1) Philip Merling, DE, Clemson- i honestly believe he is gonna light it up during the combine and i spoke one on one with Mangini at the coach of the year clinic in Windsor, CT. he seems to be VERY high on this guy and can be his own richard seymour 2) Quentin Groves, OLB, Auburn-we passed on Vernon so now we get the third best pass rushing olb in the draft(derrick harvey)...this would be a steal which is quite possible to happen and groves is a physical freak like vernon. He has amazing speed, he is thin but weights around 260-265 3) Carl Nicks, T, Nebraska- another steal in the draft that is quite possible to happen but not AS likely as groves in the second....Carl is a beast who has great size....6'5'' 330 and is a mauler....he is a great run blocker...raw but has a lot of talent!! 4)Harry Douglas, WR, Louisville-this kid is a playmaker at reciever which we lack....he could be our steve smith or santana moss....average height but is a burner...top intangibles....tough and has great hands...only real knock is his weight at only 170 lbs.. 5)J Lehman, ILB, Illinois- he is a tough inside linebacker who i believe will be a nice compliment to harris and a nice back up to vilma.....he is slow but a very reliable tackler and leader... 6) Tyvon Branch, CB, UConn-a solid corner who can contribute on special teams and hopefully develop into a good player....oh im a uconn fan 7)Cory Boyd, RB, South Carolina-due to the amazing runningback class....cory drops into our hands with our last pick...
I agree that Merling could shoot up that high with a good combine performance. I'm not sure I'm crazy over the pick though. Groves is fine by me, but I've heard about consistency issues from him. I like Carl Nicks, but he sounds like a potential project and we need help now. I'd be OK with him though. Not sure he makes it that far... Douglas is a fine pick just as long as he bulks up. 170 pounds on a 5-11 frame is too small for the NFL. Lehman seems like a perfect fit on this team. IMO he'll make it to the 5th round or beyond. Last two picks are fine by me as well. The draft is decent, but it would help to see who we would sign in free agency.. Overall it's a solid job and I'd be OK with this draft.
merling is waaaaaaaaaaaaay too small to play 3-4 DE and he is much more of an edge rusher. I would hate that draft pick. I like the Groves pick if we pass up on gholston. But that is if we pass up on gholston and i think the only way gholston isn't in green and white is if mcfadden is there or if my some shear act of God, chris long is there. However, i dont think groves will be there in the second round. I see him moving up after the combine
I'm not sure what I think of Merling now, but from what I've heard he's a very intriguing talent. He sounds like Justin Tuck on steroids. Hopefully he works out like Tuck did. Seems like he has the frame to either bulk up and play 3-4 DE or maybe he's athletic enough to handle DE/OLB. Interesting that Mangini seems so high on him. I guess I/we 'll learn more as the draft gets closer. Groves in the second is a steal IMO. This guy is going to have a great workout at the combine. I really think when it's all said and done he might end up the #1 DE/OLB in this draft. Alot of people slept on this guy because of injuries. But he's fluid, fast, loose, intelligent, confident, and a nasty pass rusher. DeMarcus Ware went into the '05 combine with alot of similar traits...good pass rusher and those 5 other traits...high second round grade... Theres a big difference though, Ware did have a good senior season while Groves spent most of his injured Nicks is nasty. I'm meh on Douglas...and to nitpick Moss and Smith are very different players...I think we need more size in our WR corps than someone...but I also tend to underrate smaller WRs.
why the hell would we take clady a guy that is terribly suited for the rt position, or are you implying that we give up on brick??? He has shown flashes ala giants game, but has struggled but there is now way they gve up on him till at least after the 10 season
I like this as long as we get some OL help in FA. Merling seems to be in the same mold as Chris Long, where he could go one way or the other towards DE or OLB. He seems like if used correctly he could be very versatile. I'm really looking forward to his combine. I love Groves as a prospect and if he's there in the second we have to nab him. We can't let an injury in his senior season deter us here. The guy's got talent and is just what we need in terms of the pass rush. He could essentially be our Abraham but without the selfishness (he's a stand up guy but all accounts I've heard). I doubt Nicks is there but there's a slight possibility. If he is that's another goot pick. Everyone else seems reasonable and I like the picks.
I think that Mangini has put all his eggs in one basket with regard to Clemens and will have to do something to make him (KC) look better. Last years line was worse than the previous , even with Kendall. If we don't sign a QUALITY LG/RT we will have to go early on day one with addressing that problem. Please , I don't want to be waiting for mangini to pick up the scraps off waivers like we did last year for DE.
I think brick would be a terrific RT and we could put Clady at LT, this would improve 2 positions in one move. Then we can pick up a LG, which seems to be an easier find this year. Think about it. We would have the youngest and biggest line in the division.
I know. That's why i think he would be a better RT. You can be lighter at RT and he can't put on the weight, this is going to be year 3.
That's because you have no idea what you're talking about. Anyway, back to the mock, Merling is a bad fit for the 3-4, and Nicks won't be there in the 3rd.
Can I ask how Mangini put all his eggs in one basket? If anything, fans have put all of Mangini's eggs in one basket.
REALLY? Was his problem run blocking? What was his major issue? Please expand O internet genius. Do you have any idea why moving him to the other side would make him a better player? I 'll give you a hint. Its not about his size or weight. Man I love these people who never played a day of football in high school, college or even pee wee.
He is a better run blocker than pass blocker(My opinion) his major problem is footwork coming off the snap on speed rushers. He is protecting the blind side and they have to keep a back there to chip. His size won't be a problem on the right side because he doesn't have a problem with big guys, its fast guys. He isn't a wide body and is easy to get around for smaller faster guys, or so it appears. But hey, what do I know.
You just described D'Brick as the opposite of himself...so hey, what do you know sounds like a legit question.
Make sure you tell Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan the same thing. You fell right for it. Two guys with about 40 years of NFL experiance. It was quoted directly from them genius. Arrogance is always your undoing.
Cool...a million other experts and years of game tape would say otherwise... D'Brick does well against the Osi's and Jason Taylor's of the league, the two guys who gave him the most trouble as a rookie was Seymour and Schoebel. The guy who gave him the most trouble last year was Jarvis Green. All those guys are power rushers... And I doubt you'll find anyone who agrees with your opinion that D'Brick as a run blocker > D'Brick as a pass blocker.
