I don't understand this type of thinking. If somebody created a poll about the best Yankees player of all time and the choices were Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Bernie Williams, and Derek Jeter, you could only vote for Williams and Jeter. That would be silly because if anybody other than Ruth, Gehrig, or DiMaggio received votes it would be wrong.
For one even though I am not a Yankee fan Jeter or Williams would never be mentioned with them and if they are ...........lol. Second, you can vote for people you have never seen play and wax poetic on them, I choose not to as I feel it is disingenuous. I use the have I seen them play standard. We can agree to disagree..........
I think it makes a difference. I wasn't even sure whether to put Sauer on the list at first, but after reading the replies from people who saw him play, it seems he certainly belongs. I know enough about Maynard just from some basic facts, as I mentioned in the first post--Hall of Fame, number retired, Super Bowl ring as a Jet. I didn't need to see him play to know that. All the other guys on the list I saw their whole careers, actually had or have each of their jerseys.
There are no problems with the list, other than the fact Chrebet is getting way too many votes. I figured there are many that saw Sauer play. I just was not one of them.
QFT. If Sauer had had a full career he would have been a slam dunk HoFer, and possibly the best Jets receiver ever (and my avatar should make clear that that is not an easy thing for me to say). Toon is similar - if he had had a full career I believe he would have been a legitimate HoFer. The choice between them is then a choice between 6 top years (Toon) versus 4 slightly better years (Sauer). Walker played longer and ultimately did more cumulatively, but he was not the player either Sauer or Toon were. Johnson was a fine receiver, but IMO not quite at the level of the other guys, and he only played 4 years with the Jets. Chrebet is not even remotely in the class of the others. I guess that means that my order for Jets WRs is Maynard, Sauer <=> Toon, Walker, Johnson, Chrebet. As an old guy I'll vote for Sauer in this poll. It's also refreshing to actually have a list of all-time Jets that isn't ultimately embarrassing in its weakness.
I believe he held the yardage record, not the receptions record. Alworth was definitely better than Maynard - he was probably the second-best receiver I've ever seen, after Rice. IMO Maynard was better than all of the others on your list, with the caveat that I am talking about both peak and career performances.
Alworth was much better and I personally think if you put Otis Taylor with Namath and Maynard on the Chiefs Taylor is a slam dunk for the HOF and Maynard isn't in the HOF. I always felt Sauer was a much better WR than Maynard, he could do everything that Maynard could do and made the tough catch in traffic as good as anyone. Toon with Namath would have been a complete freak, the numbers would have been sick. Maynard was a down the field WR but he really wasn't a guy who made the catch in traffic.
Well, WB, as you can see from my first post I don't necessarily disagree about Sauer versus Maynard, but we'll never know (it isn't true that Sauer could do everything Maynard could do, however - Maynard was far better at stretching the field). I'm sure Namath to Toon would have been great, but I don't know if it would have been better than Namath to Maynard or Namath to Sauer. We'll have to agree to disagree about Taylor.
The Most Knowledgable Poster of TGG is wrong. ___ Don Maynard retired holding both the receptions and yardage records. Maynard retired with 633 receptions. He broke Raymond Berry's mark of 631. Maynard's record was broken by Charley Taylor in 1975. Berry retired with the yardage record. He had 9275 yards. Maynard broke that record in 1968. Maynard retired after the 1973 season with 11834 yards. Maynard's yardage record was broken by Charlie Joiner in 1986.
Best WR Okay, I got to admit... I voted for my FAVORITE Wide Receiver (Al Toon) not necessarily "The Best." I do think he had the most talent and potential. Also, the fact that the Jets had the chance to draft Rice and chose Toon instead... Well... I want to justify that trade. Toon had more talent than Rice. He just didn't have the same talent around him. And had some bad breaks... And I love thinking about those mid-1980s Jets teams, when Ken O'Brien would send a rocket to Toon! Man, that game against the Dolphins... Well, you just had to be there. Keyshawn Johnson might have been the best. I always like him no matter what. Likewise, Wesley Walker wasa great WR... I never saw Don Maynard, too young for that. But the highlghts I have seen are amazing. He derves to be #1 because of the team accomplishments. But so many Jets fans are too young to remember...
I'm a huge fan of Rob Moore, he was the reason i got interested in the Jets. granted looking back, i feel kind of silly for it. When i was real young, I had a NES system with Techmo Superbowl. and I always played as the Jets because they had this one deep pass to Rob Moore than was unstoppable. I never ran any other play and i always won. Rob Moore was my favorite player, and I started watching pro football the year after Moore moved on to Arizona. As sad as that was for me, for whatever reason I decided to stick with the Jets as opposed to following Moore to Arizona. This doesn't seem so bad, until you realize this just so happens to be 1996 the year the Jets went 1-15 under Kotite. Honestly, i'm pretty sure there are very, very few people who can say they became a die-hard Jets fan in their worst year in their 40+ year history... I also have since watched some of Moore's best stuff, and he was definately a great player, and he would have been an all-time great Jet had he stayed here his whole career. I would go so far as to say his numbers would be better than Chrebet's had he stuck with the Jets.
I have no problem with my error being pointed out, but the bolded statement above just makes you look like a jackass.
If we go back to the Titans days, Art Powell deserves consideration as well. He played most of his career witht he Raiders but he spent a few quality years with the Titans.
What does the most knowledgable award have to do w/ anything? That means he's not allowed to be wrong from time to time?
