First of all it should be...

TOO old... not to old... Grammar 1

Second, Guards play well into their late 30's and he's only 31, so with a 5 year deal we'll get him for the rest of his career at Pro Bowl ability.

Yet Kendall was not nearly as good as Faneca. Amazing how talent can effect perspective.

Totally disagree. Kendall was/is still solid.
Amazing how the whole line fell apart after he left. (Fact not opinion)

How can you even compare the 2 talent wise. How many Pro-bowls has Kendall went to?

Talent wise they are not even close. Faneca can both pass block and run block Kendall was only decent at one.

Oh sorry TOO old. I guess no one understood the post until you corrected that. Maybe the keyboard stuck I didn't know we were in English class. YOu know I don't know your age or what you do for a living but i been outta school for 10 years and I noticed as I get older I find myself forgetting how to spell some words and my grammar slipping. Some on this board are still in high school or in College so your brain is fresh on this. It seems like some people are so quick to be a wise ass or be sarcastic. You didn't have to put grammer 1. There is a lot more in life to remember than when to use too or to.

Kendall is nearly 4 years older. There's a major difference between 31 and 35.

And of course, the fact that Faneca is much better.

Good guards are long-lived, by NFL standards. Age 31 is not old for guys who care about their performance. If they are just picking up a paycheck, then sure, 31 is old.

He was too expensive. Would you rather pay for pro bowl talent or overpay for average?

    IMO, he is too old.

As a Steeler fan, I want to congratulate you on signing Alan Faneca. "Red" wanted to get paid and he did and I am happy he did, because the Steelers were not going to do it.

Faneca is still a very good guard, but he is not the best in the NFL anymore. He is not that dominant guy he once was. He is still pretty good, but not the same player we saw 3 years ago. Against the Cards, he was pushed all over the field and that is something that never happened to him. He gave up three sacks that game. IMO, age is starting to catch him. He is still pretty dominant run blocking. He is smart. He works well with the guys around him. He is pretty damn good pass blocking, but he can be bull rushed. We had a weak center beside him and he often handed guys to Mahan and Mahan was not there.....so we saw open runners at Ben.

Faneca was probably the best lineman on an average NFL line. We gave up 47 sacks last season and Ben saved quite a few more. I hope he works out for you, but I am glad he did not get $8M per season from us.

Exactly, the men on the line can play alot longer than say an RB, where 30 is considered the downside.

    Thanks for the insight.
Unfortunately here it will fall on deaf ears because people see this as us signing the best guard in the NFL.

I agree with your assessment but I haven't seen him as much as you have.
We needed an upgrade there badly especially after our mistake in letting Kendall go.
I'd rather have Faneca here than the turnstyle projects of last year so I'm not one to say otherwise.

Thanks for the assessment. I haven't seen him play enough to know exactly what he brings to the Jets offense, but I get the feeling that if I were a Steelers fan I'd probably be right there with you about letting him go. 8 million is a lotta dough. If we weren't totally desperate at this point it might not have been the best move.
