According to Nfldraftcountdown.com, the NYJ brass have been observing: DeJuan Tribble, Gosder Cherilus and Matt Forte on Tuesday.

    Thoughts?

Cherilus and Forte I could see. Tribble? Why? Poteat has been amazing for his price.

Chris Carter all he does is catch TD's.... (Buddy Ryan's pearl of wisdom)
DeJuan Tribble all he does is Intercept and defend the ball....He has to be given a look for a second day pick.

I'd absolutely love Cherilus as out RT of the future in the 2nd if we can grab him and I think Forte could be pretty damn good as an all-around FB, like a poor man's Brian Leonard. I also wouldn't mind giving Tribble a look later in the draft as we still need some depth at the position, although if we sign someone like Gay I don't think it'd be too wise to use another pick on a CB unless if value screams otherwise.

EDIT: On further thought, I think a Gholston-Cherilus first 2 rounds would be pretty damn incredible, addressing 2 major needs with 2 potential impact guys.

I would think that Cherlius would be gone by the beginning of the 2nd round. Long, Clady, Otah, and Cherlius might all be gone in fact.

Cherlius' inability to play LT will probably hurt his stock and could very well fall to the second, but who knows.

i feel like i should chime in here (i actually live in the same room as Cherilus did last year). Gosder definitely has the size and ability to be a very good NFL Tackle. He was a beast at RT last year but seemed to struggle alot at LT this year. Alot of this i feel was mental as there were alot of holding and false starts against him. At RT w/ our 2nd pick i would absolutely love to have him.
Tribble will be a great value if he goes where he is projected (i've seen everywhere from late 2nd to early 4th). He's a solid cover corner that is very agressive. Makes big plays that make you say wow but occasionally whiffs. Also been hurt for a solid part of the season.
    Just my 2 cents

Poteat has done a very nice job, but it's important to remember that he is 30. Also in today's NFL, there are enough 3 and 4 wide receiver sets that you need 3 starting caliber corners IMO.

Here's more players the Jets have spoken with....

01:31AM - Jets Eye A Few At Senior Bowl
Thursday, January 24th, 2008 by Gary Grund

Scott Wright at the NFLDraftCountdown has noted that the Jets have been checking out a couple of prospects at the Senior Bowl. I will give a quick recap for each player just to get a few notes on them.

RB - Dantrell Savage - Oklahoma St.
    Projected: Mid-Round Pick
Notes: Very similar in terms of size with Jets RB Leon Washington. Projects to be a situational or third-down back as well as a return man in the NFL.

RB - Matt Forte - Tulane
    Projected: Mid-Round Pick
Notes: Rushed for 2,127 yards on 361 attempts with 23 touchdowns for the Tulane Green Wave in his senior season.

TE - Martin Rucker - Missouri
    Projected: 2nd or 3rd Rounder
Notes: Brother to Carolina Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker. Basically a “wideout in a tight end’s body.”

OT - Mike McGlynn - Pittsburgh
    Projected: 4th or 5th Rounder
Notes: Started for four years for the Pittsburgh Panthers at right tackle. Also served as the team’s long snapper on field goals and extra points.

OT - Gosder Cherilus - Boston College
    Projected: 2nd Rounder
Notes: Started 37 consecutive games at right tackle but he moved to the left side as a senior. Had a run in with the law being charged with assault and battery in July of 2007 in connection with a bar fight.

NT - Ahtyba Rubin - Iowa St.
    Projected: 4th or 5th Rounder
Notes: Potential sleeper, able to two-gap and hold up strong. Massive big body, but in good shape. Could quietly move into the 3rd round.

CB - DeJuan Tribble - Boston College
    Projected: Mid-Round Pick
Notes: Projects to be at best a nickel or dime cornerback. He was involved with Gosder Cherilus in the July 2007 bar fight, charged with assault & battery.

    CB - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - Tennessee St.
    Projected: Mid-Round Pick
Notes: The brother of Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who led the NFL with 10 interceptions this season. Projects to be one of the best sleeper prospects in the draft. He is also an excellent kick returner.

Thanks to many different draft sites for the information including NFL Draft Scout, NFLDraftCountdown and the Great Blue North Draft Report

I love both Cherilus and McGlynn. Just nasty nasty battlers. You can't go wrong with those types. You could take both of them, rebuild the talent and the attitude of the entire OL and still keep your first rounder. Tribble seems to just get beat at the senior bowl, but the announcers keep saying he's a football player, he's a football player, and we know that counts for something with the FO. Ahtyba Rubin is my second favorite DL pick after Red Bryant, so I wouldn't be too upset there. As for the rest, unless we get a game changer at RB/WR/TE (i.e.: first rounder), I don't think we need more depth or developmental projects who flash talent and just need to be molded, we've alreeady got a bunch of those players.

I totally agree I would be very happy to see those two in green and those needs met.

The players I see them scouting makes me think they know exactly what they're doing.

Someone referred to Forte as a poor man's Brian Leonard. I disagree. I think Forte is probably better than Leonard, who didn't really get much run once Ray Rice stepped in. Everything I've read about him seems like he's much more than just a guy who overachieved against a low level of competition. I think he's probably going to fly up the boards. I also applaud our decision to look at running backs. You can never have too many, as the Giants have shown.

McGlynn is a gritty swing lineman who looks like he'd respond well to the system we have in place and offer some versatility and toughness. Cherilus is a little smaller than I'd like but he's very experienced and developed and I've liked what I've seen of him this season.

I don't love Tribble, but he might be a very good nickel. He gets his hands on a lot of balls and he seems like he has a good attitude. You can't look at every draft pick like he's going to be a Pro Bowler one day. You need to add guys who can fill a simple role and he seems like he could be one of those guys.

Does anyone have any info on Ahtyba Rubin? I'm always interested in stout lineman. All I've seen regarding this guy is that he's very big and very fit. I'm sure more will come up soon.
