Adding Faneca to D'Brick and Mangold gives us a very strong 3/5ths of our line. If we can add a big RT through FA or the Draft we'll have a very good line - that could get even better. Faneca is worth the money - for his talent and brains and leadership - and another 3-4 years of pro bowl caliber play.
2x's? Try 10x's. Faneca is a terrific OLineman This is definitely one of those times when overpaying, really isn't. 31 years old, he probably has 2 solid years left him, and maybe 3, but not likely. The skill he'll bring to the LG position is going to be worth the money, and on top of that, his leadership/knowledge will help Dbrick develop into a much better LT, much quicker. Faneca's play will be alot better then last year, because mangold is a much better Center, then the guy Pitt has now. So, while it'll appear we are overpaying, we would really be fixing one of our biggest holes, plus bringing in an excellent teacher. Shit, and with Callahan taking over the Oline coaching, Dbrick/Mangold should both look like studs... Thats my optimism for the week.
This is all true. Faneca would allow the Jets the flexibility to either draft a project LG late, or draft a mid round guy next year who Faneca can help groom to one day take over the LG position. Essentially, you are shoring up the one position on the Jets last year that was more directly involved with us constantly losing than any other one.
Great analysis. Faneca isn't going to turn the Jets offensive line into a powerhouse but he gives us the best chance of having D'Brick and Mangold turn into powerhouse linemen for the future. And you're absolutely right about how much time he has left. 2, maybe 3 years tops at this level and then we'll be looking to replace him soon. But by then hopefully we have two stalwarts for the next decade solidly in place on each side of him and we just need to find his replacement.
I hope this happens. This coaching staff seems like they are ready to get their head out of their ass and patch up this O-line. Ferguson, faneca,Mangold, Moore and Cherilus. and Callahan as the O-line coach. Pretty better line up. Now I can't wait to see what Thomas Jones and Leon can really do this year. I think Jones is going to have a big year and now we can see if Clemens is the real deal or not. I am excited!
This is an overall FA question. Do most of the signings occur Friday or does it usually take some time for them to actually start rolling?
The notables get gobbled up pretty fast unless their demands are off the planet. A fair amount of notables will be signed by Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
I would much prefer Jacob Bell 27yrs old over Alan Faneca 31yrs old........but I know what is going to end up happening...........Parcells is going to put Jacob Bell in a Dolphins uniform.
I too would prefer bell to Faneca, because I feel faneca started to fall off last year, especially when he let D-rob destroy him all game. Then again the vet leadership could bring to the table a huge improvement for both Brick and Mangold. But on the other side of the coin, he may only be effective for a year or two, where as Bell could live out a 5-6 year deal and still be effective come the completion of it. So I would rather pay Bell the big bucks, and not Faneca.
Typically, if you don't make a move within the first.. 4-5 days, then all the big names are gone. Doesn't mean you wont get any value, just means the big names are locked up. I see the appeal in wanting the 27 year old, over the 31 year old. Like i said before though, you need to take into account what exactly your paying for. Bell probably doesn't have the same leadership/skill as Faneca does I mean, he has been an achor on the Steelers line for years, he's the best option available for our concerns. And for Dbricks sake, we need the teacher. I wouldn't be mad if signed Bell, I would just prefer Faneca.. and it's not often i prefer the older player. Again, not that I disagree, but like I said previously, a big reason why Faneca had a poor year was mostly due to the play of the Pittsburgh steelers center. He was new to the team, and played pretty poorly. Mangold is a much better Center already.
Who says Bell can't teach? He's a young veteran himself and I don't see why the assumption has to be made that Faneca would be playing a mentor role while Bell couldn't. Faneca is older and more experienced yes, but it's not like anyone comes away ranting and raving about his leadership and other intangibles. Plus, paying big money for a guy who'll mostly mentor doesn't make sense. We have coaches for the same reasons, and Bell's talent and youth could allow D'Brick and Mangold flourish just as much as Faneca's supposed leadership ability can. These are two very good G's here, but given the choice I'll take the younger one that hasn't sucked for 2 seasons in a row and didn't bitch about a new contract.
I'm a truck driver , I'll take the $$$ to Pitt. Thought If we sign Fanny how many on here will start shouting superbowl run!!!
I'm not opposed to either of them at all. I was also for keeping Kendall, maybe its because i just favor the older veterans. And I am also more familiar with Faneca's play over Bells, another reason why I favor him. I won't be disappointed with whichever we sign [if we sign either].
Coaches teach. Peers influence behavior. There is a wealth of resource that Bell cannot even conceive of providing that a player like Faneca can. Like 9 (I believe?) Pro Bowls, one Super Bowl and countless play-off games. Sharing his experiences (both good and bad), work ethic (well-known) and attitude (that all perennial Pro Bowlers display) can definitely have a positive impact on both Brick and Mangold. What price will you pay to ensure that your two young studs reaches their potential as professional ball players?
Pretty high, but we'll be paying that for both of those guys. I realize credentials matter, but so does recent play and recent attitude. Faneca's been a sucky prick for two seasons, and we just got rid of our last aging, whiny LG looking to get paid. Not that I don't want Faneca, I just don't like what he's been the past couple seasons and it worries me. I can't say I'm a fan of a guy who bitches about money while playing for a perrenial SB contender...
