Does anyone have any ideas whos available or who would be a good fit? edit; 132 reads....no reply. I guess thats a no then. Shame as ST played a big part in our season
pasquale or even look at shifting sutton over there. it's not like the jets don't have a copy of westhoff's playbook.
I'm not so sure keeping Sutton around would be a good idea as that could be viewed by the players as a demotion. There's got to be someone else out there with a decent resume to fill this position....
who the heck knows that is unfortunately one of the coaching positions most overlooked by fans. There is only 1 ST coach that I know, and that is Westoff. He is the best, and now he is gone, so since no one actually follows ST coaches, like DC's and OC's and HC's we have no clue what is out there.
Westhoff is the best that has ever done it as a special Teams coach. There is no replacement just a successor.
Seriously fellas, I'm concerned about this. No one is ever irreplaceable, but I don't know if we've got anyone on our staff that even comes close. I don't think Westhoff groomed anyone for the takeover and he's always been a one-man band... almost a loner in terms of his style. I have never seen anyone... an assistant or whatever... that brings the same energy to TC that he has brought. My only disappointment is that neither Westhoff nor the current CS has made provisions for his replacement and you'd be hard-pressed to find his clone. My best hope is that he gets his health back and returns within a short period of time... possibly as early as TC of '09.
Who is Westhoffs assistant? There must be someone who has been by his side, basked in the knowledge and most of all has copy of his playbook.
he must have had an assistant. Lets just keep his playbook and keep implementing the things he was doing and maybe in a couple of years when we have have less problems we can we start looking for a special teams protege.
If it was easy as that I'd do the job. What made Westy so good was his ability to adjust and exploit others teams weakness', on top of being a very good motivational speaker.
Honestly, I've never noticed anyone else running around with the STs at Training Camp. He was quite noticable... hobbling around, barking, getting after players, patting them on the back when they did good and chewing them out when they hadn't listened to what he had told them. Perhaps he was so noticable that I just never saw anyone else assisting him, but even if there had been (or if there is an assistant we don't know about) it's obvious such a person would only be a shadow of the man himself. Westhoff will be sorely missed by Mangini and all of us fans. I only hope he can get through the "personal issues" (I suspect it's joint or hip replacement) and that we keep a spot open for his return in '09. He won't have trouble finding a job if he wants to get back into the NFL.
How about.... Scott O'Brien Denver Broncos STs Special Teams Coordinator; born June 25, 1957, Superior, Wis. Linebacker Wisconsin-Superior 1975-78. No pro playing experience. College coach: Wisconsin-Superior 1980-82, Nevada-Las Vegas 1983-85, Rice 1986, Pittsburgh 1987-1990. Thinking about this today, there is one other possibility going on regarding Westhoff. He never gave a timetable for when (or if) he would return... maybe that hinges on what doctors tell him, I don't know (just speculating), but could it be possible that the Jets have left the door open for his return and this explains why we haven't heard about an immediate replacement hiring? Suppose the CS has someone who can fill in for Westhoff and they value Westhoff (which I think they do) and want him back? I suppose we could get by with an assistant coach (like Callahan, for example) riding herd over STs with someone else for the next year, until Westhoff's surgery and recovery allow him to return. This actually wouldn't be a bad idea if Westhoff wants to... you keep him on some sort of interim advisory payroll and allow him to draw some kind of paycheck while waiting the year out for him to come back to his regular coaching position. He stays on the insurance as well and covers all his medical bills while drawing a small paycheck.
Th announcement at the end of the season was pretty concise. Doesn't sound like he will be coming back anytime soon. Rehab is pretty gruelling too and at his age.
Well I suppose this Westys assistant............ http://jets.lohudblogs.com/2007/03/13/the-more-the-merrier/
