I just read a report from Rich Cimini saying the Jets and Kerry Rhodes are far apart in terms of contract negotiation.

How can this be? Why does our team insist on playing hardball with everybody? Kerry's contract shoulda been settled with a steak, a cigar and a handshake. BREAK THE BANK FOR THIS MAN. He is our best player.

If we're not using all our "hardball cap space" to sign free agents, and we're not using it to show love to our vet leaders like Coles, what the hell are we using it for?

Show of hands around the NFL: Who wants to come play for the Jets? Anyone? Anyone?

I hope Cimini is wrong. Rhodes should be given parity with whoever the top paid safety in the NFL is. Polamalu? Bob Sanders?

They'll get it done. You're never on the exact same page when negotiations just start out.

"FAR apart" and "[not] on the exact same page" are two totally different things. He should get top 5 safety money in the league...anything less and our FO is fczking up. I'm not worried yet, but I'm not happy either.

Safety's are currently underpaid and being asked to do more and more. What looks far apart today will be a bargain next year. Currently Rhodes is a little screwed because the franchise number for safties next year is liable to be substantially below his real market value. We may just screw him around for two years before we get serious and use the money elsewhere?

He'll sign at some point...I'm sure the Jets front office apologizes for not doing things fast enough to please everyone.

It will get done. he won't become a FA, there's something called the Franchise Tag.

We have an entire year to get it done. The beginning of negotiations are usually far apart.

I don't usually trust Cimini's reports, so take it with a grain of salt.

The nightmare scenario would be if Rhodes plans to follow his close friend Vilma to another team.

You guys crack me up.............Rhodes is under contract for this year. We have a year to sign him or at worst franchise him a year from now.

It’s rare when you find a player with the talent Rhodes has and it’s even harder to replace that talent. He will be signed and that’s a guaranty

I'd be very surprised if he weren't reesigned this year despite what the franchise for safeties is. I just think saying "we're far apart" is apr for the course with negotiations. It's like saying, "we're going to give it 100%" it's just something you say.

I believe the average of the top 5 safaties is in the range of 4.6 Mill, not a bad payday for Rhodes still on his 1st contract. IMO, there probably isn't a player on the Jet's roster that deserves a lucrative contract more than Rhodes, IMO, he's the Jet's best player.

I don't understand the attitude in some of these posts. It seems to be a player's agent's job to ask for about twice what it is reasonable to expect, so I would be amazed if the two camps were close together in the early stages of negotiations.

'Break the bank for this man'? Do you know what 'breaking the bank' means?

The Jets will sign Rhodes to a long-term deal, just give it time.

relax guys, Rhodes will not hit the open market, he will be a jet at this time a year from now, either under the franchise tag, or under a long-term deal. No one is saying he isnt a great player, who deserves to be paid, he actually will get paid very shortly. Negotiations always start a ways apart, it's in both sides benifet, the agent says i want a 40 million dollar deal over 5 years with a 15 million dollar signing bonus, the team says your mad, we won't pay more than 32 million over 5 years, with an 8 million dollar bonus. sides are miles apart, but the agent is trying to make the most money he can for his player, while the team is trying to sign their guy for the cheapest amount of money possible. Then some haggling insues, and eventually teams come to an understanding, and the guy gets paid and the team gets their guy. It isnt like signing guys in Madden, where you can work out tons of contracts in a matter of 20 mins, and then sign all draft picks in another 10. It takes time for sides to communicate and work out the right deal for everyone, nobody should be worried about this yet. If it comes franchise tag time next year and we appear not to be franchising him, then we can start worrying...
