Well here's the first one. It's very realistic and doesn't include any trades. I have a feeling some may not like it, but I would damn satisfied if this is how the Jets' offseason went down... RESIGNINGS WR Wallace Wright – 1 year QB Marques Tuiasosopo – 1 year LB Brad Kassell – 1 year OL Wade Smith – 3 years CB Hank Poteat – 3 years HB Joe Kowalewski – 1 year S Abram Elam – 2 years - Wallace Wright has been a special teams standout and that alone should warrant a contract. Tui is an experienced and mobile veteran who has been in the system for a year. Poteat and Elam played exceptionally well especially considering the expectations many had when they were signed. They both were part of a Top 10 NFL secondary and should return. Wade Smith is a versatile lineman that has played all three positions throughout his career. Kowalewski gets a shot to be the team’s halfback and tight end and keep his role from last season. RELEASES LB Matt Chatham OG Adrien Clarke CB Andre Dyson CB Justin Miller WR Justin McCareins - Chatham is a major liability on defense and this team has better special teamers. Andre Dyson was MIA for much of the season and apparently ended up in Eric Mangini’s doghouse. With the play of Poteat and Revis, Dyson is expendable. Justin McCareins straight out lost two games for the Jets and is a lock to get released. Clarke looked so bad at times this season that Carolina cast out Will Montgomery stepped in and looked good compared to Clarke. He doesn’t even deserve a roster spot. FREE AGENT SIGNINGS Samie Parker, WR, 27, Kansas City Chiefs Sean Locklear, RT, 26, Seattle Seahawks Drayton Florence, CB, 27, San Diego Chargers Ben Troupe, TE, 25, Tennessee Titans Eugene Amano, OG, 26, Tennessee Titans - Samie Parker is a speedy wide receiver that can stretch the field and is an ideal slot WR. Sean Locklear is a young up-and coming player that has started for a couple of seasons in Seattle and might be let go due to the depth of the Seahawk line. Part of a play-making secondary in 2007, Drayton Florence should form a nice complement opposite Darrelle Revis. Ben Troupe lost his starting job to Bo Scafie, but he’s still young and is an athletic receiver as well as a solid blocker. Eugene Amano is a depth or insurance guy and has developed on the Tennessee Titans for a few seasons. If Schuening isn’t ready to step right in, Amano or Montgomery will. DRAFT 1. Vernon Gholston, OLB/DE, Ohio St 2. Roy Schuening, OG, Oregon St 3. Trevor Laws, DE/DT, Notre Dame 4. Ahtyba Rubin, NT, Iowa St 5. Tashard Choice, RB, Georgia Tech 6. Bruce Davis, OLB/DE, UCLA 7. Eric Wicks, S, West Virginia - Gholston is the obvious choice since this team needs play-makers, especially at OLB. If not Gholston, consider Kenny Phillips, the next of elite safeties from The U. Schuening a reach?... Many will say so, but with the RT position being shored up in free agency, the LG spot is glaring and Schuening seems like the type of guy Mangini likes. Maybe he’s our Logan Mankins? Trevor Laws might have been the MVP of Notre Dame recording over 100 tackles from the DT spot and effectively rushing the passer as well. Rubin might not be there in the 4th, but if so, he’s certainly worth a shot. Tashard Choice makes it to the 5th round due to the high supply of RBs in the draft and free agency. He has nearly of the characteristics that are looked for in a starting RB. Bruce Davis, a DE at UCLA, will likely move to OLB in the pros and did so effectively at the Senior Bowl. Eric Wicks was a playmaker on the West Virginia defense and is worth a flyer in the seventh. DEPTH CHART QB: Kellen Clemens | Chad Pennington | Marques Tuiasosopo | Brett Ratliff RB: Thomas Jones | Leon Washington | Tashard Choice | Alvin Banks FB/HB: Ben Troupe | Joe Kowalewski WR: Laveranues Coles | Jericho Cotchery | Samie Parker | Brad Smith |Chansi Stuckey | Wallace Wright TE: Chris Baker | Ben Troupe | Joe Kowalewski | James Dearth LT: D’Brickashaw Ferguson | Clint Oldenburg LG: Roy Schuening | Eugene Amano C: Nick Mangold | Wade Smith RG: Brandon Moore | Jacob Bender RT: Sean Locklear | Anthony Clement DE: Shaun Ellis | Kenyon Coleman | Dewayne Robertson | Trevor Laws | CJ Mosley NT: Sione Pouha | Ahtyba Rubin | Dewayne Robertson OLB: Bryant Thomas | Vernon Gholston | David Bowens | Bruce Davis | Marques Murrell | Jason Trusnik ILB: Jonathan Vilma | David Harris | Eric Barton | Brad Kassell | Jerry Mackey CB: Darrelle Revis | Drayton Florence | Hank Poteat | David Barrett | Drew Coleman FS: Abram Elam | Eric Smith | Eric Wicks SS: Kerry Rhodes | Eric Smith | Eric Wicks K: Mike Nugent P: Ben Graham | Jeremy Kapinos - Of course, there are cuts to be made and depth charts to be re-ordered, but I'll leave all the potential players around. This trusts Sione Pouha to step in and play as well as he did at season's end, as Mangini also thought. Well, let me hear plenty of feedback! Comments, questions, praises, criticism are appreciated. Thanks for reading.
