Schefter Reports Jets Close on Faneca/other Jets updates Sirius NFL Radio 2 minute drill reported that the jets are close to a deal with Faneca that would pay 32 million over 4 years with close to 20 million guaranteed. He also said they are close on a deal with Jenkins and also with Vilma (which we already know). So, one report says Faneca will take his time and make visits, while another says the Jets are close (and no other teams were mentioned). What's the deal? They are talking about Jenkins right now.....they say Mangini needs to light a fire under him, and if he can, then Jenkins can extinguish anyone's attack up the middle.....they say that he is as good as they come when he wants to be. Let's hope he'll want to be. So, as far as they are saying on NFL Radio, it's a done deal....a 3 and a 5 for Jenkins. They are saying that the Lions may still make a move for D-Rob instead of paying Rogers. I wonder if we could get 1 or 2 picks back for him...
we can get a 3rd for DRob if we are paying a 3 and 5 for Jenkins. Mangini will light a fire under him, no one dogs it on this team.. they just dont play well.
From Hashmarks on espn.com by Matt Mosely and Mike Sando... "Unless something strange happens, the Jets will sign seven-time Pro Bowl left guard Alan Faneca in the next couple of days. Faneca, 31, was voted onto to the Steelers' 75th anniversary team and he's been one of the most consistent linemen in the league. He faded a bit last season, but he'll still command a signing bonus in the neighborhood of the $17 million that guard Leonard Davis received in Dallas last season. The Jets were also interested in Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, but it looks like the Eagles may have the inside track."
Did he really? I don;t like the soudns of that...if this means he is no longer at his absolute best, why would we pay him like he is? True enough though,m because the Steelers had O-line problems last season. Not that I don't want him...
Obviously he faded, Hartings left and was replaced by Mahan and the rest of the line went through inconsistencies with the departure of Grimm. Faneca's still one of the best guards in the game, and will be for the next 2-3 years atleast.
Athletes have off years. It happens. This guy isn't just going to go sour overnight, he is an exceptional LG... even at 80% he is still better than most of the other LGs in the NFL.
Yep, the Steelers line in general had an off year this past year, which no doubt attributed to that. I wouldn't worry.
Not to mention Corey Williams netted a 2nd round pick. DTs are currently worth anywhere from a 2-4 pick which could be great value for us.
Yea I know, the one thing biting at me about Faneca is the following: Didn't our crappy, non-existent pass rush put up like 5 sacks against the Steelers in our game last year? A couple were from Robertson right up the middle, I believe. That makes me a bit nervous
True, its more of Faneca not being happy at PIT and the entire line having problems. I'd compare it to Mangold fading a bit last season as well. Its the line not the player.
You also have to consider who our new OL coach is. He is going to upgrade Brick and Mangold and if you throw Faneca in the mix the 4 of them could lead to big things for our OL.
Faneca had a similar problem that Brick had last year. Starks struggled all year at LT..and when he went down it was just a mess..Teams stunted to the left side of the line.
Like I said above, the whole Steelers line was a bit up in the air for the majority of the season. Like was said above, Mangold looked very average after a stellar rookie campaign because of 2 of 5 spots on the line being occupied by turnstiles. One weak link in an offensive line will make everyone look weak.
Kurt you need to post on O-line related threads more often so that people will actually be able to see that some posters know what they are talking about and will maybe learn something.
The entire Steelers line sucked last year. They signed a center Sean Mahan who couldn't block anyone and like the Jets line it killed everyone else. An offensive line is only as good as it's weakest link. With that being said Faneca has not played at the same level for the last 2 or 3 years. Even on the superbowl team he wasn't great. He's still a heck of a player to build around and it will be a great signing. I still think we will regret not signing Jacob Bell.
He's not the pass protector he once was..but he's still the best athleticc guard in the NFL(hutchinson is more of a mauler) when it comes to run blocking...
Breaking: The New York Jets appear to have won the Alan Faneca sweepstakes. The former Steelers guard, who was also pursued by the Rams and 49ers, will reportedly ink a deal with New York worth $8 million per year. The 31-year-old Faneca figures huge in the Jets? plans to rebuild their offensive line. They are next expected to go after Lions tackle Damien Woody. (picture: Pittsburgh Sports Report)
