The only a person who hasen't watched them pitch would say they're not hall of famer calibur players. Jobas only weakness is bugs. Huges is a like a modern day Kofax These guys are gonna be 20 game winning rocks for the Yankees rotation for a decade +. Don't belive me, watch them play. After years of mismanaging their young talent the Yankees finally got it right. Who needs Santana when you have this? Hall - of - Fame write it down. who cares about payroll anyways? The Mets are #2 or #3 right up there with the Sox and Yankees themselves.
I realize looking at it talent wise, the Santana trade should have been a no-brainer for the Yankees. However, the focus has been and should be on getting younger, and this trade would offset that. The Yankees have a good foundation in place that is getting younger and Kennedy and Hughes are a big part of that. Although they aren't guarantees to be sure, they have shown what they could be capable of, and although having the best pitcher in baseball would have been great, I still really like what getting younger brings to the team. Also, if Cashman conceded to this trade what's to stop the Yankees from trading multiple other young players for older all-stars, which would completely offset the progress that has been made.
This whole mess started with this gem I commend that the Yankees want to hold onto their talent, just so long as you realize that it isn't a guarantee that they live up to their potential, while I think some Yankee fans already get that I have a suspicion that some are ignorant of this. And no one is or has been bringing up payroll for at least a year.
Great post Frank. Honestly, the Mets are a step up on the Yankees right now, IMO. That's for exactly the reason you pointed out, the experience factor. Our starting rotation has the disadvantage of youth, whereas yours has more experience. I'm fine with that. The Yanks can take a step back this year if it gives our young arms the chance to move forward. The Mets made magic yesterday, and for that, they are to be commended. Are they now the best team in the NL? I don't know if I'd go that far right now. I think the Yankees and Mets are both in the playoffs this October. I also think both will be going home before the World Series starts. Next year could be a totally different story though.

The combined record for Yankee starters not named Pettitte, Wang and Mussina was 20-21 with a 5.10 in 360 innings (71 starts) last year. While I think some people are expecting too much out of the three kids, I like the odds of them eclipsing those numbers by a decent amount. The much bigger issue is replacing the bullpen innings from Joba, Vizcaino and Proctor from a year ago. While no one will confuse Vizcaino/Proctor with Stanton/Nelson circa 98, they were for most of the season, the team's two best middle relievers. The trio of Joba, Vizcaino and Proctor gave the Yanks a 3.51 ERA in 153.2 innings last year. I have a real hard time envisioning Hawkins/Ohlendorf/Ramirez replacing that type of production. If I had to guess today, I do not think the Yanks would make the playoffs. They have a very talented roster, but with the state of the Red Sox, Indians and Tigers, I think it will take 95+ wins to make the playoffs.
The success of the 2008 Yankees could come down to how long their young reliever prospects like Sanchez (he'd be a reliever at the ML level next year), Melancon, Cox, Whelan, Robertson, etc. take to get to the MLB level. The first three are recovering from TJS, but all should definitely be ready to contribute by the summer, or mid-August at the latest (for Sanchez). If a few of these guys continue to work their way thru the system and can have an immediate impact on the MLB level, the Yankees will be fine. If not, they'll be ready to start their big run in '09 instead.

that is the same assumption people had last year about the yankees, and after the first month people were believing they had no chance... and what happened? tell me what happened? and what happened to the mets? you can never count the yankees out, if you do not know this by now, then your living in a jock starp.
