Is Faneca really signed yet? I thought it wasn't going to be settled until Saturday.

    Don't wanna burst anyones bubble..

Alan Faneca's agent denies that his client as signed with the Jets.
"False report. It's a false report," agent Rick Smith said. ESPN's website reported earlier the two sides agreed to a four-year, $32 million contract. His agent told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette a decision will come Friday night. It could still be with the Jets, but the Rams and 49ers are in the mix. Feb. 29 - 6:40 pm et

I doubt this is true. His agent is saying it's a false report because the deal isn't finalized in my opinion; I am sure Faneca will be a Jet.

If/when this signing becomes official it will be a great signing!

This will happen. It's probably just details and red tape at this point. Faneca plus the addition of Callahan to the coaching staff is a huge step in the right direction for the offensive line.

ESPN says the deal is tentatively agreed too.

I'm going to stay optimistic at the moment and assume it's going through. It does feel a little bit like the Antoine Winfield situation, where the Jets got stiffed at the dinner table and wound up signing David Barrett instead, but I'm guessing we got our guy this time.

I like the signing alot actually, but still in the back of my head I see Bell being a beast for longer.

I've been pessimistic about Faneca before because of his performance the past 2 seasons. But 1. he's still in great shape, 2. G's last a while, and 3. he WAS unhappy and may not have played as well because of it.

Plus, he'll be playing between two very talented young lineman, and he should benefit from them just as much as they will benefit from him.

Looking at it logically, this situation has no similarity to the Winfield situation at all. Winfield was in NY ready to sign a contract, his wife got cold feet and he was on a plane heading to Minnesota never to return to NY.

This just sounds exactly as it has been reported throughout the day, they have reached an agreement & he will make his only visit to NY tomorrow to finalize it.

Until any of that changes this doesnt resemble the Winfield situation at all.

The thing that makes me nervous is that it does not work to the Jet's advantage at all to have this news come out before Faneca's signature is on the contract. It does work to Faneca's advantage because another team still has an opportunity to come in at the 11th hour and make a better offer.

All of that said, I'd be really surprised if we got jobbed like that.

Alan Faneca in Principal with Jets?

UPDATE: Looks like I broke the story that Michael Smith couldn?t. Mark this moment down in history. I was just too timid when I thought about questioning Michael Smith and his rugged handsomeness to really go with it.

Rock triangulates what I heard following, saying that Rick Smith said ESPN?s story is a ?false report.?

As an FYI, I sent a note to Faneca?s agency, and received a terse reply stating that nothing was imminent, three minutes before Michael Smith broke the story on ESPN.

My night out is a little later than anticipated, so here?s the update as far as ESPN?s Michael Smith knows:

The New York Jets and guard Alan Faneca have agreed in principle to a four-year, $32 million deal that includes roughly $23 million in guarantees, ESPN?s Michael Smith reports. Faneca is expected to travel to New York this weekend when the deal will be finalized.

So the size of the deal didn?t change, just the amount of the guarantees. As long as he?s healthy, Tannenbaum looks like a genius.

To use a baseball analogy, think of Faneca as an excellent hitting short stop, or catcher. Sure they might be paid to do other things, but if they can hit too, their value skyrockets. With Faneca, it?s the same thing, he?s excellent in run support and pass protection, and immediately makes the left side of the line worlds better. We had written months ago that if the Jets wanted to compete, they needed to get Brick some help, and we?re glad that they agree. The Browns were able to improve from one of the worst units in the league (31st) to best (6th) with the help of a better line, and a QB who could throw deep. The Jets now effectively have the core of both, but still need to tweak with the line at RT.
