OK, Mike Tannenbaum knows that there is a draft in a month. He didn't forget. The injuries during the year thing? If our front office was willing to scramble to fill vacancies, wouldn't we have signed Kendall's replacement at some point last year? The emergency signing is something Super Bowl contenders do, not something a young team on the come-up needs to worry about.
I am not talking about signing big name guys during the season I am talking about emergency guys. Sometimes decent players are available and if you don't have enough cap room you can't sign them and then you are stuck. I know Tannenabum knows there's a draft next month, so do other GMs like Bill Parcells who got us into cap hell. these guys are fighting for the jobs, sometimes they'd don't look that far down the road and they go for it to keep their jobs. I like the moves, I think we overpaid on a couple of guys but they are talented guys and I can live w/ it but you guys have to understand there are potential negatives to some of these deals as well.
We did get a pick this year for Vilma. The Jets recieved a 4th round pick in 2008. And if Vilma reaches certain playing incentives AND signs an extension with NO, then the Jets get the Saints 2009 2nd or 3rd, in exchange for the Jets 4th.
if we did not make any big moves they would have complained about that too. Cant win with these folks.
That's always the way it is. If we win by a point we should have won by more. There are too many different ypes of fans w/ different opinions which is a good thing for the board. If we all just agreed it would be pretty boring.
The pace signing has just as much to do with keeping him away from a competitor as it does having him for ourselves. So what if we pay an extra 5M to keep him away from Quitcells – I’d rather do that than have him shove it up our asses for the next five years in a gay teal uniform.
There may not be a salary cap in 2010. Jerry Jones, and several other "big-market" owners have already announced to vote against it.
Well said.. Also... We are finally doing something with the money we have, yet, some are still complaining. It makes no sense.. Some cry when we dont sign any big names that can contribute to our cause, then some cry (usually the same people that cry about not signing anyone) when we actually get some quality guys to help our team win. It just makes no sense..
these grades are to harsh Folks I fall into the same mode as the rest of you as jets fans always waiting for the other shoe to drop. For once I need to change that attitude. These signings are an b+ across the board and possibly an A. We brought in need players, positions we needed to upgrade and we got arguable the best available players at these positions. With the cap increasing these contracts have to be looked at more like baseball (fantasy money) yes they seem like big deals but look around the league (jerry porter, thomas kelly, asante samuel) its a product of the systerm that is the NFL and that is these teams have more $$$$ to spend so spend it. These contracts do not inhibit us unless these guys fill the years oblgated. Somone won't of course but if they mostly do we are in great shape to improve drastically in 08. We are set up nice for the draft as are hand is not forced into a certain pick- we can take the guy we view the best available and please all be ready if McFadden is available we gonna hold Jerry Jones over a barrel and get I believe there 2 # 1's this year and one next year. Anyone have a problem with adding mario manningham and Derrick Harvey? We can now also take a flyer on a QB like ainge, henne, flacco who I think all have the potential to be better pros then there college days. Look forward to being on board here.
Faneca - A- Jenkins - B+ Vilma - C Pace - B- Woody - C- Overall grade = B. Adam Schein was on the TV the other day pounding the table over the Calvin Pace aquisition. He claims Pace is going to fit in excellently with our system and players and will be "borderline probowl."
Jenkins....A......Love this trade. Good value. I think this guy has an immediate impact on the D. Faneca.....A-.....Wanted Andrews, but still happy with Faneca. Quite a lot of money, but will upgrade D'Brick and Mangold also. Vilma.......B..... Being a Canes fan I love Vilma, but he just didn't fit. Was not going to resign with the Jets after 08. Was surprised the Jets got the value they got on this deal. Woody......B....I like this deal a lot better then most. I think he will be playing guard again next year. Which gives the Jets a lot of choices in the draft. If a good RT falls to #2, and I think there will be, the Jets OL will be awesome Pace.........D....A lot has been written on this. I just don't get it myself. Hope they see something I don't
If you really think Tannenbaum and Mangini aren't looking towards the future then you've been watching some other team the past 2 seasons... May I ask...since you seem like we're a lock to be put in cap hell...whats our cap number right now?
Fancea - A Our biggest weakness is addressed with one of the best ever to play the position Jenkins - B+ The former all-pro is a great fit for NT postion, but health and weight issues are a concern Pace - B- Nothing wrong with adding a good pass rushing OLB for the 3-4, but was he really worth all that money? Woody - B- Seemed to play well at RT last year where he will be this year, but not a long term answer at the position Overall: B+ The Jets finally shell out some dough to get great players in positions of need. With a solid draft, the Jets should be competing for the playoffs again in 08.
