I have to agree here. I think it's interesting that he's going to Pittsburgh, because Pittsburgh almost never makes a mistake on a coach, but it's just clear that he did not do a good job here. It may be that the Jets talent was just so bad that nobody could have succeeded, that would be similar to the Dolphins lines he had also, however you can't argue that his work has been good because every line he has coached has been the biggest weak point of the team.
I think Callahan would be a pretty solid line coach. He had one of the most poisonous locker rooms in sports and he had a tough job in Nebraska. I'm sure he has a lot to prove and he did a good job with the Raiders. I think anyone who's come out of that "organization" deserves a mulligan. -X-
Callahan is a cocky, arrogant jacka**. He was handed a great offense in Oakland from Gruden. Then he bolted for Nebraska where he alienated himself from the team, staff and most of all former players and alumni. Oh by the way, he completely failed at Nebraska and was fired immediately when Tom Osborne came back as AD. No thanks.
That is a really good point. But still. Some stuff just doesn't work. Like, if you were trying to use a drain to hold water.
If hiring Bill Callahan boosts our offense, including the running game, then I am all for it. He is supposedly going to become the offensive line coach, but I read another report that said that he would be hired for an "undisclosed position with the New York Jets" but then goes on to say that it could be a running game coordinator position. That was a little strange, I thought. It will also be interesting to see if Brian Schottenheimer gets a HC position with someone. At any rate, let's have a good draft and improve for 2008-09!
LOL you guys thought Pittsburgh Steelers were going to hire Tony Wise? Tony F-ing Wise???????????? LOL Based on what? ..................................His body of work the last 7 years. Edit: Yes Hobbes your balls needed to be busted over this.
I was responding to a previous poster...And my original comment was "I cant believe Mike Solari is walking the street, and Wise has a job..." which technically is still correct.... It wasnt till i scrolled down...that I saw Pornstache was the culprit...
They aren't going to be specific about it, but that RGC position has been a rumor of bait for a new O-line coach so that's basically what we and I assume most of the articles are basing that on. All we ever get is rumors anyway.
I think we all are in agreement that the best Offensive Line coach in the universe could not fix our current offensive line. I hope the Jets plan is not only to get a new coach but also put some decent FA's on the line too.
I'm not sure I completely agree, a sign of a good coach is to get his players to perform as a unit and to get less than stellar players to hold the fort until better ones can be acquired. What I saw from our O-line a lot of this year was confusion and lack of preparation, and not all of that can be blamed on personnel.
It also could have been Wise that told Mangini, "Clarke will be fine if we get rid of Kendall". The HC has the final say on personnel, but the position coaches do have some input. After seeing what Wise did with Miami's OL, I wasn't happy when he came here, and then to see how much they improved after he left, that speaks volumes. I'm not saying the players shouldn't get plenty of the blame, but coaching is a big part of how an OL performs. More than any other unit on the team IMO. They all have to perform as one, and it was painfully obvious this year that they were far from it.
One thing that the announcers kept mentioning every game is how the Jets offensive linemen looked like high schoolers standing next to men. The real problem with the personnel is the fact that our oline is not only so bad, but also so small that they often just get blown off the ball. How many times this year did we see opposing offensive lines move our defensive line back 2 or 3 yards, while our offensive line got moved back 1 or 2 yards when going the opposite direction? We need better personnel AND better coaching.
