First, I meant to name this thread "PinPoint's Mock Rest-of-the-Offseason, but I hit enter by mistake I don't know how to change a thread title. Anyway, here's my plan:

Im going to knock on wood here and assume Faneca is signed. Here's what I would do the rest of the offseason:

    Signings

    OLB Calvin Pace
    OT Shane Olivea
    WR Javon Walker
    TE Ben Troupe

I really hope we can land Pace, I think he'd be great as a 3-4 pass rusher. He had 6.5 sacks playing OLB in a 4-3, and was a good tackler with close to a 100. I think he'd be a great fit in a 3-4 and hope Tangini can convince him that that's the system in which his talents could be best utilized. Oliveas a very solid OT, even though he struggled last year he was a stud in 06 and I think he can return to that form. He's from NY, and I think he'd be cheaper than Woody. Walker I think could be a steal, he'd be a great #3 even though he's injury prone. I'd love Berrian, but he'll probably be too expensive, but Walker would be a nice add too. Finally, Troupe is a solid pass catching TE who provides depth.

    Trade

Dewayne Robertson to the Broncos for CB Dre Bly

Broncos need a DT badly, Jets need a CB to play opposite Revis. I think this trade makes a lot of sense for both teams. Bly is only 30 and had 5 INTs last year--he'd be an outstanding #2 next to Revis. It also clears cap room so we can sign all the guys listed above. I like D-Rob and think he can be good at end, but if we clearing his salary can go along way towards fixing other holes.

    Draft

    1) Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
    2) Pat Simms, DT, Auburn
    4a) Eric Stultz, FS, LSU
    4b) Owen Schmidt, FB, WVU
    5) OLB (need more depth)
    6) LG (depth)
    7) QB (3rd string)

I know a lot of people are anti-McFadden, but nobody can deny his once-in-a-lifetime talent, the fact that Thomas Jones is pretty old in RB years, and Leon Washington is not an every down back. I like Jones a lot now, but after next season when he's 30 there's a good chance we're going to be in dire need of a RB everybody is going to be wishing we drafted D-Mac. This is the year to get a RB--we may not have a chance for the next 10 years to get one with McFadden's potential. Yes, it cuts into Leon's carries, but I'm fine with him just being brought in once or twice a drive to be utilized for screen-type plays or 3rd-and-longs--it's not like he's great when given hand-offs anyway. Simms replaces D-Rob and would be a nice fit as a 3-4 end. Stultz I believe is a better player than Smith so they can slide into the FS starting spot immediately, and Schmidt is the best FB in the draft. I'm not great with late round prospects, so you draft experts can fill in the rest of the names at the positions I listed.

    Depth Chart

    QB: Clemens/Pennington/R7
    RB: McFadden/Jones/Washington
    FB: Scmidtt/Kowalewski
    WR: Coles/Cotchery/Walker/Smith/Stuckey/Wright
    TE: Baker/Troupe/Pociask
    LT: Ferguson/Bender
    LG: Faneca/Montgomery
    C: Mangold/W.Smith
    RG: Moore/R6
    RT: Olivea/Clement

    LE: Ellis/DeVito
    NT: Jenkins/Pouha/Moseley
    RE: Simms/Coleman

    LOLB: Pace/Bowens
    MLB: Harris/Barton/Kassel
    ROLB: B.Thomas/Chatham/R5

    CB: Revis/Bly/Poteat/Miller/Barrett
    FS: Stultz/Elam
    SS: Rhodes/Smith

I think this team would be much improved from last season, very exiting to watch, and playoff-caliber. Thoughts?

Dre Bly is horrible, I don't want him on this team.Id rather keep Robertson and his high cap number or trade him for a 3 this year and a 3 next year. Also we do not have a 5th rounder, we traded a 3 and a 5 to Carolina for Jenkins.Of all the free agents you mention, the only one that has a chance of happening is Olivea.

Why doesn't Pace have a chance of signing with us, considering he's meeting with us today? Or Troupe or Walker, who we've been rumored to be interested in?

    And Dre Bly isn't horrible...

You're right about the 5th rounder though.

Way way to early for Schmitt. I'm am for drafting a FB but he is maybe the 4rd - 4th best FB on the list and it is rare for a FB to go that high. 4th round we should eb able to get Hester or Hillis who are 10x better football players.

Hester and Hills are VERYYY different from Schmidtt as far as FBs are concerned. They are absolutely not better football players, they are just different. If you had watched Owen Schmidtt play you would know that there isn't a better blocking FB in this draft class and that is what the Jets need. I dont want another RB on the depth chart....I want a FB who can block for Jones and Washington and OS is just that.

As for Value....I'd be surprised...actually shocked if OS is there in the 6th round where we would next be picking. He would do wonders for our running game as a whole and the presence he brings with him is exactly what Mangini wants in the Locker room.

I'd be thrilled if we got him in the fourth round to be honest.

    4rd #1- Adrian Arrington
    4rd #2- Owen Schmidtt

Well Pace seems to have a contract in place with Miami, I think he is just paying us a visit to do the free agent rounds. The rest have not even set up visits wih us.I will be shocked if we sign Pace.I believe almost everyone is interested in Walker, that certainly doesnt make us favorites.Didnt Troupe have a vist set up with the Bills?Bly will certainly not come cheap. At this point we are linked to almost every free agent.Even Randy Moss is being rumored to be on our list, which is BS.If we sign any other free agents, it may be Gay and Olivea, thats it I dont see us signing anyone else.D-Rob trade could also be a possibility.

I unfortunately got to watch a lot of WVU, having gone to college in Western VA for the last 4 years. Owen Schmitt is the best blocking full back in the draft but I never said he wasn't, I said the other two were better football players, notice the terminology, they aren't pure Fullbacks, they are more H-back or RB hybrids. They can do 10x more than Schmitt can do who's only real skill is knocking skulls. Hillis can go out for the pass very well and Hester can carry the rock as well as any runner in the draft.

Maybe the 6th is too late, but the 4th is too early in my opinion.

I didn't write that saying that Hills and Hester etc aren't very talented FBs. I just don't think they are better football players. They may have a more well rounded game, but that kind of excludes blocking. They are average to below average blockers because they are more concerned with speed than with sealing and edge for a runner.

I would just say that since we have a pound the rock back in Jones and a scat back in Washington I would prefer to have a pure blocking FB. Schmidtt has ball skills too...not great...but he isn't completely one dimensional. I would just prefer to have the skillset that he offers and I honestly think there will be a lot of interest in Schmidtt and we would be lucky to have him in the late 4th.

Honestly too...if he came here with his mentality he would be a fan favorite from day 1. Once people hear about his breaking face masks and injuring teammates from practicing too hard, he will be loved by this whole message board.
