Kenyon Coleman had the most tackles in the NFL among DEs. He's the best DE in the NFL against the run.

Stats for DL in the 3-4, except maybe for sacks for the DEs, don't mean a whole lot.

I'm going to guess it's the extra 18lbs.

Remains to be seen.I hope we don't give up draft picks for him.As far as Robertsons stats being better than his, I dont know. All I know is that he is the prototypical 3-4 DT and Dewayne is not.Its looking like Vilma is gone to the Saints. At worst I hope its a 2nd rounder.

    This from ESPN:

The Saints are close to finishing a trade for Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Panthers defensive tackle Kris Jenkins is heading to the Jets for a third-and fifth-round pick

If this is true...Tangini should be fired & relieved of his duties.

    This better not be true.

A 3rd and a 5th? Hell no No way we should do this. The Panthers just violated us big time if this is true.I think Mangini and Co are smarter than this.We better be trading some picks to get that 3rd round pick.I am going to bed very angry.Mangini I SHIT ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!!!!!!!

Calm down dude, we still have Dewayne to earn some picks back. Plus one of those choices could be the conditional pick we got from the Saints.

We get one of the best DTs in the NFL, a guy who has great size and will command constant double teams in our 3-4, and people freak out because we gave up a 3rd and a 5th.

This forum is so awful, I love it.

Keeping Robertson wouldn't be the worst thing in the world at this point. If not for his contract I'd be totally against trading him and all for moving him to DE and spot DT duty.

It's not the 3rd, it's the 5th. Considering what it looks like we're getting for Vilma, there could be room for some criticism. Jenkins has been healthy for the past 2 seasons which is great. Vilma has missed a half season, but was also one of the best at his position when in a system that fit his abilities. I'm still not sold on a conditional 09's for Vilma. The injury must be worse then I thought.

What are the odds a 5th round pick becomes a better player than Kris Jenkins?

Everyone here does realize he's not just some guy who only made a name for himself in this league because he's big and can occupy blockers, correct? This is a 2 time All-Pro player. He was at one time considered by the majority of people the best DT in the NFL. The injuries sort of took him out of focus, but he is still among the top 10, arguably even top 5.

This isn't something like giving a 2nd to TEN for McCareins and hoping he blossoms into a star. This IS a star player they're acquiring, and he fills arguably the greatest need on the team.

3rd and 5th for a player like Jenkins is not an overpayment in the least.

You're right, the chances of a 5th panning out a slim to none, just relative to what we're likely to get for Vilma is where I was going with it. Jenkins potentially fills a huge need and is a proven talent...much more valuable then 2 unknowns at this point.

I guess I'm just kinda projecting my uncertainty about how little we could be getting for Vilma. I couldn't be happier that we may have the answer at DT.

Jenkins has played 32 games the last 2 seasons at a high level, Vilma is coming off major surgery and may never play to an elite level again. It's not comparing like with like.

As already said, stats are meaningless for a NT. All this guy has to do is take up space in the middle of the defensive line, hold his ground and keep the opposition's lineman off our linebackers. After watching D-Rob get manhandled and pushed backwards on most running plays, hopefully we've finally got the right peg for this slot.

Yea, I get that, hence the prior post. Jenkins could end up being worth a first rounder if he fills the void at NT. A 5th in the grand scheme of things won't be that big of a deal. Like I said, I was just projecting about Vilma. The guy is a young talented LB thats nothing more then an afterthought for most fans at this point, yet we have 30 page threads about a guy like Pennington.

I understand the politics of the situation so no need to go there, but it still bugs me. I hope Mangini is the real deal.

Most of them seem pissed off about the move, mostly blaming the FO. A number of them seem to think that Jenkins doesn't fit our system. Thats what I found to be the most interesting part of the thread.
