He's being projected anywhere from late first to early third. He's big and quick for his size. Downsides are his consistency and his tendency to get stalled when somebody gets leverage on him. I think he'll make the transition to 3-4 NT fairly well because his biggest flaw, which is getting stalled when somebody engages him with leverage is not such a glaring problem when your job is to get tangled up with one or two people opposite you. It's a problem when your job is to penetrate a gap and make a tackle, that's not a 3-4 NT. At least not in the Parcells/Belichik 3-4.
I don't see any legit shot of Okam going in the late first or even second round. 1. He's tall for NT and his athleticism probably makes him a better prospect as an end. 2. His motor is and has been questioned. 3. His technique is raw. 4. He has trouble playing with leverage. 5. The motor questions have sounded serious. Don't get me wrong...he's an intelligent guy by all accounts...recent Texas DTs and DL players in general have been pretty good...he was pretty productive this year... Personally I like Dre Moore way more.
Rogers does play NT already. Have you ever seen the guy play? He commands a double team every time he is out on the field. His presence alone would make our defense so much better. Imagine having a DL or ellis, rogers and robertson. I'm all for it, get this guy on the jets
If you can possibly trade Vilma straight up for Rogers, you do it and don't think twice, just at the chance that Rogers can pick up the 3-4 and be an absolute monster in the middle. Vilma will never be better than decent in this defense, Rogers has a shot at being an elite NT, in the same breath as Wilfork and Hampton.
because being a fat piece of blob or a huge physical specimen doesn't necessarily mean he will be a good NT...
Athyba Rubin, Red Bryant and possibly Okam. But given all the other holes that we need to fill, I'd take this trade straight up and use one of our picks on other pressing needs.
Now, how do you know enough about what available in the draft to come down with that? I don't understand this. Let's see how the Combine sorts out these guys. We do have a week, you know?!
Not to be a stickler, but I thought Rubin did 35 reps? Honestly, this is the guy I want the Jets to snag in round 3. He can be that 3-4 NT that we have been lacking, we wont need to trade for Rodgers and we can develop him into the type of player we want. he would allow us to move D-rob to end and then Rubin could rotate with Pouha and our DL would improve quite a bit in my eyes, without having to sacrifice the potential of an elite ILB core with Vilma and Harris.
the thing is, i don't think he'll be there in round 3. I think he'll get taken mid to late second round and could possible move up more. he is the top NT prospect in the draft and the question is, do u want to spend a high second round pick on him?
That's one of the things that sucks about Parcells being in Miami - he's going to be looking for 3-4 type guys and he's always going to be drafting a few spots ahead of us in the round.
thats true pender I hadnt thought of that... but regardless, we have to do things our way anyways... and to answer plastics question, if we trade back with Dallas in round 1, I would most definately take Rubin with our high second rounder. that would give us the potential to draft in this manner. #22 Limas Sweed/Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie/Phillip Merling #28 Brandon Albert/Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie/Phillip Merling/Gosder Cherilus/Dan Conner/ Quentin Groves #37 Ahtyba Rubin/James Hardy/Brandon Albert/Quentin Groves Frankly you could take any combination of those players and we would be instantly upgraded at a myrid of positions. My favorite combos are Limas Sweed/Dominique Rodgers Cromartie/ Rubin and Cromartie/Albert/Rubin. I think we upgrade immensly at a variety of positions, which also happen to be needs as well, which is a huge help to our currently struggling program...
If we got sweed, albert, rubin, and then a guy like Cliff Avril in the third, I would pretty excited about the draft.
