I have never done one of these before, and don't really have the time to follow college football the way I would like. I get my pick projections from nfldraftscout . com. I am a defensive guy, and will focus on Defense. I do believe that, with a good to great defense, our offense is solid enough to get us to the next level. Trade: Jets receive #22, and #28 picks and 3rd pick from Dallas(I believe that Fargus will re-sign with Oakland, and Mcfadden will fall to us) Cowboys receive #6 pick. Jets receive KC 3rd pick KC receives Chad Pennington Free agents: Guard - Ryan Lilja Tackle - Max Starks QB - Rex Grossman Resign - Hank Poteat - Solid back up Victor Hobson - I good cheap LB Restructures/Extension: D-Rob - restructure Coles - restructure Ellis - restructure Rhodes -ext (May be the biggest priority) Position moves : D-Rob to DE Vilma to SS - don?t want to trade him so I would work him out here, and if he can?t handle it trade him. I could also see him next to Harris, but think that Hobson would be a solid partner at ILB. Hobson to ILB Draft: #22 - Dominique Cromartie - CB - Tennesee State (The kid is a stud, and will give us the pass defense to play with the best passing attack ever. CB is a need for us, and I will fill other needs later) #28 - Quentin Groves - OLB - Auburn (Will give us the pass rusher that we desperately need) 2nd round - Pat sims - DT - Auburn (Will make a great rotational guy behind Pouha, has size and speed to play end in rotation) 3rd round - John David Booty or Joe Flacco which ever is available (Don't know if Clemens is the answer, and either of these two could be a steal here. I am more sold on Booty.) 3rd round - Craig Steltz - S - LSU (I just love this kid) 3rd round - Shawn Crable - OLB - Michigan (I know I took Groves in the 2nd, but if Thomas has a bad year we have depth. He will need to hit the wait room, and taking on blockers) 4th - Kendal Langford - DE - Big DE from Hampton - (What can I say "project". He could be a beast) 5th - Adrian Arrington -WR- Michigan (Tall receiver with average speed, and good hands. I think a steal in 5th round) 6th - Jacob Hester - FB - LSU (Does this guy remind anybody else of Wayne Chrebet. Will give depth at Half Back, and a solid FB.) 7th - Shannon Tevaga - OT -UCLA (Depth, don't know anything about him) I really don?t want to trade Vilma. If he won't or can't play SS, and we can get a late first or second. I would add Jamaal Charles or Chris Johnson or Limas Sweed or James Hardy. I may opt for Calais Campbell, who I believe will make a solid 3-4 defense end.
1) Don't really like the move for Vilma. It will be a serious transition for him and is rather risky. It should only been done if 1) they are absolutely sure taht he can play safety or 2) they have no other choice. 2) Don't know if we can get a 3rd rounder for chad. I dont think the chiefs will offer up a 3rd rounder. Maybe a 4th but 3rd seems rather high. 3) I like the free agent signing. Not too high on the rex grossman signing cuz he might cost a little too much for a backup. But i like the lilja and starks signings. They are more realistic signigns than faneca and andrews. 4) It will be very difficult to restructure all those players and i dont see it happening 5) i hate trading down from #6. This draft is very very weak IMO. There is the top ten and then a HUGE dropoff. I see Dominique Cromartie and Quentin Groves as mediocre players in the NFL while McFadden has tons of ability and is a top prospect. 6) why would we spend a 3rd round pick on a qb, especially after signing rex grossman? 7) I really dont think crable falls to the late 3rd round. I would be ecstatic if the jets can get him in the 3rd round but im not sure it will happen
dude, Kansas City doesn't have the 3rd overall pick...if you look at this guy's off-season, you can see that we have an extra 3rd ROUNDER.