I'm still not ready to give up on Justin Miller, but I will disown the Jets if McCariens is back next year.
Ouch, the first eyebrow lifter was the depth at CB, releasing Miller and Dyson and adding Florence IMO is not a good idea. I think Miller will be back , although he seems as dumb as an ox , he is a good return man and can still play in the nickel/dime packages. Dyson whilst unspectacular is still a solid veteran. I would still like to see at least another 2 DBs bought in to compete though, wheather that be through the draft or waivers. Secondary is not a real pressing need. We need a new punter, desperatley. Although I love Benny to pieces , he made some absolute howlers last season , that basically dropped us in the poop. We should take a punter first round  The draft looks pretty good to me , but I'm not a Gholsten fan. If Branden Albert was there, I would take him over Schuening as well.
The only changes I would make --- Justin Miller cant be released. His contract for 2008 is a measley $460k. He'll be a free agent in 2009, let him go at that point. Dont like the Trevor Laws pick. Another undersized guy who doesnt fit the 3-4 D. He is 6-0 297. This draft goes deep into the end of the 3rd round w/possible starting rookies. Change that pick to a Beau Bell ILB because Barton is a Free Agent after this upcoming 2008 season. Or a Kendall Langford DE (when he puts weight back on). Or a WR like Andre Caldwell.
I like the mock. I like trevor Law I don't care about his size, he has the motor and has the technique. I love Gholston if you couldn't tell as well. I am also living in Philly right now and was wondering where you watch the games. I live in manayunk.
He had a couple of rough plays, but for the most part he was a solid player and a big-time hitter. The play of Kerry Rhodes improved when Elam started playing at FS. It will be either him or Eric Smtih. I considered signing Eugene Wilson from New England, but decided not to. If Gholston is not around at #6, I would be all for Kenny Phillips though. As for Brad Smith, why give up now? He's made progress and he's only the 4th guy now. Samie Parker would likely be the slot reciever. As for Miller, maybe I should keep him around. I was not aware of how low his salary is for 2008. He might make the cuts in the next mock I do, whenever that may be. Trevor Laws doesn't fit the 3-4 defense? He had a breakout senior season at Notre Dame, which played the 3-4 this past season, making over 100 tackles PLAYING DE in that 3-4. If anything, he's a good fit for that position. And I don't live in Philly.
I respect your mock and opinion. I did a mock offseason & it took me forever. But I disagree that playing the 3-4 in college automatically makes you a good 3-4 prospect for the pros. Look at Chris Long --- dominated the DE position in a 3-4 in college and there are a ton of posters here on this website who do not believe he could play well in a 3-4 in the pros. Its all about size - period. 3-4 DEs need size 6'3" + but they also need 305lbs+. Maybe I am splitting hairs, but I just do not think that the JETS D is in a position of luxury in taking a possibly undersized player who MAY work out in a 3-4 D.
