Coming up on NFL network in a few minutes they are going to break down Vernon Gholston and what this 266 pound freak can add to our defense.
Quiet guy, simple yet smart, says all the right things. Not big on practice, but what player is. He loves to play in games, big games especially. When asked what he's going to do on draft day- he said he'll spend it where he always does, laying in bed just waking up, said that the phone call might wake him... i find that very "college kid" like- which is perfectly human. Has a sense of humor. When put on film, typical analysis by Mayock... Motor is not as strong as Long's, yet his 1st step- he is off the line when everyone else is getting out of their stance.. You barely see that in the NFL. When he's blocked, he stays blocked.. Brian Cox will not stand for that, so IF he is drafted by us that will change. No film analysis on his coverage, which i don't like because i wanna see him drop into a zone or cover a TE, and see if how he looks.
You don't draft Gholston to cover TEs. You draft him to get the QB, which is something this team sorely needs. The Giants showed the importance of a pass rush as opposed to a star running back. The star running back retired and they went with average backs and RB by committee, but won a championship by putting the other team's QB on his back.
I know that, thats the reason I badly want him here. I still would guess he will be droping into coverage every once and awhile as a pro LB in the 3-4.
Do you think we are going to get any news on his performance in his private workout with us and the fins?
Just as a heads up I have a friend who is a big Ohio State fan and he said he saw a lot of double teams this year, because their DTs were freshmen. I think this may have worn him out which could be the whole motor issue. Personally I hate when analysts talk about motors. Mario Williams had questions of motor and consistency, but he is looking better than Reggie Bush right now.
This will be the case with most college players projected to be 3-4 OLB's. There aren't many 3-4 college defenses. You have to look at what kind of athlete they are and make a judgment on whether or not you think they will be able to drop into coverage. I know I'm stating the obvious, but I feel like it needs to be said.
while thats true, in a 3-4 defense, what makes the pass rush work is not knowing where the pressure is coming from. if you know he's comin at you every down, he's easier to defend. but if he's versatile and drops back now and then, he becomes unpredictable, and the qb is always worrying where the hell he is. you can't just be a one-trick pony in the nfl.
Exactly. Totally agree. I think as long as Gholston can drop into a zone and cover a small portion of the field at bare minimum, he will be very successful. I don't think he will be asked to cover man to man on anyone but the less athletic TEs.
That never seemed to stop LT. If you're a good pass-rusher, then you're a good pass-rusher. I want someone that even though they know you're coming, it doesn't matter because you'll just kick their ass anyway.
LT was a freak and a half who's athleticism was off the charts... Gholston and Long aren't as athletic as LT was. Its tough to compare anyone to him because he was so unique.
A slightly bigger, and more athletic(but slower) version of Shawne Merriman is likely the best comparision for Gholston...not LT.
..unfortunately, the book on Gholston says when he's blocked he stays blocked!! SO, what we would end up with is an ineffective pass rusher who spends a third of his time on the sidelines because he DOES not have the linebacker skills needed to cover pass catchers. Or, an ineffective pass rusher who when he is on the field will be double teamed and blocked. His monstre combine performance based on Mayocks opinion, also shows that he does not HAVE the skills needed right now to play OLB in a 3 -4 defense. All that said, I definitely don't want Mcfadden either.
He is projected to be a OLB and not a DE in the NFL so of course he has to be able to cover tight ends and people like Welker in NE. Otherwise he is useless.
I was really only comparing the fact that LT blitzed on just about every play. He didn't drop back into coverage that much. That's what I mean with Gholston. Send him from all over the line on stunts, from the weakside, from the strongside, wherever.
Half that post doesn't even make sense.... "His monstre combine performance based on Mayocks opinion, also shows that he does not HAVE the skills..."....is that even a sentence? What even made sense there?
