Comparison for you Pace vs..

Discussion in 'New York Jets' started by KyleJetfan, Mar 5, 2008.

  1. I love the idea of Woody competing at guard. no doubt he'd beat out Moore and could ancchor the running game. But at Tackle i see potential problems..

Hopefully Bender continues to develop and perhaps we address the RT position early in the draft.

Also note that Pace sat an entire season with a lacerated arm and has only been playing for five seasons. Most players don't start to make an impact till their 2nd or 3rd year.

Pace put up some good numbers on a pretty shitty defense. Good pickup in my opinion , Guys a beast and a 3-4 OLB at 6'4 272 thats Merriman Size. Thomas is good but he played on a much better D and is already 30.

I don't think Thomas disappointed the Pats at all. He also deflected 8 passes and his 1 INT was returned for a TD.

Again...LB's in the BB/Parcells D are asked to play like LBs. That means your job is to do more than just rack up sacks to please the fans.

Yep, i am not expecting bender to step into the starting spot this year. if he does, great. But he is obviously a project, and that will take time.

You have to remember, Thomas played MLB until Colvin went down. You generally don't pick up that many sacks playing the MLB position. You are, however posed to, pick up a lot of tackles.

Watching Pats games you neber even knew Thomas on the field, he made very little impact. They aren't going to say they were disappointed but I guarantee you they were for all they paid him and for all the hype.

He played the Jets and Phins twice.
That right there should shoot a hole in your theory.

I've stated this in other threads but it actually belongs here.

Adam Schein was on SNY absolutely raving about the Pace signing, saying things like, "Perfect fit for the Jets, he'll be borderline probowl every year, most underated aquisition the Jets have made so far," etc., etc...

He even used words like, "Mark my words...".. was really high on us getting Pace.

That was the point I was going to make, which is why I wanted to know if KJF was comparing a 3-4 ILB to a 3-4 OLB.

They were both OLB's Thomas ROLB, and Pace played OLB when they switched from 4-3 to 3-4

First of all Arizona's defense was not "shitty". They were middle of the pack mainly because of their secondary and sub-par running attack on offense. Their front 7 with or without Pace is pretty good; they hold well against the run and can get to the QB. Second the only thing "beast" about Pace is his size. We really shouldn't be comparing him against Thomas considering they played different positions in the 3-4 last year. He played OLB and Thomas played ILB.

I'm not a stat hound but you can add 6 passes defended to that INT per this article:

    http://www.kansascity.com/491/story/515198.html

If I have time I'll confirm the PD stat with an official source but I am going out right now.

I would say he is comparable to Terrell Suggs.

    2007 stats: (Suggs/Pace)

    Games: 16/16
    Tackles: 78/98
    Sacks: 5/6.5
    Interceptions: 0/1
    Forced Fumbles: 1/1

Wow, the more I think about it the more I like this signing.

This may sound crazy but this signing may be the best out of all of them.

Now the one caveat is that he actually continues his upward trend in the 3-4.

I am saying this because out of all the FA's the ones that usually work out are the young players that are just coming into their own and are signed for a reasonable amount. Using past Jet players Mawae is a perfect example. He was 27 and an up and coming player when Parcells signed him.

Now I realize that Pace got a barrell full of money and his in most eyes was not a reasonable amount as I sited above. Consider that he is getting just a little bit more from the Jets then he would have got from his next biggest suitor (Parcells). Normally I do not put much credence into who is after who in FA. However in the last 15-20 years the best Jet FA pick ups were Parcells pick ups. I think that goes a long way in telling us the potential of Pace.

If he lives up to that potential his contract will look quite cheap. Big ifs to be sure but he is a round peg in a round hole as Mangini's defense is a perfect fit for his skill set.
