I see this as another Reggie Bush situation, has Reggie made some difference with NO sure. However I don't think he panned out to be the uber running back everyone made him out to be. And Reggie was arguably better in college then Mcfadden. Fix the fundamentals like O-line and D-line, then worry about the nice to have picks.
Great move! I would really be happy if the Jets drafted a franchise running back. You got to think about it--the Jets have never done well unless they have that running back. I remember Freeman McNeil--what an amazing RB! And of course, Curtis Martin, what a great man and a great player. So let's hope the Jets can draft a franchise RB.
Yes and they are two seperate people. You can't make the case for one player because a similar player in the past has not particularly worked out. Personally, I'm more impressed with McFadden than I was with Bush coming out of college, but that is probably because I live in SEC country and have seen practically every game he has played the past two years. All I have to say is this: I'm a big South Carolina fan and what I saw McFadden do against Carolina was incredible. He ran in around and through us. He has elite speed can run in between the tackles and adds a whole different dynamic to the offense. If McFadden is available at #6, you take him, that simple.
Drafting McFadden would be a huge mistake when the Jets have such dire dire needs on both lines. Playmakers can't make plays if the OL can't open holes or protect the QB and playmakers don't get the chance to make plays if the defense can't stop the run or rush the passer and get off the field. Right now, the Jet OL can't block and the defense can't get off the field. Until the Jets fix those two fundamental issues, the McFaddens of the world are not worth 1st round money for the Jets. We go through this on this board every year. Fans want the Jets to make the "sexy" exciting pick and choose a skill player. There are numerous problems with that. First, the game is won in the trenches and the Jet trenches stink as bad as WWI trenches right now. Second, if you look at the history of the draft, the percentages of busts is much much higher with skill players - QBs, WRs and especially RBs than any other position. Third, RBs nowadays are a dime a dozen. Every team not only has one, but they have two. Hall of Fame RBs like Marshall Faulk are traded in their prime for 2nd round picks or are untradeable. RB have a short shelf like also. If the Jets draft McFadden and don't fix the line, he'll be through by the time the OL is good enough for him to make a difference. When the Jets drafted McNeil, they already had bookend tackles in Powell and Ward, a very good center in Fields and two good guards in Rasmussen and Alexander. Martin had his best years when the Jets had Mawae, Thomas, and Mackenzie. Right now the Jets have Mo Curly and Larry. It's not the time to waste an early round pick on a RB. Build a winning team from the lines out because it doesn't work the other way. Sign a FA guard or right tackle and draft an impact defensive player with the 6th pick.
if mcfadden is there you cant not take him...he is the best player available and hes a gamebreaker... its a lot better to take him and then take some risky picks in the second round on guys or later on guys who mangini has scouted as to be able to step in and do the job on the lines even if they arent well known..lets hope it works out
They didn't get rid of free agency, you know. You fill "holes" in free agency, and then you go BPA in the draft.
Many of the players the Jets need are being franchised. Plus the same people who are clamoring for McFadden are saying that the Jets should sign Samuel in free agency and use the draft to improve the lines. So where does the improvement in the lines come from????IMO, the Jets should use both free agency and the draft to improve the lines. With Cotchery, Coles, Jones, and Washington the Jets have enough playmakers to win. If both lines do not significantly improve, however, the Jets will clearly have another losing season and will not be building for the future. Show me how many time a high drafted running back going to a losing team with a poor OL made a difference the following year.
Mcfadden vs. Peterson Not a good comparison. Peterson has an excellent O-line in Minn. Our O-line is not even average. The O-line is the key as we all know and it is likely that with our current O-line fans would be calling Mcfadden a mistake by week 4. Here ya go ... 1) Replace Clement with a better FA option 2) Replace A. Clarke with a better FA option 3) P/U a real fullback 4) Draft Mcfadden Result = Instant Playoffs Really people, lets not overcomplicate things.
running backs are a dime a dozen...if you have a good offensive line. look at the giants (outside of jacobs...bradshaw, the ex-Jet etc..) or even Green Bay. Give a good college RB a hole and he'll run through it. Give a great college RB no hole and he'll pick up a yard or 2. work on lines, you can get RB's later.
the playmakers we need are the ones who protect the qb, and sack the opposing qb.OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINEMEN!!!!!!
I would like McFadden dropping down low enough for the Jets to draft him. This is a five-player draft, so if ANYONE above the Jets screws up, I will be a happy camper.
so if he drops to us at 6 we take gholston and give DMC to the pats? hel prob have 500 rushing yards against us alone in the two game we play.
If DMC is there at 6 the phones would be ringing off the hook and then we will be able to trade his ass for tons of picks and or a player. IMO this is a moot point, either the falcons or the raider will either or take him or trade the pick to a team that will
exactly. A huge part of picking mcFadden at #6 is to make sure he doesn't go to the pats. WE can't afford to let a division rival get possible, the best player in the draft.
