    I fixed your post.

... I'm a Yankees and Jets fan. (I only follow MLB and NFL). My dad is a Mets/Jets fan, so it's nice to have that friendly feud during the baseball season, but when it comes to football, it's all love.

Dude, I like that. Great way to sum up the similarities between MLB, and NFL according to New york city teams. You described it better than I could.:up::up:

    Jets, Mets, Red Wings.

My grandparents used to have season tickets to the AHL affiliate of the Red Wings in Glens Falls so I ended up rooting for them.

Jets, Yankees, Capitals for me. The Wizards in the NBA, but the NBA is a lost sport. haha. Great thread by the way. I like the post about Jets fans cheering for the Giants are Yankees fans too. Probably true. I hate the Red Sox and I would much rather listen to Giants fan brag about a title than listening to another Boston fan.

    It's usually Yanks/Giants/Rangers, Mets/Jets/Islanders.

I'm Yanks/Jets/Rangers, but the Giants are the only "other" NY team that I like and openly root for, so I'm pretty close to the first.

The Mets/Jets connection has to do with your age and the origin of the teams. Both teams came into existence around the same time, were from the same geographic area, and played in the same stadium.

Division rivals are irrelevant. The huge majority of Jet fans who started following sports in the 1960s and 70s are Met fans. The Jet/Yankee fan is more likely young and started following the Yankees in the mid to late 1990s. Jet and Met fans were from the Queens/Long Island area. That changed when the Jets moved to NJ and the Jets attracted more NJ fans (NJ fans now make up the majority of Jet fans according to a poll the Jets took when the WSS was being considered).

People forget that before the Yankees went on this 12 year run, NY was a National League town (as a result of there being two NL teams - the Dodgers and the Giants -in the area in baseball's glory days of the 1950's). Most of those NL fans became Met fans when the Mets came into existence. No self-respecting former Dodger or Giant fan would ever root for the Yankees. And the Mets, not the Yankees, owned the city in the late 60s and early 70s and again in the late 1980s.

Jets/Mets right here... I think the underdog, lesser (historically) teams pair together well...

Jets because I enjoyed watching them more growing up, and figured out at an early age that I couldn't stand Giants fans.

This hated of the less successful same city rival is the exact same attitude Giants fans have towards Jets fans. Their attitude seems to be, "You're never going to be NYC's team. We're always going to be #1. You're always going to be second class citizens." Of course, they're not all like this, but a lot of Yankees fan I know like to remind me how many championships they've won, and a lot of Giants fans like to remind me that we play in their stadium.

The Giants and Yankees are both the older, more sucessful, well-established NY teams, whereas the Mets and Jets are the younger, less successful NY teams, so I think it's very natural to be a Mets/Jets fan, and a Yankees/Giants fan. This is also the case with the vast majority of the people I know. I know one Giants/Mets fan (most likely because of 86), but no Yankee/Jets fans outside of this board. Me personally, I decided on the Mets and Jets because they are the less successful underdogs. All other things being equal, I will typically root for the underdog.

I agree with some of the stuff you've said, but as far as the Yankees/Jets connection that started long before the Mid 90's. In the mid to late 70's There was still a little Jets/Namath fever, and the Giants were still not as big as today do to no superbowl victories. Then along came the yankees with there trips to the World series in '76,'77,78,and '81, they won 2 out of 4 and until '86 NYC was a solid yankee town, with Reggie fever. Hence the Yanks/Jets connection. I believe it also has to do with region, for example: in my Particular neighborhood in uptown manhattan most fans were Yankees/Jets/Knicks/and Islanders. And here in south FLa. most jets fans are yanks fans. I guess after reading some of the comments on this thread it all has to do with age, region, and family tradition.