I wouldn't say he's undersized. Does it really make a big difference if he's 6-1 and not 6-3? Personally I don't think so, but that's my opinion, not a true fact. Kenyon Coleman is under 300 pounds, but is 6-5 or 6-6. Shaun Ellis is about the same height and weighs even less. Personally, I believe a player needs relatively good size to play in the 3-4 (Or anywhere for that matter), but more importantly needs certain characteristics. For a 3-4 DE, this includes strength and power as two of the more important qualities, both of which Laws has. He weighs in around 295-300. Is this difference of a couple pounds and a couple inches really that big of a deal considering he has the skill set to be a potential 3-4 DE in the NFL?
My friend, you illustrate my point perfectly --- I think that Ellis & K. Coleman are undersized to begin with. IMO, it does make a difference because I watched us consistently getting pushed off the line of scrimmage. There is another post in the forum talking about the 3-4 movement & size is the major topic of discussion. I like the Rubin draft pick you made -- the guy is 325! Jason Ferguson is literally the last BIG DT or DE we drafted in the last 10 yrs. My point is My friend, you illustrate my point perfectly --- I think that Ellis & K. I would prefer we pass on that one. Call me crazy, but its also my opinion that we pass on Dorsey & Ellis as well. I think they would make great 4-3 DTS, but not a 3-4 DE.
Okay, fair enough. I don't think that many other 3-4 DEs of the NFL are that much smaller than Coleman, Ellis. They are a few pounds too light, but nothing significant IMO. Strength also has a lot to do with it IMO. Also, what about Sione Pouha? He's about the same size as Rubin. I believe he could be this team's NT.
I can't speak much about the draft but some questions I have: Where is Erik Coleman? Why Andre Dyson instead of Barrett? Why give up on Miller at a reasonable contract? Hobson is gone? Are Chad/Kellen going to battle? Your not signing a true FB? Comments: I love the Troupe signing with how much 2 TE stuff we do, and I think you could do better than Samie Parker at WR. The rest of the free-agents I don't know much about. Sadly if I were to look I would be using Madden as my reference guide >__>
Ferguson was only listed at about 305, 310 at most. Theres more to being a NT than the reading on the scale.
Erik Coleman is a free agent and was not resigned. Andre Dyson didn't even see the field after the first couple of weeks while Barrett did. Clearly the team thought very lowly of Dyson. I will keep Miller in my next mock. It is reasonable. Victor Hobson is a free agent not expected back. There will be a QB battle I'm sure. As I said, the depth chart is not official. It's more like a roster I suppose. No true FB. This team uses a HB/2-TE sets. What's wrong with Parker? And who is so much better? I doubt Bryant Johnson will be around looking for another slot job.
I have a gut feeling Dyson was hiding or had some type of lingering foot injury that hampered him all year, a guy just doesn't lose it that quickly, but I could be wrong. I'm hoping for a comeback year for him next season. I knew Hobson was leaving but I didn't realize Coleman's contract is up. I don't know much about Parker to be quite honest.
I believe you are right. I liked Sione Pouha's play at lot in the 2nd half of the season. Was very pleasantly surprised. I have no idea how durable he is - there are not many NTs who could play an entire game anyway. He looked real good in a rotation which I would prefer. I hear you about the strength point ---- and let me say I've never read anything about Ellis or K. Coleman being strong.
I meant people are saying D-Rod is too small at 315, meanwhile you are calling Ferguson a Big DT, and Jamal Williams of the chargers is on the of the best in football and he is only listed at 305. Weight isn't everything, yeah it helps but there is no reason Dwayne can't be effective solely because he is too small.
I know it wasnt that long ago he was drafted in 1997, but Jason Ferguson was considered big/perfect size at 305lbs compared to the DTs + NTs back then. And absolutely NO WAY is Jamal Williams of the SD Chargers only 305 lbs. He is 340+ lbs ----- the guy is huge. Unfortunately it does look like D-Rob is too small at 317lbs (believe it or not) to play the NT position. The guy playing NT has it pretty tough - he takes on a double team for practically the entire game. The NT has to be physically immoveable --- Ted Washington comes to mind -- the center just cant take on Washington 1 on 1 & move him out of the way. I think D-Rob's problem is that his arms are too short.
