Ive liked this kid all season , He's a big guy who can be a great fit for us at Nose Tackle... He's a Beast of a player but he did have a surgery not to long ago i think we can pick em up in the Second Round.
It's a pretty good year for nose tackles. I like Red Bryant. I saw him play a little bit this year and the track record on A&M lineman(Sam Adams, Rocky Bernard, Ty Warren) is pretty good. By the way, how about the descent into nowhere of Frank Chokam? This guy wasn't even invited to the Senior Bowl. Ouch. -X-
He's a third rounder at best at this point. Also wasn't Johnny Jolly an A&M Nose? He had a good year in Green Bay.
I?m not sure about Bryant at NT, i always thought about him at End. 6?5 seems a little too tall to play in the middle. Nagata is a simular player and is used as a DE when Baltimore is in a 34. They prefer 6?0 310lbs Gregg Kelly at NT. And at DE i?m not sure about his passrush skills. our 2nd rounder is too high for him, imo. I?d prefer one of the big WRs in the second and Rubin in the 3rd.
The size specs are for leverage purposes but one of the best Noses ever was Ted Washington at 6'5" 350. If you can maintain your leverage and push the pile you can excel regardless of size. Most taller players have their weight spread out too much and can't get low enough to get a good push when the C/G explodes off the snap. Red seems like a player who is just going to stand there and take it and make it difficult to move him.
i know, some can do it, but there are very few of the tall guys who can play the NT effective. When i think about Mawae shooting out at the snap and team up with a G to move a DT, it?s hard to imagine, how Bryant can hold his ground. I don?t rule it out, thou but i really have doubts, that he could be our solution. As i said, the Ravens CS, who showed, that they know how to put players in the right positions to be most succesfull, play 6?4 340lbs Ngata at DE and 6?0 310lbs Kelly at NT.
I think the idea of a tall guy not being able to play nose tackle is ridiculous. Leverage is only one part of the equation. You've also got to occupy multiple blockers and be able to direct them. A short guy is an asset, but Casey Hamptons are hard to come by. The important thing is how a guy is built, and how stout he is in the lower half. -X-
By the way, Mawae in particular always had terrible trouble with Pat Williams, Sam Adams, and Ted Washington. The guy got mauled by larger defensive tackles. Ngata is only playing that spot because Kelly Gregg is an exception to every rule and a superior nose. You don't draft guys that look like Kelly Gregg to play nose tackle. He got the spot out of desperation and has dominated. Bryant is a very strong kid who, at the end of the day, is 330 pounds. If a guard and a center are forced to attempt to move him for four quarters, then I think we'll be very successful. I don't think that's a simple task. -X-
If he's 6'5", how tall is the kid he got in a fight with at the senior bowl. That o-lineman looked a lot taller than Bryant.
I saw the fight in queestion and had the opposite reaction. I thought Red was just a beast bearing down on a little lamb. Slapping him around at will. I like him and liked his nastiness in the game, but I didn't feel like he made that much of a difference on too many plays. But it's hard to tell.
The little I saw of him was in there last bowl game & honestly....he didn't impress me. But hey, Jets' need somebody big & the more big bodies that they can get ...the better. Whereas Okam looked better to me in his bowl game & displays more hustle. Won't fuss if Jets' get one of them.
Red was definitely winning the fight - it was nothing but a flury of lefts and rights. You're right about the other guy being smaller. Found it in another article. This guy is 6'3": http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/01/22/risers.sliders2/index.html Red Bryant/DT/Texas A&M: Bryant was near dominant all afternoon, collapsing the pocket and driving blockers off the line. His main opponent during practice, center Kory Lichtensteiger of Bowling Green, was so frustrated he resorted to fisticuffs at one point
