I thought Jerry Reese was an idiot when he came in as Giants GM, traded Luke Petitgout, claimed that "the left tackle position is overrated" and bumped David Diehl out to the flank. "Bill Walsh, moron," I thought. "4 and 12, mark my words." Turns out the Giants did OK last year. It seems that having a guard at tackle gave the Giants a little more "oomph" in their run blocking. The Giants running-back-by-committee functioned well all year, letting Eli Manning develop into one of the most effective play action passers in the league. So now that we just picked up two guards with three Super Bowl rings between them, one of whom contributed to a morbidly obese man becoming the fifth all time leading rusher and the other playing at tackle a la Diehl, are we going to follow the Giants' lead? Should Brian Schottenheimer water down his pass happy offense and set up a grind-it-out, kill-the-clock playbook? If so, how will this affect our running back situation? I'm pretty sure the Giants felt they were in such good shape at RB that they dumped Ryan Grant. Are we that confident in our two man depth? Do we sign? Do we trade? Do we draft? I wouldn't be surprised to see substantially more Brad Smith options this year, either.
This is why it's starting to make sense to take McFadden with the #6 pick and a big, fast WR, like James Hardy, Devin Thomas or Adarius Bowman, with the #36 pick.
We're scheduled to meet with Jessie Chatman on Wednesday, so he's an alternative to drafting running back early. I just wish quarterback position was solid. We have a nice blend of veteran and young talent. We added two guys along the line with rings and another in Thomas Jones who played in the big game. We need to sure up wide receiver or an overall game-breaker to go with lunch pale receivers like Cotch and Coles. But I'm so pleased with our team with these additions as opposed to the end of 2007 season or at this point last year.
Adarius Bowman would be a wasted pick at 36. I'd be happiest with James Hardy, but Devin Thomas looks like he's going to be a big-time player in this league. Thomas reminds me of Anquan Boldin: Big, fast, and strong.
i think if gholston and mcfadden are at #6, mcfadden will get taken simply because he could be so sick behind this o-line and with jones complimenting him.
I like the OL pickups. What's not to like? Woody and Faneca will help the younger lineman develop, including bender if he is really the goods, and will also push each other as vets who cant get too lax just because they already have a ring. I dont think we'll take mcfadden, but i expect that another RB will be added somewhere along the line.
They have to take McFadden if he's available now. The problem is what to do with Jones and the cap hit he will cause if he's traded. The only other realistic option I see is to trade up with Parcells and get Chris Long. With what they have done in FA there isn't anybody else but those two in the top 6 that they can use.
Never. If we do, NE takes him and we live another 10 years in their shadow. Like I said we HAVE to take him if he's there at #6.
Dallas just signed their RB to a long term contract, didn't they? It would cost them a fortune to trade him now. Even more then it will cost us to trade Jones. Besides, I think Oakland will take him at 4 anyway so it's will be a moot point.
i dont want to waste the money for a running back that we dont really need an upgrade for. running backs are not a hard position to fill....and we have thomas jones who broke 1000 yards for the past 3 yrs. on our terrible line he had 11oo yards. no with a descent line he should be around 1400 yards. lets upgrade wr.....not rb....we dont need it.
My feeling is that there is too much running back depth in this year's draft to take McFadden with the number six pick. Rashard Mendenhall is arguably better than McFadden (not in my opinion, but I've heard the argument) Ray Rice will last a while, Mike Hart might be available in the fifth round, Chris Johnson (I think his name is Chris) just broke a sub-4.3 40. And I'd love to start a new prototype position, "the scat fullback," with Jacob Hester. We can find a decent back in the second day. However, with the scratch Woody just dropped on the offensive line, and with the new stadium opening in 2010, I think our owner might want a superstar. Someone to sell jerseys, somebody to fill seats, somebody to put the New York Jets back on the national radar. Of course, it wouldn't just be a strictly business decision- nothing helps a young quarterback develop like a dominant running game. Frankly, I'm not in favor of drafting McFadden. I feel we have more pressing needs. But it wouldn't exactly bring me to tears, ya know? :jets:
I would draft McFadden although I understand your point. Frankly, I want either Long, Gholston, and McFadden. There's a chance one of those three will be available for us. With all the money they've spent, it would not shock me if they traded down. I agree about your Superstar belief. This team doesn't have that "star" that gets the fairweather fan to say "Wow, I'm gonna be a Jet fan" If he's there, I'd be clamoring for him, but if he isn't.. I certainly won't cry.
So we're in agreement: nobody cries on draft day. "And with the sixth pick in the 2008 NFL draft, the New York Jets select... Colt Brennan, Hawaii."
On a side note- what was the name of that crazy offense they ran at Arkansas with McFadden at quarterback? I could see the innovative Schottenheimer, armed with Smith, McFadden and Washington (and Hester!), DROOLING at the possibility of revolutionizing the NFL option game. It was some kind of modified wishbone, right?
 Let's not go there. I think they have to take McFadden at 6 unless one of the Longs falls, in which case I'd pick them at DE or OT. I could live with trading down for more picks, but I'd want more than the Cowboys two picks both of which are late in the 1st round. If they could trade down just 3-6spots or so and also pick up a 2nd round pick, that might be worth considering (take the top WR or CB) and stack up on depth with two 2nds (or package one of the 2nds and a 4th to move into the late 1st round). Although they have spent a ton of money this week, they no longer have to draft for a specific need, which gives Tangini lots of flexibility for the draft. Mike
I've pretty much resigned myself to saying "Chris Long sucks, we don't want him. Overrated. Let somebody else draft him, we don't want him." But if we really did put together a package to steal Long, I GUARANTEE you I will cry like a Jewish mother at her only son's wedding.
