http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d8064624a Mayock reckons Ellis is a top 5 pick , which could start to shake the order up if hes right. I really didn't realise exactly how big and fast this guy is. hmy:
That's why I tabbed Ellis at #6 in that recent mock, IMO he's an elite prospect in this draft, "TIER 1" with McFadden, Dorsey and the Long's .. after that its a dropoff to TIER 2, including Gholston JMO PS. Obviously I agree with Mayock's "TOP 5" comment and I suspect you'll start to see that reflected in a number of mocks, perhaps with Ellis projected to the Raiders
here's the thing about those highlights. On every sack, he was one on one, which u dont get often in a 3-4 DE position. He has to prove that he can really take on two guys to show his potential in a 3-4 system. He is an unbelievable guy as a 4-3 one gap guy, but based on those highlights (and mind you, that is the only action i've seen out of ellis) he doesn't seem to fit that well as a 3-4 DL.
The whole point of a 3-4 linemen is to occupy blockers and stop the run, if they have the opportunity to get a sack they obviously take it but they usually leave that to the linebackers. He would also play NT before he played 3-4 End
He's too short to play 3-4 end, and if the Jets were to draft Ellis and try to pitch him to me as a nose tackle, I'd simply quit paying attention. Ellis' greatest asset is his quickness, not his strength. His ability to take advantage of the one on one situation with his combination of the two is incredible, but it's more because 300 pound men aren't supposed to move like that. If I'm Mangini and Co. I realize that I already have a similar player in Dewayne Robertson and I look to fill my line with similarly strong men of a much larger stature. -X-
If I'm Mangini I draft Ellis and switch to a base 43 defense with Robertson and Ellis inside, but that's because I'm not wedded to the 34 like Mangini apparently is having been weened under BB and the Pats I think somebody needs to send Mangini some tape of the Steel Curtain, Fearsome Foursome, Doomsday, 85 Bears, Sack Exchange, Buddy Ryan's Eagles, etc .. Just to show him the Pats didn't invent dominant defense, there were some pretty dominant front fours long before the Pats started this run
You really can't say if he could play 3-4 NT from watching this video. He has the right height but would need to add some weight. It's very rare you'll find a guy come out of college who you know can play 3-4 nose in the nfl. You look for a guy who is under 6'3" at least 315+ and has a rare athletic ability for a guy that size. Wilfork is probably 370 now and he wasn't anywhere near that size when he was drafted. The bottom line is that the jets need defensive lineman badly so if Dorsey or Ellis make it to 6 they have to consider taking them.
I think next year they will be much more flexible on their defensive fronts from day one. No more of this 3-4 2 gap no matter what. They just don't have the front 7 players for it. That 4-3 would be very interesting Barton, Vilma and Harris at LB with Ellis, Robertson and Ellis on the line. They would have have to find a real pass rushing RE. I think at this point they just need to add quality defensive lineman.
The 3-4 is all he knows, if he ran a 4-3 he would have no idea what he was doing and the defense would be even worse.
Its madening , say we draft Ellis and do as you say , we are a much better 43 than 34 right there but an awkward 34 hybrid. So far I can't say we have ever exclusively played 34 D yet. I don't know if Sutton is a 43 guy or not and I'm sure Mangini could adapt quicker than changing our whole D personell, If Sutton isn't my feeling is that we should just be done with the whole 34 'experiment' and revert back to what works. With this draft and our status in it we have a good chance to make a very good 43 , will Mangini have the balls though?
The problem is that 4-3 or 3-4 we don't have that dominant pass rusher. Neither defense works without one. I still see them playing more of a 3-4 one gap hybrid next year. My hope is that they sign Sean Locklear to play RT and Jacob Bell to play LG. Then we somehow wind up with Sedrick Ellis in the first and Shawn Crable in the 2nd. That would be ideal in my eyes but I'm sure it won't happen.
Personally - I think Ellis will have a better NFL career than Gholston , and it wont be with the Jets.
Looking at him some more , I think he would have no problem playing either NT/DT in the 34. Take into consideration that hes still young and will bulk up and has incredible speed , I think he would make a good 34 NT , he would certainly fit last years system with DRob alongside. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDMyrBU6PJg