Honestly I don't hate this scenario I like the fact we move Chad, I hate the Vilma move to SS though, he should play inside next to Harris. I like Cromartie alot not really a fan of Groves, would rather take the monster reciever like Sweed or Hardy at #28. I prefer Dre Moore to Pat Simms, but thats just my opinion. I am a huge fan of Craig Steltz and I think he would be a great addition. The rest of the draft I agree with pretty much. I think Flacco will be better than Booty, but also just my opinion. I think that we could do better, in Free Agency, I think we could still afford to get Stacy Andrews over Max Starks. Also I am not entirely fond of grossman, I think it is pyscho to both draft a QB and bring in a guy in FA. Grossman is just a horrid qb to begin with so he is just the worst case choice to bring in from FA. I would prefer a guy like Chris Simms, who is hungry to earn another shot as a starter, having only lost his job to his appendix.
Interesting trade. Sort of crazy, but it makes some sense I suppose. I wouldn't cry over it. Vilma to SS? Well the St. Louis Rams tried a similar move with speedy OLB Pisa Tinoisamoa a couple of years ago and it didn't work out. I don't think he's a SS though. I'd give it a shot, unlike some people on this board who are completely opposed to it, but I doubt it works. Free Agent signings are fine and we could even bring in one more guy. I'd prefer another guy to Lilja though. He's more of a zone-blocking type. The draft is fine as well, although John David Booty has one problem: Lack of arm strength... Not a road I'd like to go down again. I'd prefer Flacco. There's some big time potential there IMO. Overall, this is solid. Nice first try.
Overall a good job on your first mock.... The trade with Dallas is a strong possibility if McFadden drops to us at #6, but Jerry Jones might be content enough to go with the other Razorback RB late in the first round. - Felix Jones. I'm not sold on the Jets drafting a QB. Tangini drafted Clemens only a couple years ago, they are not about to give up on him yet and they will not create their own QB controversy. If Clemens doesn't show improivement this year...maybe and that is a big maybe they draft a QB next year. I would think we MUST address the OL in the foirst 3 rounds. If Cherilus or one of the top guards are there in Rd 3 I would think that is the way we go. ....and if Arrington and Hester drop to 5 and 6 respectively I would be shocked. I think a lot of people are going to grade Hester especially very high. He could become a Roger Craig type player out of the backfield.
I don't want to trash you too much because I don't want to discourage you. Just a few notes: 1. Vilma is NOT a SS. He's just not. 2. Kansas City would not give a 3rd RD pick for Chad, he's not a starter on our team and has been replaced. They have the upper hand. A 5th rounder is more realistic. 3. Max Starks lost his starting job to a late round Hofstra player and is a backup -- and should stay that way. 4. Rex Grossman is not an elite level player. Not even behind a great offensive line. 5. Your draft is unrealistic in the mid-rounds. Crable and Langford will likely go higher than where you spotted them. 6. I think Steltz is a beast with a non-stop motor. I'd love that pickup. He'd be a demon on special teams. 7. Jacob Hester does not remind me of Wayne Chrebet. Sorry. The first one is always the hardest. Keep it up!
A couple things.. 1. First and foremost J Vilma isn't a SS. He will be the starting ILB next to Harris when he is physically able to play. 2. Hate the FA additions, Lilja is too small to play in our system, Starks stinks and Grossman offers no upside to us. 3. Dont see us getting a 3rd for Chad, KC is really the only team that I can see as a reaslistic possibilty for Chad next year. I just cant see them offering up a 3rd for him, maybe a 4th or 5th but even that I dont see likely. 4. Not crazy about the draft, I guess I would make that trade if the draft falls into place like that, although I would have a real hard time passing on a talent like DMac without being blown away by an offer, that offer doesn't blow me away. I'd much rather spend the dough on Samuel than use another first round pick on a CB. Like the Groves pick and the Sims pick but then you doubled up on those positions later in the draft. For example I dont see the reason to pick Crable in the 3rd when we just picked Groves in the first or Langford in the 4th when we picked Sims in the 2nd. Good effort though..
