The Yankees rotation is better this season than it was last season. To argue otherwise is just wrong. Wang and Pettite can throw a lot of innings. Kennedy, Hughes, Chamberlain, and Mussina will make up the rest of the starts. I'm sorry, but that's upgrade city most likely. I wish he were on a team other than the Mets, but nothing I can do. I have no problem with the Mets as a team or an organization. I was completely indifferent towards them until the baseball talk on this board hit full swing and the Mets/Yankees arguments begin in every thread. Don't count your chickens before they are hatched, though, Mets fans. That lineup didn't do a whole lot late in the season, Santana has to adjust to a new league (sounds easy, but it isn't always), Pedro isn't usually healthy, and until yesterday, the Mets didn't help themselves out this offseason. On paper, the Mets and Arizona probably have the two best teams in the NL. Gun to my head, I pick the Mets to win the NL. Great deal for the Mets. The Mets needed something like this badly.
no i dont think you get it. we made the playoffs last year with a much worse rotation. now im not guaranteeing a playoff spot, but we have just as good of a shot this year as last year.
Realsitic. Joba is in the pen. Kennedy and Hughes might be decent to good, prepare for them to be shutdown or have a dead arm period. Pettite probably will be good, kind of has some off the field things going on. Wang his ball didn't have the bite at the end of the year, is he an "Ace" jury is out. Mussina flat out sucks, and will kill your middle relievers.
So the rookies are better then Clemens? Moose, Pettite and Wang are the same cast of characters from last season. You hope the Kids are better then Igawa, but who isn't?
That's the pessimistic viewpoint. Joba will start this season, whether it's to start the season or whether it's later in the season. I could also say that Hughes steps up and has a nice year like Gallardo or Lincecum did last year (and he'll be in his 2nd year, so I would expect improvement). I could say Kennedy is serviceable; in his few starts last year, he pitched very well. I could say Wang and Pettite do what they did last year. I could say Joba could pitch worse than he did in the bullpen last year as a starter and still be pretty good. I could also say that whoever we throw out there will be better than Clippard, Igawa, DeSalvo, etc.
I happen to like the Yankees rotation, you are rellying on some kids but regardless of what Shade said Wang is a good pitcher. He very rarely is going to kill you. Moose sucks but with the youth movement there may be some bumps along the way but to say this years rotation is better than last years is crazy simply because you are basing opinions on potential. I'd be cool if yo guys said has the potential to be better because it does have the potential to be alot better but surely rooting intrests are coming into play with the statements being made. As far as the Mets rotation I'm not gonna fall into the trap, Santana is a huge upgrade over Tom Gutless but Maine and Perez have to do it more than 1 year to have my vote of confidence. I have no faith in El Duque and Pedro needs to be healthy.
Last year's rotation was awful though... I just think that they're good enough prospects that even if they don't pitch up to their potential, we'll still have as good if not a better rotation than we had last season.
Lets be serious about one thing, your rotation will be better but your bullpen outside from Rivera (and he is getting up there in age) is hideous, and that may end up preventing you from having Joba starting all year. And since they are young guys no matter how good they are next year, they are basically 6 inning pitchers considering their development so your bullpen will be nearly as important as your rotation.
yeah i think everyone here can agree that the yanks bullpen will suck donkey balls. the best we can hope for is that one of the following has a breakout season: veras, ohlendorf, bruney, britton, edwar ramirez. it is possible but the outlook is not good.
The Yanks rotation is clearly in much better shape than it was last year. I wouldn't worry about the rotation being worse, I would worry about guys like Posada not putting up the same kind of numbers he did last year, or even A-Rod for that matter (not saying he's going to lay an egg, but I dont know if we'll see the monster numbers from him that we did last year). The same can be said for David Wright, but you can only assume Reyes isnt going to crap out like he did last season. My point is, both teams look pretty damn good on paper. As long as everyone stays healthy, both teams should make the playoffs. I don't see Wang or Santana getting injured, Pettite and Martinez are both iffy I would think (Pedro more so than Pettite) and the kids Hughes and Kennedy have more potential than Maine and Perez however Maine and Perez have more experience than the others. If Chamberlain is in the bullpen, and Rivera can be decent to good, the Yanks pen should be fine. If Sanchez comes back for the Mets and is in 2006 form, look for their bullpen to be good also. Gun to MY head, question: who's the better team? Pull the trigger.
thank you for understanding, this forum has been dead for months and i have been dying to talk baseball about the mets yanks or whoever
I can't believe how stupid some people can be... Mets fans there's no reason to rub this in the Yankee fans faces, and the Yankees fans need to get the tampons out of their asses and poking their nose into everything. Just because you were in the sweepstakes doesn't give you the right to come in here and say "oh yea the rotation is fine and much better off with Hughes and Kennedy." Go make your own damn thread. Johan Santana is a Met. They made a fantastic deal and now have one of the best rotations in the NL, if not baseball. But instead we all have to make each other look like crap. Grow the hell up.
all the yankees young pitchers are surefire 1st ballot hall of famers thats a fact Joba - HOF Kennedy - HOF Huges - HOF why give up any one of those 3 HOF players for 1 *potential* HOF whos close to 30? The yankees did the right thing, holding on to their young surefire dominating talent.
Nobody proclaimed that. Mets fans are funny. they attack the yankees for giving up young talent for 1 player and then criticize them for not spending...while in the same breath pointing out the Yankees payroll
