The Packers are unlikely to re-sign free agent DL Corey Williams. With Albert Haynesworth likely to be franchised by the Titans, Williams is set to cash in as the top defensive tackle on the market. The Packers are deep enough to withstand the loss with Johnny Jolly, Ryan Pickett, and Justin Harrell all locked up.Source: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Forget about Asante Samuel. Our pass D was ranked 9th in the entire NFL in the 2007 regular season ------- and that was without a pass rush of any kind. To put it into perspective, New England was ranked 6th, the NY Giants were ranked 11th. Our pass D was the only thing to be proud of last year. I'm sick & tired of the posts that say a Revis-Samuel-Rhodes secondary would be sick. This is the guy we should get. Our D-line needs upgrade. 6-4 313lbs. Averaged 7 sacks per season over the last 2 years. He'll be 28 at the start of the exhibition season. We need the bodies upfront!!
Agree. We need a pass rush really, really bad. A lot of people want the Jets to be big spenders this offseason, but that doesn't mean they have to throw a ton of cash at a guy like Samuel. The $$ needs to go to the lines and work backwards from there.
Yeah I would definately give this guy a big contract. He's still young and improving and is nearing the prime of his career.
The question is...where does he fit in the 3-4? We can't just blindly give a big contract to someone if they don't make sense in our scheme.
He's a three-technique player. The Pro Football Weekly 2004 Draft Preview had this to say: "Needs to play in a simple scheme where he doesn't have to process what he sees and can just be turned loose." He doesn't seem like a good fit for the Jets. I think Williams played well in part because the other players on the GB line are very good.
This CS didnt seem to hesitate for a second putting players into the 3-4 D when they didnt have close to the personnel fitting for it. You're gonna tell me Shaun Ellis is a 3-4 DE? Based on size alone, the guy fits the physical specimen model for a 3-4 D. The rest is called coaching and practice.
Yeah, maybe we should give up on a guy after 3 proven NFL seasons because of what was written up about him back in 2004 as a 6th round draft pick. If I recall, the writeup about Tom Brady on draft day wasnt that great either, another 6th round waste.
You didnt really answer my question and appear to be furthering my point, that some of you want to sign a DL for the sake of signing a DL.
My response to you had a ton of childish sarcasm & I apologize for it. I’ve always made a point of respecting my fellow JET brethren on this website. I was a little drunk watching the Super Bowl. I read your quote about him being a 3 technique player & admit that this is guy who played the interior DT position in a 4-3. And I agree - not every guy from that D will transition well to a DE position in our 3-4. But I watched him closely in about 5 games this year because he was on my preliminary list of unrestricted free agents & he showed me some good stuff -- quickness off the snap, good use of his hands & footwork. He reminded me a little bit of Ty Warren of the PATS D. He did not look to me to be a fat slow slug who can only play the DT 4-3. He showed me that he can tie up the O-linemen from getting to the LBs. His stats show that he had 7 sacks from the DT position for the last 2 seasons, and he has excellent size at 6-4 313lbs which is the big physical specimen of a 3-4 DE to keep us from getting pushed around & possibly stopping the run for the first time since the AFC championship season in 1998. It is my opinion that he is not strictly a 3 technique player. But I must admit, that I have also been a little radical in my thinking that we should try & trade Shaun Ellis for a draft pick because he doesn’t fit the 3-4 DE (IMO). I’m not acting from the mindframe of “get the D-lineman just for the sake of getting a D-lineman”. I have been totally against getting Haynesworth this year – I believe this guy smells of bust who has been playing his a$$ off in a contract year. But we need to take care of this position either in FA or the draft. Some people here want Tommy Kelly from the Raiders – he plays in a 4-3, at the DE position now. What makes him ready for a 3-4 DE position? – especially after a torn ACL in 2007.
I think he would be a great fit at 34 DE. His size is about perfect, he?s explosive at the point of attack and a good passrusher. If he is capeable of playing 2-gap in the running game, he?s a prototype 34 DE, imo.
You guys are all missing the point. Jets fans still don't get the role of defensive lineman in the 3-4 defense. They're not supposed to be pass rushers of any kind, they're supposed to free up the linebackers to make plays. The best 3-4 we ever ran here featured the likes of Ellis, Ernie Logan, and Rick Lyle, with Jason Ferguson in the middle. None of those guys were particularly immense, none could rush the passer, but all were expert at holding at the point of attack. That scheme flourished because we had play makers at linebacker. Cox, Cascadden, and Lewis, Jones- All those guys filled the holes and hit. That's the strength of the scheme. The lineman merely have to be stout. We simply need another play maker at linebacker and a lineman who can control the middle. When we get that, we'll improve drastically. This year our cap room and our draft slot offers us a unique opportunity to get it done. I'm confident we will. -X-
i disagree. First off, that 34 we ran back than, was a different, than the one we run now. 34 DEs in our current sceme are supposed to penetrate and collapse the pocket in the passrush, creating holes for the LBs and giving the QB nothing to step up. Yeah, the main rushers are the OLBs, but for their rush to be sucsessfull, you need the DL to crate havoc, just as you need the DTs in a 43 for you DEs to be sucessfull. You need good passrushers, who are very diciplined and stay in their lanes, and don?t get washed to the outside.
No, it's not. Quite simply, the role is to provide lanes for the linebackers and occupy blockers. The confusion arises from a team like San Diego and a guy like Louis Castillo, but a great majority of his sacks come from Merriman and Phillips closing the pocket like a vise around the quarterback and forcing him to step up. You have it backwards. -X-
