Does anybody have an opinion about Justin Miller's prospects...?

At the beginning of the season, the "party line" was that he was working extremely hard to get better at CB. ...Working on his discipline... working on his technique.

Then he gets a 'knee' and goes direct to jail (IR), does not pass 'go', or anything.

What about Justin Miller? He's one of the fastest in the NFL (2 yrs ago he won that phony race as the fastest man in the NFL, yawn).

On a team without a requisite of speed, Justin Miller should become a 'project', it seems to me.

Signing Samuel to a cap-busting contract would essentially invalidate the trade up for Revis last season. If the Jets were looking to bring in a strong mid-career CB they should have used the picks naturally last year, as they fell, to solidify the trenches.

This FO is really confused at this point about how to assemble a winning talent lineup. Their moves, while sound on value are very weak on stabilizing the talent base of a declining team.

  5. Some Jet fans will NEVER comprehend the concept of upgrading a position...all they know are filling primary needs, andignoring that the rest of the roster, is pretty much average.

  6. IMO, signing Samuel would FURTHER validate the trading up for Revis. What that suggests to me, is we are building our defense on the strength of our secondary. It is true we need to address the pass rush/ front 7 first and foremost...but if you don't think Parcells would do the exact same thing if he were in mangini's shoes...you're kidding yourself. And I can guarantee if it were Parcells...no one would have an issue.

This is about bringing in a top 10 player at his position, that our coach knows very well, who's played in our system, and would bring one of corps into an elite status(something we currently don't have).

We have a ton of cap room...and I don't understand why so many can't grasp this..and think that if we sign Samuel, the lines can't be addressed.

Hey Kurt, how the hell are you?

Your argument has merit and I think the thing that would put me over the top with Samuel is if it were a move that didn't break the bank. If Samuel is going to shop himself silly and hold out for astronomical numbers, then I say we pass. But if Mangini has this so-called "in" that everyone seems to think he has, meaning a great relationship with him and a willingness on his part to come here without totally reaming us a new one, then I say we go for it. It's all going to depend on numbers. It should be interesting.

As far as validating the Revis move by acquiring Samuel, I agree. I think Tangini knows Miller is not going to be the answer and Dyson is getting too old. If we had Samuel, Rhodes and Revis in the secondary it'd be totally sick. Then, if we could do something to get a pass rush going, THAT would really be something. Now you have the pressure AND the ability to take advantage of the poor tosses associated with the rush.

In your opinion, would you look for a NT as well as DE at this point? And if so, who would give us the best upgrade at these positions?

^^all I got to say about that is look at denver...they had bailey and bly in the secondary but nobody up front and their D still sucked this year. We need the big bodies up front...period. CB2 will be just fine as manned by the crack team of miller, poteat, and dyson. Especially if dyson heals up and returns to his 2006 form, we'll be just fine...and can use the money for the big boys.

Whats not to understand? And upgrade is an upgrade. I posed a question in the Faneca thread the other day. Would anyone actually be angry if we signed this guy? Probably not, but it doesn't mean he's everyone's first choice.

With most of the top tier talent on the defensive side of the ball likely to be tagged, Samuel may be the best or one of the best players available at a position where we could use an upgrade. If the Jets plan to blow there wad on one guy though, I'd rather see it on an offensive lineman then a CB. If they want to sign 2 big names then seeing Samuel in Green would be awesome.

The Jets should bring in everyone they can. There are plenty of teams with as much or more cap space then the Jets, and chances are most of them are coming off better seasons.

Well put. In a perfect world, would I want to use the cap room on an impact pass-rusher, NT or offensive lineman? Of course I would. But the impact players at those positions (Suggs, Dansby, Jordan Gross) are going to be franchised. Yes, we should try to fill the biggest needs, but signing second tier (at best) players over top tier talent won't get you anywhere.

A lot of people who have been harping on the price of someone like Samuel I think are underestimating the cost of these other free agent options. Yes, Samuel will cost $9-10 million a year, but you're kidding yourself if you think you can get a package of good free agents at the same cost. Did we forget that someone like Coleman got $4 mil per a year ago? Stacy Andrews, Alan Faneca, Bryant Johnson, Ethan Kelley, etc. are not coming cheap.

Do all of these salaries seem absurd? Yes, they do, but it's easy to forget just how much the NFL salary cap has sky-rocketed the past few years. In 2003, the cap was at $75 million, in 2006 it was at $102.5 million and in 08 it's expected to be at $116 million.

