The way Tangini operates is we position ourselves to be as flexible as possible. We now have a solid o-line, a decent defensive front 7, decent, if unspectacular skill position players and a couple stop-gap type players in the secondary. I really don't think we should be taking skill-position guys because we seriously need depth. The best teams have depth to contain the injuries. We need to become one of those teams. We have depth at RB/QB/WR, even if our starters aren't spectacular pro-bowlers. What we need is depth at OL/DL/LB. Imagine what would happen if Mangold is injured? Woody could move over to C, but then we have a gaping hole at RT. Likewise, what happens if Harris gets injured? Maybe we slide in Pace, but then we have a hole at OLB. That's why drafting Gholston or Long or even Clady isn't a bad idea. They can sit for a year and learn the system. It's not easy for a rookie, even a very talented one, to just step right in. We need depth and that's why we're not going to take a skill position player.
I still don't want anything to do with Mcfadden. He's not going to be an every down back in the NFL. His legs are too small to take the pounding. I think he could be a great specialized weapon but it's not what we need.
Merling might be able to be a 3-4 end, but he's not as good as a guy like Long, so I wouldn't want to take him that high.
Pace wasn't signed to be the edge rusher. We have signed Pace to play the position that the Cowboy's strong side OLB, Greg Ellis plays. He plays OPPOSITE of their edge rusher, Demarcus Ware. We are STILL looking to fill the edge rush position and we will STILL try to draft Gholston or perhaps Groves in the 2nd. If for whatever reason that doesn't happen, we have Bryan Thomas to play there.
Someone wrote an interesting write up on him in another thread, He played in the SEC and tore thru there Defenses when they all knew Arkansas was running cause they can not pass for shit. He initiated the contact and deliver the blow when he runs the ball, watch some highlites. I think its him in the draft, malcom kelly, sweed, mckelvin, or DRC
trade down pick up an extra second and take Kenny Phillips or DRC in the first Take Carl Nicks and A 3-4 end in the second.
Forget McFadden, we know Mangini as a coach-- how the hell are we going to take this guy as our RB? Not to mention the money it will take and the money tied up in TJ.... Defense is still the pick because we have a defensive coach. Gholston, Ellis, Merling are the 3 I heard about.
We still need to draft a QB, as Clemens has shown nothing and Chad is not physically capable at this point to be the man. This has to be priority #1.
Or, He could be our best QB -.-. In the Razorbacks "Wild Hog Formation" which they used a lot! McFadden played QB and he was not horrible. If I'm not mistaken. He was a QB in High School. I'm still not pleased with TJ or LW.
Thats because you've never seen them behind a talented Jets O-line... I hope your opinion changes after this season.

I've never been a McFadden fan and while I think he is a damn good prospect, he's not an LT or AD. I actually like Mendenhall more, and Jonathan Stewart was one of my 5 favorite college players too.
As time goes by I'm starting to think that NFL guys don't love Gholston as much as the guys here do. I heard a few guys say that he disappeared in a few games(National Championship?) and workout warrior isn't a complement anymore.
Add 10 pounds to Merling's frame and he would be a solid 3-4 DE. He played DT in college and he great against the run. I see him all over the place on some Mock drafts but I could easily see the Jets trading down a few spots and grabbing him, or maybe even taking him at #6 to be honest. With Ellis only having a year or two left in the tank I think this would be a great pick up. Lets face it guys we arent taking DMF because of his character concerns, and we arent going to pay Gholston top 10 money with the investments we've made in BT and Pace. I can see McKelvin being taken, but would we pick a CB in round 1 two years in a row? not sure. I'm big on this kid from clemson. He is not a 3-4 OLB at all, but add 10 pounds or so and he is a legit 3-4 END. Hes a mangini type of a player as well. hard working, team leader. He also went to a military prep school so we know he is disciplined and a smart kid.
we have to take gholston for 2 reasons 1 we're good at rb and 2 if we don't the pats do and we have to see him 2 times a year.we don't want that
