Jets' have been anchored to the bottom of the league offensively for the past few years, so its' no coincidence that they have problems scoring in the "RedZone" & rank near the bottom league-wide. The effects of this is being addresed by the Jets' with the hiring of Bill Callahan, to help with the offense. Hopefully this can help. OL has to be addressed. A breakaway RB helps, but 3-4 yds & a cloud of dust will create 1st downs. A "bigger" {6'7" 275lbs TE Cottam-Univ. of Tennessee} better blocking TE can only help the offense. Jets' need 2 new Guards & a RT. IMO...4-get the sexy picks & focus on the real offensive needs...which are up front. A big WR will also help. Jets' defense is in the middle of the pack & thats' why they are able to improve after there "bye-weeks", whereas the Jets' offense doesn't improve after the "byeweeks" because the OL talent.... just ain't there. Clearly a NT, OLB & bigger DE's are needed. Another CB would be the crowning pieces. That "Cromarte" brother sounds like an interesting choice....IMO. Jets' actually regressed last year offensively & there record was the end results of that. They were in alot of the games they lost. But the real regression was that the Jets' {unless Bender pans out} didn't really add a starter {upgrade} to there weak OL... whether thru draft or F.A. They need to add a starter or potential starter every off-season. The Jets' are actually only 2/5ths of a NFL caliber OL & if I include the TE position...there still only 2/6ths of an OL. Baker is only good at pass catching....he is small 'at point of attack'. So I say...save all the bells & whistles for next off-season & focus on getting all the "nuts & bolts" first on both sides of the ball.
I still think you are being optimistic at the prospect of just adding nuts and bolts next offseason. This team is broken. Not only is the D still transitioning , now the O is worse than the D , which is saying something. Manginis first year was a nice surprise , and not many people predicited anything from this season , but the step back we have taken is huge and its going to take a herculean effort from Mangini and his CS to get it right , or people will be calling for his head.
This team is a mess on both sides of the ball. only half the players out of our Front 7 are suited to the system, and on our secondary, we got 2 very good players, and 8 below average. 60% our O-Line is horrible. We don?t have a QB, a #3 WR or a capeable starter for the FB/HB/2ndTE spot. We have a RB who has at best 2 years left, and anotherone ,who will never be more than a 3rd down back. At least we got 5-6 very good young player, where we can build around.
Spot on  I would say that our #1 WR is on his way out as well. LC took a right beating last season.
I reckon its going to be more like a minimum of 2 years before we can even compete at the top end of the league. Hopefully this will coincide with the demise of the Pats. He He I have the same retro Namath jersey as Mr T , I look so much better in mine though
THe 'nuts & bolts' are for this season.{Nuts & bolts are the OL & DL, not the playmakers}. Offense has always been worse than there D.
Agreed...Barring a miracle, Jets' are 2 off-seasons away from being contenders....If they address there OL & DL first.
The biggest issue I see is that the team hasn't been able to make the "skilled" position players more effective last year. Granted that the Free Agent class for OL's last year was relatively weak, the Kendall fiasco just wasn't resolved in a satisfactory manner. The $1 million difference towards the cap that both parties fought publicly over was the difference between making the playoffs and picking early in the draft. I don't necessarily agree that there are way too many position that needs upgrading in the team for the Jets to be in contention next year. I think the offense, particularly a heady play-action QB like Penny, would be much more effective if the running game is given a chance to blossom and the QB is given more time to throw. I believe that we already have the horses in Jones, Washington, Coles, Cotchery and Baker. Give them holes to run through and time for the QB to make his throws and these guys can deliver as history has shown. I don't think that this curent regime should have the patience or the willingness to gamble on upgrading the Offensive Line through the draft. Their heads would definitely be on the block if a fail to deliver next year. The best way is to go out there and pay PROVEN performers like Faneca, Gross and Andrews. Performance and longevity considered, Offensive Linemen have consistently proven to be better free agent pick-ups than defensive or skilled players. That being said, I think we're in good position in the draft to get some impact players like Gholston, Red Bryant or another defensive difference-makers. And if for some odd and miraculous reason, Chris Long is acquired in the first round and another stud like Harvey or Bryant is available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, then look for the Defense to really start making some noise. I can definitely see the Offense quickly regaining its effectiveness level of 2006. Couple that we a Defense that can stop people, then anything can happen..........case in point - NY Giants.
The reason Jets' weren't able to make skill positions more effective...was OL was too weak & thats where it all starts. Jets' offense (according to NFL.com stats) has ranked near bottom of league for past several years. I contribute that to a inferior OL. Notice, when Brandon Moore was a back-up, none of these present day Offensive linemen were even on the team. Jets' OL has been in transition for several years now. First losing Randy Thomas & then llosing McKenzie. See....they lost there Center Mawae & there whole right side of OL{THomas & McKenzie}.....lol:drunk: It just gets funnier...but really sad:sad:
