Jan 18 New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum announced Friday, Jan. 18, that the Jets signed free-agent CB Etienne Boulay (CFL). Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bio College career He played for the New Hampshire Wildcats from 2002 to 2005. He played 13 games in 2004, making 65 tackles and intercepting three passes. He also registered 66 tackles and five interceptions in 2005. Montreal Alouettes He was drafted in the second round (16th pick) in the 2006 CFL Draft by the Montreal Alouettes. That season, he finished fifth in the CFL with 20 special teams tackles and won the East Division Most Outstanding Rookie, 2006 and the Alouettes Most Outstanding Rookie, 2006 awards. He is currently the starting safety for the Als.
I know nothing about him, and that said nothing about him. Is he supposed to be a prominent player? a guy who is 6th on the depth chart?
If he can make 65 tackles on the bigger dimensions of the CFL field, logic would dictate he might do well on the smaller NFL field.
If he can make 65 tackles on the CFL field, logic would dictate that he will struggle against bigger, stronger, faster NFL players that actually play in the NFL and didn't have to go play football in Canada.
That's a little harsh isn't it? You now know which college he went to, who he played for in the CFL... all sorts of stuff.
I actually remember seeing this guy play in a couple of BC Lions game against the Al's. He didn't look too bad. Should be a pretty good pickup
What do you mean "you know nothing about him" You can't read? "He was drafted in the second round (16th pick) in the 2006 CFL Draft by the Montreal Alouettes. That season, he finished fifth in the CFL with 20 special teams tackles and won the East Division Most Outstanding Rookie, 2006 and the Alouettes Most Outstanding Rookie, 2006 awards. First of all, those are all quarterbacks. The last I checked, quarterbacks take alot more time to develop than any other position on the field. I can't ever remember a cornerback coming into the league and riding the bench for two years because he needs to develop. Happens all the time with quarterbacks. Hell I may be wrong, but can you name one cornerback that couldn't make the NFL out of college and then went to another league, played there, and then went to the NFL and became a star like Doug Flutie, Warren Moon, and Jeff Garcia. Granted he doesn't have to be a star, he could just be solid, but I'm skeptical.
How tall is Bob Sanders? Oh yeah, he's 5'8. I'm in no way comparing Boulay to Sanders, but height isn't that big of a factor in the NFL. Sanders is barely 5'8 and he won defensive player of the year. Jones-Drew is no taller than 5'7 and he is a great running back. It's not about height, it's about talent.
Sanders=safety Jones-Drew=running back. Neither has to defend one-on-one against wide receivers who have minimum four inches advantage. I know, I know, Ray Mickens was solid 10-plus veteran. And you have two good examples... but I think you're arguing just to argue, sir.
Awesome... when a CFL player joins the NFL and gets cut after TC are they out of a job till another CFL team picks them up? .. and do they get paid for TC? If they don't that's kind of a raw deal.
So sanders = safety This guy is signed as a CB but playing Saftey in the CFL. Not really arguing jsut to argue there. More like providing a fact that you do not have to be tall to play DB in the NFL.
Skill-wise that doesn't tell me much. Maybe I was a bit harsh but can someone answer my question, I really don't know much about the CFL and how that would transfer over, so can someone just tell me how significant they think this signing is?
If this was regular season , I wouldn't have bothered with it , but times are s-l-o-w at the moment. As Champ said , TC Fodder.
