous if they were. They might have asked if they could do this. Look they made the playoff's the first year. They probably will make it this year. They're just doing their jobs. These moves are reasonable considering what they need and what's available in the draft. If Herm got a pass on it so will they.

Grant it it seems they are shooting for the moon but I think they are taking a shot. I'm sure they wanna make something happen. That may be unprecidented for this organization and fan's but not entirely out of the question fom a F.O. professionals standpoint. I hope this was not a kneejerk reaction. This seems premeditated and methodical. If anything they would lose their jobs because of their decision to load up at these positions none of them pan out in an attempt to get to the SB. If there were no moves in FA there's no story.

Mike and the Dog asked the same question to Tannenbaum on their show about a week or so ago. I was kind of surprised. If it weren't for last years record and they did this train of thought in my mind has no cornerstone.

I like the moves. They look agressive and smart and after the draft they might look even smarter. I may sound biased towards Tangini but i like what has happened so far. Last year sucked but they are not sitting on their keesters with their thunbs up their a$$ waiting for the roof to cave in. They are rolling up their sleeves in an attempt to get things square and be competative. And this doesn't look like a quick fix either. These signings will last for at least 3 years. Plenty of time to get to the promised land.

    IMHO

These guys will be too old to still be playing "long term". Most of them anyway so I still think it's a win now plan. You don't spend 154 million now for something that won't still be there when you think you will be ready.

"Long term" in todays NFL nowadays is like 3, 4, or maybe 5 years. All these guys should last that.

Faneca, Jenkins and Richardson have all been in the league playing every down longer that Pennington has and he sat on the bench for three years. Maybe Woody too, I'm not sure when he was drafted. I doubt any of them will be playing 3,4 or 5 years from now. Even if they are they won't be playing for us. Those are the years when the big money of these contracts will kick in and we will have no choice but to cut them because we certainly won't be able to pay them.

Faneca, yes. Richardson, yes. Jenkins, no.

The guy has only been in the league for 5 or so years, and has basically sat out two entire seasons with injuries. So no, hasn't been in the league playing every down longer than Chad. Some actually argue that his injuries may contribute to his longevity in the league, as he has much less wear-and-tear on his body.
And offensive lineman have notoriously long careers, so Faneca still has pretty much a garaunteed 3-4 years left of good play.
And Richardson is old, probably beat up a bit too much, but the guy signed a short-term contract, it's onvious that we just brought him in here to get our running game back on track for this season. odds are he won't be around long.

    Exactamundo, Kimosabe.

And when it comes to reading this board, the posters who have acknowledged the good of 06 and the bad of 07 have the most credibilty, imo.

The posters who failed and refused to criticize any of the mistakes that were made in 07, and just want to make excuses and blame everyone and everything else other than the two guys in charge of football operations are deceiving themselves, and mindlessly trying to blow smoke up people's ass.

That doesnt buy cred, although I can just hear them next year if the Jets are doing well, with their "where are all the naysayers now?" bullshit.

When I see good things happen it makes me happy, when I see bad things happen it makes me angry.

They really need to speculate as to the reason??? 4-12 should be explanatory enough.

So...being a flip flopper based on the "what have you done for me lately" mentality buys credibility here?

Sounds bullshitty to me. But maybe thats me and my smoke blowing brain at work as usual.

What you guys sounded like during the 4-12 seasons was a bunch of spoiled, impatient babies who magically forgot everything good because we hit a rough spot. Not the objective, pro-active thinkers you're trying to portray yourself as in this post.

Like I said before...you guys would have been calling for the heads of idiots like Chuck Noll and Bill Walsh after disastrous starts to their coaching careers.

Theres no quality analysis on what the Jets are doing anywhere. The majority of our core group of players (Cotchery, Washington, Mangold, Clemens, Rhodes, Revis, Harris) were all acquired via the draft and are all young. We have a general manager who understands the importance of building through the draft. We have two high draft picks in this April's draft and theres every reason to believe that Tannenbaum will take care of business. We acquired big time talent this offseason (ProBowl players and a player with ProBowl Ability- Pace).

Our team is in great shape for 08 and beyond. All the stuff being written is garbage. People have no clue whats going on with the Jets.

And the idea that Tannenbaum's and Mangini's future with this team depends on the resluts of 08 is nonsense- Woody understands the potential greatness of this duo and they will be here for the long haul. When it's all said and done, Mangini and Tannenbaum will be rememered as the greatest GM/coach tandem in franchise history.

And Im really tired of reading all the garbage that the dopey sportswriters put out (Cannizaro, Cimini, the bald clown from Newsday, and especially Yasinkas from ESPN).
