This is an unbelievable deal for the Mets, if they gave up their top prospect in Martinez in addition to the package they gave up I would have thought so as well. To keep him and get the best pitcher in the prime of his career, unbelievable.

This makes up for the Milledge trade for Omar and makes up for the Kazmir trade for the Mets organization. Now they just have to win the WS..

It doesn't matter about Phil Hughes..... all that matters is that the Mets now have the best and most dominating pitcher in baseball.

The Mets will get him signed, that is not even a question. Omar would get run right out of town if he didnt get a deal done. Most likely Santana will get whatever he asks for and it will be worth it..

I was waiting to hear from you on this - you're obviously (and understandably) down on Omar, but I would have been stunned if you had any problem with this trade.

This is obviously a great trade for the Mets, and anyone who thinks the $ in the contract make the slightest difference is IMO crazy (the years, maybe, although I expect that they will swallow hard and go for 6 years if they have to). The reason it is a great trade is NOT because of how it will work out down the line, because nobody knows that, but because they gave up far less than what the market was saying Santana's value was a month ago. The Twins tried to leverage the Yanks and Sox against each other and failed, and the Mets got the benefit. Who'd a thunk it?

    Webb-Haren-Randy Johnson-Doug Davis-Micah Owings

They're second best. RJ is more of an injury risk than Pedro at this point. Davis is a walks machine who throws a lot of innings, Owings is unproven but has good upside.

Seems to be a few sore loser Yankee fans in here trying to make you all sound like whiny crybabies... good trade by the Mets, but the fact that some people think Phil Hughes is so much better then Johan Santana is a bit ridiculous.

that would be some NLCS matchup, but the our offense is much better then Arizona.
    Game 1 Webb/Johan
    Game 2 Haren/Pedro
    Game 3 RJ/Maine
    Game 4 Davis/Owings vs. Perez
    Game 5 Webb/Johan

Funny that Yankees fans, whom brought Roger Clemens back at 57 minus HGH last year seem to indicate that the Mets “overpaid”

Looks like we gave up Gomez, who?, was that the kid from? And never fucking heard of him???

no ones saying you're overpaying, just that its a big contract for a pitcher. clemens was for 1 year.

    Fun fact:

Since 2003, there have been 25 games in which Santana gave up two or less earned runs and didn't get the win. 10 losses and 15 no-decisions. That works out to 5 games a year. Just sayin'.

Santana with a big offense is like that scene in Die Hard when Alan Rickman finds his dead henchman with a note from Bruce Willis. "Now I have a machine gun. Ho-ho-ho."

The bottom line is a Yankee fan should never ever make a comment about any contract the Mets are offering any player. With the Mets moving into a new park in 09 and being legit contenders a huge contract will not cripple the franchise. We're not talking he Pirates here....

yes but giving that kind of contract to a pitcher is different than a position player, there is more of a risk and they are more injury prone. my guess is that this contract will be bigger than the 7 year 126 mill contract zito got.