This is a good point. We tend to forget that the allowable Cap seems to growing at about an annual 7% add-on rate. This is substantially higher than the cost of living, for example, or other measurable economic comparisons.

So, to pay a guy what seems outrageous last year may in fact not be so bad for the coming season or especially 3 years out.

Name the last elite secondary to win a Super Bowl.

Samuel is not leaving the Pats to play for a cellar team unless the Jets throw money at him in an unprecedented way. That would be bad for the cap moving forward and would prevent moves the Jet really need to make.

And to answer my first question:

None of the Patriots secondaries have been elite, in fact they moved away from putting value there at the start of their run when they let Lawyer Milloy go. They then emphasized how little they think star power is required there when they let Ty Law walk.

The Steelers have one elite guy in their secondary in Polamalu and he's a safety.

The Colts have one semi-elite guy in their secondary in Bob Sanders and he's a safety.

The Ravens had two elite guys in their secondary in 2000 in Chris McAlister and an aging Rod Woodson at safety.

The Rams had nobody who was elite in their defensive backfield in 1999, although Todd Lyght made the pro bowl for the only time in his career that season.

Cornerbacks just do not matter at the highest level of play. An average guy will hold his own if the pass rush is working and play-action has been shut off and if those things have not happened you could have Deion Sanders and Champ Bailey back there and you are still going to lose.

I completely agree- the Jets are going to need to throw a ton of $$$ at Samuel to get him to come here. It's not really necessary, we spent a lot on Revis and there is no need to overspend for a #2 CB. The Broncos had two great CB and it didn't help them much.

Bottom line, without a pass rush, even the most talented secondary will be picked apart. The resources for signing Samuel would be much better utilized in getting a pass-rush and/or shoring up the O-line.

It all depends on how much cap room we have. I'd be willing to pay if it meant we could still adress the offensive line thru free agency (Ruben Brown/Starks). Our secondary will be loaded, allowing us to blitz more which will help our piss poor passrush immensely. Most teams don't have one cover corner, we have a chance to have two AND get a guy like Gholston or some other top passrusher at #6. Oh yeah, and it weakens our top competition at the same time.

Free agent CBs are just too expensive. For Samuel, it's all about the money. No CB is worth what he will command. If the Jets are going to break the bank, break it on an OL.

I keep seeing this line. Yet, nobody has backed it up on who to "Break the bank for"

The NYJ defense has to function as a team to achieve any success, in my opinion. There are two units that have to integrate -- The DL/LBs and the Ss /CBs. Fantasy Football face card trading doesn't begin to address this issue. When you (the NYJ that is) look at a FA or a draft guy you have to determine how he's going to fit in with the unit you've got, complementing the unit's existing strengths and weaknesses, playing the system you have developed.

This isn't about stats and resume, and it's a shot in the dark if he fits in well and soon enough to win enough games to make a difference.

There's really no rule that says the Jets have to "Break the bank" for anyone, but there are good lineman available.

    Excellent spin as usual...

And for the millionth time I ask...and probably get no reply...who would you have picked in last years draft? We got 2 of the 5 best rookies in the class IMO, and I have no idea how that says this front office is "confused."

Yes, you build a team from the inside out. This is a regime that obviously understands that as they went out and used two first round picks on a franchise LT and C in their first draft. That DOES NOT MEAN you draft O-line and D-line in the first and second round of every draft until those areas are built.

And then you actually spit that last line out like anybody believes that...declining? Kerry Rhodes, Darrelle Revis, David Harris, D'Brick, Mangold, Cotchery, Leon, Miller, Elam, Thomas, Clemens...are all pre-prime (well technically BT, Leon, Rhodes, and Elam are all early prime) talents...how in the fuck are we declining? Because you choose to mope about 2007's W-L record and proclaim the sky is falling until we win a Super Bowl?

It's hard to "stabilize" (whatever thats even supposed to mean here) talent when the talent level is one of the lowest in the league...all of those young guys have broken out or been drafted under this regime...casually ignored by people who think like you...Mangini and Tanny are NOT drafting to "stabilize" this franchise...they are drafting to rebuild it. The day you understand that might be the day you realize they are not doing anywhere near as bad a job as you constantly, constantly tell everyone they are doing.

You sound like you were one of the people who saw '06's 10-6 and actually thought we were thisclose to the Pats.
