I too would like to know when Calvin became the reincarnation of L. Taylor. His name was about as common as Thomas Jones rushing TD's
thank god. we kinda overpaid, but Tanny is a cap wizard so we're good. Now if RunDMC is available at 6, we can trade down, take Mendenhall, and draft Quentin Groves w/ our 2nd. That way we can fill our OLB spot, and get a young RB with MAJOR potential
http://forums.azcardinals.com/showthread.php?t=29573 Cardinals fans seem to think the Jets overpaid. I don't like hearing that. Some say it is the worst signing of the Free Agent Period! hmy: Some say he will be missed though and is a solid player. Comparing him to the Adalius Thomas and Briggs deals is interesting though. And look at this thread: http://forums.azcardinals.com/showthread.php?t=29350 It basically starts with them debating if Pace can be a starter on their team in 08. hmy:
I see way too many people worried about this guys name recognition here. You know what the Jets are thinking when they signed him? Not ZOMG fans don't know his name and he's only had one good season. Many sources talked about 3-4 teams really going hard after Pace, and it's for a reason. He played in a 3-4, he was successful in a 3-4, and if you look at Mangini's coaching roots those guys (BB and Parcells) value the system more than the individual players. You're looking at what a guy CAN do and what made him succesful, not WTF his name is and what he did or didn't do when he was asked to do something completely different (hands down in the 4-3). Its why the Bryan Thomas bashing is lame, and it's why the Pace bashing can be just as lame. I mean who the hell was Adalius Thomas before '04? Knowing what a guy can do, using him in as many ways as he can be used, and making sure he has the intelligence and versatility to handle what will be asked of him is what matters more than anything else. The contract...yea thats alot of money but Pace getting 20 million from *someone* has been rumored since FA started. It's the way of FA contracts with all this money teams have to spend. It sucks, but obviously not anywhere near as much as people are making it out to be.
Good post Dware... I like the signing and I'm really not worried about the cap problem with Mike T. at the helm. Let's just wait and see if he booms or busts to evaluate the signing. YOU HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY! WHO ELSE IS GOING TO FILL THE POSITION?
Am I the only one paranoid enough to wonder if Bill Parcells lured us into thinking some turd was the be all and end all of 3-4 backers, then drove up the price on him and screwed us?
Omg That Is Alot Of Money For A Player With One Good Year Under Him Screw It Though I Complain When They Dont Spend So I Better Shut Up Now I Hope He Is A Good Player
Probably not, because people said the same thing about Coleman. I'm not saying it's not a possibility, or even highly unlikely, but I'm hoping Mangini's a big boy and can form his own opinions too.
I think people are too focused on the pass-rushing. The guy is great against the run and fantastic in coverage. When Arizona went into nickle and dime defense, he was the guy who stayed on as a MLB. He's a good pass-rusher in this defense, but he's a tremendous all-around player. Cakes is right, he probably was a top 10 OLB last year.
I don't think Tuna would do that to Mangini and Tannenbaum either- they're on really good terms. Sure they're in the same division, but I don't think Tuna would do that in this context. Hell, he's strongly recommended players for the Jets to sign in the past. He has better ways to stick it to the Jets if he wants. I think his interest in Pace was genuine.
With only one season under his belt, it seems a lot but that season was with a switch to the 3-4 so I'm keeping my faith in Tangini!
Good post Pace had a solid season doing what he's going to do here, namely be an OLB. I could care less that he was an average DE because we won't use him in that role. He showed great abilities as a LB and that's all that matters. Though he's not a sexy name, he could easily have just as large an impact on our D as Adalius Thomas would have had last year. He also had 98 tackles last year as an OLB which is phenomenal. This shows me that he can take on the big O-lineman and still shed those blocks and make plays. He'll help all facets of the defense. Let me add the obligatory intelligence plug too- the guy went to Wake which is not an easy school academically. From all accounts, he's a hard worker and a guy who will play the game the way Mangini wants it done.
Exactly. We want our guys to be LBers. Having pass rush ability is just part of what this coaching staff/this D wants in their OLBs. In the ideal situation, everyone in the front 7 is big and can do everything well. Think the Pats, Ravens, and Steelers. This is a defense that uses big, versatile players to disguise their blitzes and coverages and requires more than one specific skill from every player. Nowadays it's not enough to have a good pass rusher, but you also have to be able to make them guess where that rush is coming from.
Just like the Giants with two pass rushing DE and a great first step guy in the middle. The Pats have recomitted to the deep passing game, we need to be able to pressure the QB.
I look at this signing as risky and my least favorite move so far of the season, but...........He is a major upgrade from Barton. He LIKES dropping into coverage and WANTED to play in a 3-4. We gave him about 4 million too much, not the end of the world because his salary actually replaces Barton's and Vilma's, especially if we had to resign both( who didn't fit).
He was willing to pay Pace $20 mil guaranteed so that was a heck of a gamble if he was trying to drive up the price for us.
