W/ the amount of cap room we're going to have headed into Fa(And it will be much more than currently as we will be cleaning house of some dead weight) we can afford to go after players of many different positions. This team is in need of GOOD players everywhere...and Samuel is a GOOD player. Consider the following... 1. An improved secondary allows more flexibility to have a more creative pass rush. Frankly, Samuel takes our secondary to an elite level. 2. Mangini is similar to that of Parcells and BB, in which he likes to bring in "His guys". This improves leadership, scheme interpretation and knowing what to expect from the player. It helps when the player is a top 10 CB to pair w/ an elite young CB. 3. Do you really think Tannenbaum would throw a ridiculous unmanageable contract at a player? Say what you will about his personell evaluation, but when it comes to the cap...I have full confidence in his ability. He will not overpay beyond the going rate, and he will make the contract manageable and reasonable.
Not that I am opposed to signing Samuel (although i don't think his signing is a top priority), but if you want to see that two top CBs can't make a defense, see the Broncos. They had Bailey and Bly and zero pass rush this year. Bailey ended up having arguably his worst year of his career and was certainly not a shutdown CB this year. I do realize the Broncos play the 4-3 and, of course, the defensive playcalling/coaching can make a difference.
Sign A.Samuel... Spend the money... It's about time. Look at what Revis did as a rookie, we all loved him... And we will all be in love with this Young secondary with A.Samuel, D.Revis and K.Rhodes. P.S. Mangini is a Defensive type coach, and works great with the Secondary... Give him 2 Corners who can lock up on other teams WR's each and every Sunday, and a safety in K.Rhodes making plays and ball-hawking, and this Jets Defense will have one of the best secondarys in the league... Call me crazy, but it's gonna be better than the Ravens. There are 3 aspects of Defense... The secondary, LB's, and the D-Line... Why not go out and get one of the best secondarys with the addition of a proven play-maker in A.Samuel' Draft VERNON GHOLSTON at #6 in the First round This kid has BEAST written all over his play in the way he gets after the QB, one hell of a motor. J.Vilma, D.Harris, V.Gholston, D.Revis, K.Rhodes, A.Samuel with players like E.Barton, D.Robertson, S.Ellis who can all contribute.
I rather Oline and/or Dline in free agency...Samuels is gonna want to much money and isn't a need IMO.
Agreed. That is some observation there Smith. Thanks  As for Samual in general, I would love to have him. Going to have to ante up though, and is Nate Clements money worth a guy in the secondary??
I dont know why, but everyone seems to think that our #2 CB position is NOT A NEED??? Are you kidding me? We play Brady 2 times a year. Having either Poteat, D.Barett, A.Dyson or even J.Miller as our #2 CB going into next season is a HUGE need in my eyes. Go and get A.Samuel and line him up next to D.Revis with Rhodes flying around in the backfield. We can sign an O-Lineman through FA and even draft one in the 2nd round, then focus on D-Line in the 3rd or 4th round.
While I agree that we need to fix the lines on both sides before worrying about anything else, you don't pass up a chance at Samuel. This isn't the draft where you're risking everything on a bet. Samuel is proven, and will immediately make Revis a better player. Our secondary will be very good with him added in. Plus, it makes Miller available to solely play ST, preserving Leon. That's another upgrade. Plus it would allow our LBs to stay closer to the line, another upgrade. It's not like adding an elite NT, but it's not a bad move at all either.
a decision like this requires looking at the whole picture, like other FAs available, Draft talent available at our pics, contract status of our own players, team needs to sustain improvement, and available cap space to get it all done. in a vacuum, sam is a good db that would help the team, so go get him. But not at the expense of other more pressing needs. if you had to choose between sam and a dominating nt, what would you take? this is life in the nfl. the front office that does the best job of filling the most pressing needs with the cap available and not overpaying for any one position generally makes out the best. see NE over the last 7 years.
I'd rather not spend the shitload of money it would take to sign Samuels on Samuels and use it to sign other guys. He's not even a great man to man corner, and judging by drafting Revis...Mangini expects his corners to be able to match up one on one. IF we did sign a big name corner in FA, I'd hope its Asomugha. He's a much better and more physical corner than Samuels. Plus, he's a Rob Ryan guy and Mangini likes "his" guys right? Why does everyone want Samuels so bad? He's not a top cover corner or anything. He's a guy looking to get paid because he's had alot of INTs. I don't see what the fetish for him is on this board...he's not even the best FA CB....he's just a pretty good one who happens to be a Patriot with Mangini ties therefore he must be a Mangini guy and how can we pass up a Mangini guy right?
That is the best post on this thread. Some people just view the available cap space we have this year as "use it or lose it" cash. This guy is gonna want BIG money on a LONG-TERM contract. Where does that leave us in terms of cap room for 2009 & beyond? I couldnt agree w/you more -- there are a ton of variables besides just "Oh my God, Asante Samuel is an unrestricted free agent,......lets sign him because it would make a sick secondary."
I don't think that's what people are saying! Let me put it to you this way: Say we sign some young depth along the OL and DL(Something that will likely occur), are we ready to contend for a super bowl? I would hope your answer is a resounding NO! We still need good players and we still need PLAYMAKERS! Asaunte Samuel is a good player, and no one can argue that he isn't a play maker. The fact that he played in a similar scheme in New England, our HC knows him well, and It'd hurt our biggest competition..make it an attractive sequence if the numbers work. We are going to have a ridiculous amount of cap room, after some house cleaning takes place. So much so, that we can afford to upgrade some positions that may not be our most glaring needs. I'm sure the line positions will be addressed....I'm not sure what the problem is w/ addressing other needs, if we are in good health cap wise!
H'mm & do you think quality O & D L/man & I mean QUALITY players grow on trees & just lining up wanting to play for the NYJs? Do you not think Belly is not already on the hunt for them since he knows now he must upgrade to get by the NYGs. Do you realize that we need at least 3 or 4 D/lman & 2 guards & 2 tackles on the O line just for starters? That does not include any LBers or DBF players on D nor WRs & TEs on O. I am talking QUALITY not TC fodder again like we did this past TC
I would welcome this signing but what difference does it make if they run the ball down your throat because you have no push on the line or size to close the gaping holes! Way too early to get all creamed up for a corner. Build the line for this 3-4 defesnse , make them have to pass to make this potential signing mean something.
We need Linemen! If Cb's won Championships Beli would sign Samuel! If you have a good line you can turn a mediocre Cb into a Pro bowler! We need to beef up both lines and deal with the skill positions later.
Ah that is far to logical thinking for most on this board. You should have inserted the word QUALITY not TC fodder before lineman which is what I think you mean
That is exacly correct they to in the ultimate end are losers just like we were. There 18-1 & our 4-12 is the same no matter how you slice & dice it. both had a unsuccessful season which is what they are saying up there in beantown
