Yup. Really smart.. or really stupid. As a Jet fan, I'm just happy the Jets front office is showing some balls. New England has taken a step back, Buffalo and Miami don't wow me, there's no reason that this team can't bring in a collection of talent that can help us get in the playoffs. I have faith in Mangini and Tannenbaum that they will bring the right people in here, and if not, they're fired.
"too focused on the pass-rushing"? What else are we to focus on? It's not like we started this off-season or even last off-season quite frankly concerned about our OLBs in coverage. Look I like Pace a lot but "great against the run and fantastic in coverage" and "top 10 OLB" he is not.
I agree somewhat, the adjectives 10penn10 used were a bit strong for a guy with one good year under his belt. He made him sound like a perennial PBer
Yeah because the $20 million the Phins offered was SO much less than the $22million the Jets offered. If he signed with the Phins it would have been a great signing right?
Yeah now that the Phins lost out to the Jets for him, if the Phins signed him I'm guessing he would have been a steal and one of the best young up & comers in the game? BTW, aren't you tired of losing to the Jets? now the Phins are losing to the Jets in the offseason too..
I never said he wasn't a solid addition. I think he's a good player who will be an upgrade for the Jets, but at the price, he hasn't earned it in my opinion....
That's still too much in my opinion. This guy, although a decent player, isn't worth that kind of money. We did the same with Porter last year, and gave him way too much.... He was a very solid signing for the Jets in my opinion, just overpriced that's all....
No, he would have been what he is right now, overpriced. He's a solid football player still, just not worth the signing bonus in my opinion.... Congrats, I think the Jets had one, if not the best FA period. You certainly upgraded....
Bltzkreig out here showing some love for the Jets. what gives? you're a closet Jets fan aren't you? forget those loser Dolphins come over to the darkside, not only do we have cookies, but we have a better defense than you! and more overpaid Fa's than anyone in the league! Not to say I dont think Pace will upgrade us, I just think we paid about 13-15 million too much, and maybe 7-8 to much garunteed.
I was just busting chops, I agree with you about the money but dont really care as he is definetely an upgrade. I do agree that the Jets had a great offseason so far but as we both know it means absolutely nothing if it doesn't translate to wins.. I think the Phins have had a good offseason too.. Both the Jets and Phins have improved since FA started but for both of them it will mean nothing if the QB play doesn't improve.
I agree that he is very overpriced...w/ that said...I do think he is a solid player and will improve the defense overall.
Very ?????? I guess Statsjeff is the only Math guy on the board. 6 year deal. 20 Mil SB. 26 Mil in first three years. thats 3.666666 (Pro rata SB) + 1 Mil each of first two years, 2mil year 3. If you count the always present balloon salary in the last year(8Mil (thats a guesstimate) THe player has cap numbers like this Bonus Salary cap hit 3666666.667 1000000 4666666.667 3666666.667 1000000 4666666.667 4000000 3666666.667 2000000 5666666.667 22000000 3666666.667 3250000 6916666.667 26000000 3666666.667 4250000 7916666.667 3666666.667 8500000 12166666.67 Once you get to the last year, you will have moved the 6th year signing bonus into unused cap space, negating the sixth year.
According to Cimini we paid Pace $12.5 mil guaranteed not 22. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2008/03/breaking-down-the-big-four-dea.html
Cimini is right if 9 million of the bonus is a roster bonus in 2009. That's definitely not guaranteed money, since if Pace breaks his leg this year he won't see a dime of it. It's still a ton of cash to lay out for a player who really doesn't seem like star-caliber guy, not even one in the making.
Even better contract. He was a guy who was one of the best OLBs last year, he'll only get better here.
