All you are thinking about is the passing game. Every player on the offensive line needs to work together in both the passing game, and the RUNNING game. Ever heard of an off-tackle run? The Chargers run a lot of those. Gosder Cherlius is a piece of shit compared to Jake Long. You can't even compare the two. Cherlius has awful footwork. What if Clemens doesn't work out and the Jets bring in a left handed quarterback? Who's on the blindside now? Not, D'brick. It will be some wash up that should be on the bench. I believe our coaching staff and front office will take a very long look at Nicks. He'll most likely play guard though. IF Long is available and I'm about 80% sure he WON'T be, he has to be the pick. BPA. (Also, can you please stop spacing between words like don' t and can' t. I don't care how German you are...that's fucking annoying.)
if Jake long is there at 6 I will be slightly dissapointed we took him, only because i think somebody would be interested in moving up for him. If we took him, I say make it open competition for the LT spot. whoever wins it gets the LT spot, and the loser becomes a dominant RT in the NFL. Honestly, it isnt that bad of a problem to have. if brick doesnt pan out, we have Long, and there will be constant competition from both of them to earn the LT spot because LT gets paid incredibly more money than RT's.
If Long becomes a Jet, there won't be a competition at left tackle. That's D'brick's job. Long will be a high caliber starter at right tackle RIGHT away.
i thought of both, why do you asume i don?t think about the Running game? i think if it comes to playing RT, they?re not that far apart. This leagues best passrushers play on the right side (defensive view), it doesn?t really matter that much, if our QB is lefthanded or righthandend, the LT will usually have to take on the opposing teams best passrusher. that?s the first reasonable point i?ve seen from you in this thread. actually, i don?t. mark it with the cursor, and you?ll see it. I don?t know why it?s different to yours, but if it annoys you, i like it.
The easiest way to go wrong would be to make the Detroit Lions-style error of drafting a bunch of skill position players when we're still hurting badly in the trenches.
if gholston, either long, or dorsey fall to us I think we take them. I'm hesitant on Gholston because of some things i've read about him being a pretty quiet person in the locker room and football not being his favorite thing in the world. But let's be honest he's a beast and will be a great pass rushing OLB. If DMC comes to us then i say trade down and look to get quentin groves or philip merling in Mid-Late 1st and then hopefully have Nicks availble in the early second. Speaking of Merling did he participate at combine becuase I didn't see any results???
I can't think of a better anology than that. As for who slides and who will be there at No.6 will be contingent on what the Falcons and Chiefs do at 3 and 5. It will be pretty much a given that Chris Long, Glen Dorsey, Jake Long will be gone by the 6th pick. If the Falcons pick-up Ryan then we'll have a shot at Gholston, McFadden and Ellis. Provided, of course, that the Chief cooperate and pick-up Clady. I think that the signal to trade down would be if Chris Long AND Gholston aren't there anymore after the fourth pick.
Normally I would agree with you but the Jets need help in the trenches and at the skill positions as well (sadly we are that bad). What our FO needs to do is to add as much talent as possible to our team (guys who they can start, no LT, C, or QB). Even if everything went perfectly in free agency and the draft, we will need another year or more to rebuild this mess of a team. If the BPA is a WR, take a WR. If the BPA is a RB, take the RB. As we add blue chip players to each position we can knock one more need of of our very long list.
The skill position players that the Jets have aren't the best but they're certanly not the worst. If the OL will hold up in pass-pro, do you think Penny/Clemens would do a better job of getting the ball to Coles, Cotchery, et al? If the OL can open holes and sustain them, would Jones and Washingto have statistically better years? If these things happen, would the Offense control the clock and keep the D fresher? On the Defensive side, if we had a Front 7 that could stop people and get to the QB, would the team have had a better statistical year last season? How many games again did the Jets lose by 7 points or less? I really don't understand why people seem to think that the whole team needs to get torn apart so that we can start all over again. We were 10-6 two seasons ago with roughly the same level of talent. Add to that talent base a potential FA pick-up (hopefully, Faneca), a quality draft (hopefully, Gholston, Cherilus and Rubin for starters) plus a weaker schedule befitting a 4-12 team and I wouldn't be surprised at all if we were back to being a play-off team.
You are right to a point , but sometimes its better to rip the whole thing apart and start from scratch. For years the Jets have been putting band-aids on and got no where. This clearout that Mangini is having is refreshing , just hope it works though.
